In the field of psychology, the Dunning-Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which people mistakenly assess their cognitive ability as greater than it is. It is related to the cognitive bias of illusory superiority and comes from the inability of people to recognize their lack of ability. Without the self-awareness of metacognition, people cannot objectively evaluate their competence or incompetence.

This video reminds me of a piece of advice my father gave me when I got my first job. He told me that because I was so inexperienced, that I didn't even know what I didn't know. He told me to keep my mouth shut, except to ask questions about the things that were confusing me. He also told me to periodically ask my boss what were the things that I needed to improve on, and then figure out how to improve my performance in those areas. He assured me that if I did that long enough that I would eventually get to the point where I at least knew what I didn't know. He told me to be happy when I got to that point, because by then all I needed to do was to research the things that I didn't yet know, so I could finally understand them. That was great advice and I still use it to this day. I miss you dad, you passed away when I was still a teenager but you taught me enough about being a man before you passed that I was able to live a life you'd be proud of. It's 2021, I'm 41 years old, and I still miss you every single day!

@@adilsonsf He's still the best man I ever knew. It hurts still to this day that I lost him, especially while I was still in High School, but he made sure his son would be able to succeed without him. He taught me how to be a man, it was up to me to do it. Every time I fell short, it wasn't because he didn't prepare me, it was because I didn't follow his examples. Even when he was stuck in that wheelchair, and in that hospital bed, he was still the strongest man that I've ever seen. Christ, I'm in tears writing this... I just hope my son ends up having a fraction of the respect for me that I have for my father. If he does, then I know I'll have done a good job raising him.

Yep. I've taken a hard look at life objectively and I'm glad I did but it's also a curse. I know I'm not a genius but I also know I am more intelligent than the average person, I know because I had a teacher in first grade who accused me of being mentally retarded. The state board of education got involved, I performed at a 3rd grade level in first grade. 🤷‍♂️ I've met right around three other people like me in person. INTJ life. See shit other people don't, plan things out unlike them but take less action than "stupid" people due to planning shit out. Stupid being in quotes because I ernestly believe there is more to intelligence than just IQ, for example emotional intelligence. Most people are good at something, just finding what that is takes longer for some people. Actions taken are more succesful but if someone takes more action, they'll usually end up ahead given that the world doesn't wait. So working on that.

We are social beings made to live in small group habitats (let's say a 500 people village). What's right or wrong will be agreed upon by the diverse group members (diverse in the sense of many divergent opinions). In social media, all of a sudden groups can gather whose members all have the same opinion -- as weird as it may be. Since nobody objects and they are a sizable amount, they think it's true/legitimate.

You should address the alternative problem. The problem is 'educated' people who believe they can do no wrong and cannot be questioned about their beliefs even though an 'uneducated' person has information and facts stating it is false.
@mek86
@mek86 2 года назад
@Logic No one said the uneducated person has a low IQ. Just because a person has made a chose not to be educated , does not make them an idiot. They do not analyze every facet, or make an attempt to acknowledge the facts presented to them due to the person not being 'educated' in the matter. This is an ego problem. ' I am better than you because I am educated' No, you are educated, but this does not mean you know everything and this down not mean no one else knows as much as you even if they are 'uneducated' When referring to educated and uneducated, it refers to the fact someone has gone through the education system. Being intelligent , does not mean you know everything. To admit you don't know and keep an open mind is the first step to learning. 5:23 OMG, don't even get me started with firearm handling. I volunteer as a range safety officer (entire shooting organization and range staff are volunteer to keep range fees and membership dirt cheap), and I could tell you some stories. We may be volunteers, but we do go through a certification process which includes safe handling of firearms, first aid training specializing in treating gunshot wounds and rattlesnake bites (we have rattlesnakes that wander onto the range from time to time), range policy, and a bunch of other stuff before you can become a RSO. I've seen RSOs do some stupid shit too, like forgetting to deploy the orange cones when going down range to repaint the steel targets (which start at 200 yards, and go out to 450 yards in 50 yard increments). They didn't even turn on the range cold lights which signify no handling of guns and/or ammo. They're lucky nobody started shooting at the closer targets, as those ricochets can bounce and tumble really far with a ton of energy still behind them. I'm certainly no expert, but I know enough to be careful, and enough to spot when people are doing something dangerous to the rest of the firing line. Had a guy argue with us once because he claimed he wasn't flagging people, but he was clearly flagging people. We had to escort him off the range and threaten to get the police involved if he didn't leave. We won't tolerate improper handling of firearms. It's one thing if someone makes a mistake, we point it out, and they immediately correct it, but it's another when they argue. That dog won't hunt.

I often see Dunning-Kruger effect being used as a slur or smear of those who refuse to go along with a narrative that experts are pushing. The Surgeon was an example of an educated individual's ego resulting in Dunning-Kruger effect. And that happened because the system has conditioned them to consider themselves experts in whatever they graduated from higher education with. Something else to consider whatever happened to respecting autodidacticism, Leonardo da Vinci is a prime example the fact that he was outside of the education system has sometimes been credited with allowing his genius to flourish.

I think its a mistake to get hung up on the issue of whether someone is average, above or below, what matters is whether what you think is true is actually true. What matters is whether one is genuinely careful in making up one's mind about what is true, and whether one continues to have an open mind to reassess when presented with contrary evidence. One thing I would say about the average person is at that he/she is pretty poor at this, at least that's the conclusion I have come over the decades of adult life. Most significantly this includes the average expert. Question, question everything!

His reasoning: The seat belt could prevent his escape from a burning and/or about-to-explode vehicle. (Also, subtle and oblique humor completely eluded him. Example: At one of our stand-up meetings, one in our group did a cute little victory dance (to celebrate a milestone). Everyone reacted as you'd expect; laughs and giggles. Then I said, "There's also a failure dance, you know... but, by pure coincidence, it just happens to look exactly like a bunch of people running down the street... crying and screaming." Laughs and giggles except from seat belt guy who (predictably) looked sort of worried and puzzled; to this day, I believe he thought I was serious about a 'failure dance'.)

@IanFromCalifornia True Believer alert! So if Exxon gives $1 mil grant to a climate scientist, then his conclusion that CC is a hoax is suspect, but if the govts of the world spent $10 Billion to "prove" CC, then that's "science" and above reproach. Got it. Oh, and to answer your question, yes, informed people on the right are only informed because they question every one and every thing. It's quite normal on this side of the aisle to review research and methods. Your side blindly believes everything you're told by the people on TV and declare anyone who questions the Narrative "anti-Science," because that's what thinking people do, they name-call and label "others"
@colatrl.damg3167
@colatrl.damg3167 2 года назад
@Logic actually CC is very easy to disprove with actual science. The only trouble is getting the normies to inform themselves from sources other than govt approved/govt controlled sources. Here's some science for you: Carbon Dioxide is not a "greanhouse" gas, in fact there are diminishing returns to the point that increases CO2 level has no effect on temperature. Climate "models" assume CO2 has a multiplying effect (not true) to create scary charts. That's why all predictions from 30 years ago are laughably false. CO2 rises AFTER temperature increases, this is because cold water can hold CO2 better than warm water, so when temp rises, CO2 is released from the oceans into the atmosphere. So cause and effect are 100% backwards. It is rising temps that cause the rising CO2. This trend is true over thousands of years and known to all climate scientists, ignored when they try to scare normies. Anyway, the atmosphere is only 0.4% CO2 - in 1900 it was 0.39%. Not something to worry about. USA warmest decade actual temp measured, 1930s. Coolest decade 70s. North ice cap is biggest ever and South Pole is recording the lowest temperatures ever recorded, probably due to solar minimum. This is science, and if you'd read it and compared it to the nonsense you're being spoon fed day after day, you'd understand it. Don't assume people who disagree know less than you. That's what morons do, Dunning-Kruger effect, if you will.
@colatrl.damg3167
@colatrl.damg3167 2 года назад
@Logic this is an appeal to authority - not an argument. you're assuming the people drilling The Sky Is Falling into your head are "highly educated people" - when in fact, the source of this info are global elites who want to control you. They've decided to scare you into thinking the world is ending, if only you give them more money and more power. Some of these white coats are nothing more than hired guns doing what they're told for $$$$. But you're so informed you realize they are just in it for the Science! …almost holy. Meanwhile, actual scientists are denied tenure, fired, and blacklisted to keep quiet.

One day, I'm talking to a lady telling me how the electricity in the house is dirty and will cause cancer and confusion and poor sleep patterns. I explained what "dirty electricity" meant and that it didn't work that way. Then she sent me a link to a book some guy wrote, it was only $2500 and told me that until I read this guy's book, I couldn't possibly understand. When I explained I already understood because it was the basis of my career starting when I was 17 in the Navy and I'm giving her my advice for free, she ask if I had written a book because if I didn't write a book, I'm not an expert! That was pretty funny! She later went on to pay this guy $5000 plus travel and expenses to put filters on her house electricity!

Essentially its the same basic thing, worded differently. Much in line with "The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt" Its a very similar premise that fits with the Dunning-Krueger. Languages tend to not translate directly, and what appears to have a direct meaning often has a colloquial meaning as well. Such as a Laotian insult that states "You have difficulty finding clothes" and the meaning is you are fat. I know how to say it, but no way in hell can I spell it. Finnish insults are hilariously crass, they would make Aussies recoil in amazement, and sjws from the states would get the vapors... which has no meaning in other languages. I really need to learn more German and Russian, they are fun languages.

@@OPnoobTheDH I don't completely agree with that lol. There are a lot of "beautiful" people that aren't smart. There are a lot of "ugly" people that are really intelligent. I often feel this ties into their chosen paths in life in most cases too, beautiful people don't have to work as hard because everyone wants to be their friend or help them out. People get famous or even become celebrities or models just for their looks. They don't have to study or go to school, they make a living off of being desirable. Uglier people get looked over and have to work harder and study harder if they want to make something of themselves. These are then often the people that end up becoming programmers, scientists, engineers. I studied in the field of science and technology, these people were very intelligent but most were not super attractive. Meanwhile, the Kardashians are considered very attractive and I don't feel like they're very intelligent. This isn't true in all cases and also beauty can be subjective, but I do notice a trend. I'm not denying the fact that people equate beauty with intelligence because I know they do, but I don't feel that bias holds any basis in reality. Ex: Man thinks woman is attractive. She is a flat earther, but he thinks her points about flat earth are really interesting and smart, he listens intently just because he finds her attractive. She isn't actually intelligent, he just thinks she is. I say this as the ugly nerd who observes this stuff all the time. And I'm really only ugly for things that are beyond my control, like genetic flaws. I do eat healthy, exercise, am thin, but still ugly by society's standards. 😂 People largely ignored me and I spent my time hitting the books because of it.
@OPnoobTheDH
@OPnoobTheDH 3 года назад
@@SM-gt9vg I don't mean to disrespect you in anyway but you cannot deduce or think with this type of logic. What you are saying is a textbook example of anecdotal fallacy with a bit of confirmation bias attached. We all have to be careful trusting in our own observations (or recollections of our observations) as truths. The data simply shows that intelligence and good-looks have a correlation coef. of about 0.38 which is roughly the same correlation as between intelligence and education level. So, in short, it would be as probable to correctly assume someone's intelligence based on their aesthetics as you would be to assume based on their education level. Certainly, that's quite the statistic. The other thing this means is that, of course, there are ugly people who are smart and pretty people who are stupid. Just like there's dumb people in college. The existence of these people does not undermine the correlation or the data itself which is to refute the point you made: "Meanwhile, the Kardashians are considered very attractive and I don't feel like they're very intelligent." My second point is that on a large scale, actually, attractiveness is quite objective rather than subjective. Of course attraction can vary quite profoundly from person to person, but if you give a list of 10 photos of people to 1000 people to rate, you would find that the rankings will be almost identical between the groups as long as cultural biases are standardized between the groups.
