As a Dutch citizen I can say that Geert Wilders would never be in charge of our next government because other parties refused to work with him beforehand because of his comments about muslims. Still fun to see that a big country like the US notices our little election though :)

"Act normal or leave" is not only taken out of context, but also translated too literally. A more accurate translation would be "behave yourself or leave".

"Act normal" can also mean "don't behave in a blatantly antisocial manner" in Dutch. Where you use it to call out someones toxic behavior. It doesn't necesarilly mean "assimilate" or something like that.

“Doe normaal” also means “be rational”, so the saying should be “Be rational or leave”

To provide some context on the ''act normal or leave'' article, I'll translate the paragraph above that statement: We feel a growing concern when people abuse their freedom to stir things up, while they came to this country seeking that freedom. People that refuse to integrate, relinquish our habits and reject our values. Who bother gay people, catcall women in short skirts or label regular Dutch citizens as racist. I really do understand that people think: if you fundamentally reject our country, I rather have you leave. I share that feeling. Act normal, or leave. Paragraph below that statement: In the Netherlands it's normal to shake hands and to treat each other as equals. It's normal that you don't harm first responders. That you respect teachers and don't nag people with vlogs. It's normal that you work for your income and try to make the best out of your life. A funfact is mostly tourists smoke weed in The Netherlands, not the citizens. Dutch people don't get the 'Big Woop' Americans have with softdrugs, because it is common here to smoke weed. Because it's common, there is a low crime rate visual inside the Netherlands. However, there are dealers (mostly foreingers) growing weed in the Netherlands and smuggeling it over the borders.

There is an explanation for Geert Wilders's terrible hair and it's actually quite funny. His mother happens to be of Indonesian descent and he has inherited from her his naturally curly, dark and totally non-white-Dutch hair. His attempt to disguise this fact by dying and ironing his hair at the cost of looking completely preposterous is, I think, quite revealing of his troubled mind.

But the "Act normal or leave" quote, which given the context of the article should be read as "Don't act like an idiot/asshole or leave", is pulled grossly out of context here as it is a direct address to those that preach homophobia, hate-speech on national values , refuse to shake a woman's hand, assault medical personnel or generally despise the country they chose to move to through other acts. I hope you understand the severity of incorrectly proclaiming to an audience of (probably) millions in the US that our mainstream politics are being pulled toward the right wing. Also, with 15 years an counting the Wilders problem has been around far longer than the Trump problem, with him alternately doing well or not well at all, so in no way does it make sense to say his sudden fall in the final results is due to your last elections. I am sorry to say this but this was just poor investigative work from your side.

As a Dutchman myself I would like to quickly point out that the translation of "doe normaal" to "act normal" is, although technically correct, very misleading. "Doe normaal" is a saying that is taught to many Dutch children from an early age. It's general meaning is one of "act in a way that you are pleasant to be around" or of a more biblical approach "act upon others like you would like them to act upon you". So the translation "act normal" is quite misleading in the fact that it implies that people should act in unison, even though it is way more about tolerance and being well to others.

The Prime Ministers remark about "act normal or leave" is taken without it's context. He says that if the people who live here, reject the country and it's people (the Dutch) so much, then you have to act normal or leave. We have been a very tolerant country, but to open our borders and then have people coming here, benefiting from a lot of freedom and then HATING us Dutch people doesn't sit right with many.

No Trevor, the Dutch are not primarily concerned about foreigners "stealing" "their" jobs. That's the primary cause for the xenophobia in your homeland, where natives are concerned about Zimbabweans and other non-South Africans "stealing" "their" jobs. On the other hand, in the Netherlands, those who support Geert Wilders are far more likely to be concerned about foreigners not having jobs at all (a.k.a. not "contributing") and relying on welfare. Now I do agree that this paragraph wasn't fit for a prime minister, although he was doing pretty well until the last sentence. However 'doe normaal' is a saying that you can hear on a daily basis, from friends, family or even from complete strangers.

Trevor had some "alternative facts" here :) The days that we were a left / liberal / progressive country are gone for years now. Actually: when Rutte came into power. His party is pretty conservative, it's a rich peoples party that became popular. Sort of Republicans: they don't really help the normal people, but do get the support. Weird. Geert used to be in parlement for Rutte's party. They really are not that different, except Geert is really outspoken (idiot) about islam. Basically Geert is in a vicious circle: he attacked islam, he got death treats, he attacks islam, etc etc.. He lives under 24 hours of protection for years now, moving from safe house to safe house: they guy has no idea what goes on in real life anymore. His fellow party members are all idiots (pissing in letter boxes / attacking people / wife beaters / etc). In the USA are more progressive laws about using pot than in the Netherlands (parties like Ruttes are very conservative about it). Don't give - again - the image that dutch people smoke pot all day: we actually don't, it's tourists that do mostly. And no... it's not Trump that made us doubt Wilders. One: Wilders is in politics with his own party (PVV, the anti islam party) for years, and years before that he was in politics for Rutte's party. We are dealing with his shit for years, it has nothing to do with Trump.
