I know people say this a lot, but it’s sad when a comedian is asking tougher questions than our news media
@Gearmeshkutt
@Gearmeshkutt 5 лет назад
Comedians make their money by shedding light on the ridiculousness of the status quo. The job of today's media is to distract you enough so that you don't question the status quo. They are millionaires paid by billionaires to keep you in your houses, work as they tell you to work, and buy what they tell you to buy. They divide you up and push you to rage at each other over the most trivial things. What did he tweet today? What shade of skin am I supposed to hate? Which liar am I supposed to defend? God forbid we collectively start asking meaningful questions. What would they do if we ever unified and called the people making decisions to account for what they have done?
@snapgab
@snapgab 5 лет назад
Comedy actually has a lot of overlap with what journalism is supposed to be about, journalism is supposed to be about speaking truth to power, about holding the powerful accountable by shedding light on their activities. Comedy is very similar to that because comedy is often about making fun of the status quo, and the powerful tend to be the embodiment of the status quo, so the funniest jokes are often about the most powerful people.
@Gearmeshkutt
@Gearmeshkutt 5 лет назад
@@snapgab I agree with the statement of what journalism is "supposed to be". Most of the media has decided to cash in on division, sensationalism, and spewing the propaganda of the wealthy. The gap between what they should do and what they actually do seems to increase every day. They will spend days wringing their hands over the tweet of a fool. I don't see them investigating and making the lives of big pharma executives difficult by shedding light on them. Just one of the endless examples.

People need to understand where the foundation of a nation rest. Further that the erected power structure exists for the people, due to the people. It is in a Nation's best of interest to see to the well being of it's people, to ensure security and an environment to flourish in to further bolster and enhance legacy. The US is explicitly divisive from meddling administrations and spheres of influence. The US coddles the grossly affluent. It turns a blind eye to the rot. The sanctity of office is defiled. Trust has been eroded. Minds culled and scattered to disuade a unified voice and vision, for it threatens exposure of the disingenuous. What possible, meaningful change can truly be hoped for when it is the system itself, the global network of multinational interest and exploitation, is the administer of said change?

If you listen to the Rudi en Freddie show you'll notice he's not that well spoken, but I get your sentiment. I often find his arguments awkwardly phrased and his logic making leaps and lacking in parts (in his book De Meeste Mensen Deugen he tries to repaint all of history in the light of 'people are actually decent' and even feels the need to discuss the Holocaust in this light, which obviously goes down horribly) but I do usually end up agreeing with the points he is trying to make. He certainly makes you think though which is really the best you can ask for from a popular historian/journalist. A Avesta - He's not advocating that you, me and the rest of us working people, not even the still comfortable parts of the middle class, pay more taxes, but that the very, very rich pay Their Fair Share. Because as a historian, he knows that the riches of the rich are far greater proportionately than what they've been except for just before the 1929 crash. And in fact, through corporate welfare, military industrial complex spending and tax structures in their favor, those rich are actually collecting our taxes, much less contributing much if anything to the common good. While we get no proper return from what is pumped out of us.

Does that show how wealth should be re-distributed? Garbage collectors in mansions and bankers in tiny apartments? :)
@sirhoovythesandvichdispens6309
It does have a bias in it though. Rutger said that 85% of the money was inaccessible, but it is a common idea in banking that it will never occur that every customer of a bank takes off their money at once. So if 15% was still accessible, it would indeed not matter much if the bankers striked. If they went on a full strike, like 'noone gets their money', just like the garbagemen, who were like 'noone gets their garbage collected', then I would be interested in the consequences.
@mandlerparr1
@mandlerparr1 5 лет назад
@@sirhoovythesandvichdispens6309 The wealthy would feel the effect first, these days. Banker's don't really have an effect on most people's access to money. All my things are already set up automatically. Pay goes in automatically, bills paid the same way. A banker is only involved when they are trying to get something from me. If I need to go into a bank, a teller can do everything I need. The poor already have access to resources outside of banks. We have stores that cash our checks. Some jobs used to cash checks for their employees, and if push came to shove, they would go back to that. The poor who do use banks do so because it is a convenience and saves money if done right. But it is not a need. And the banks have only themselves to blame, since they decided that the money of the poor was no good to them. So, the only ones that would care would be the wealthy who need banks for massive loans, and thus need bankers. This is simplified, of course. The rich need the banks for a lot more than just massive loans.

Which irks me extremely, since yesterday the Daily Show had presidential candidate Andrew Yang as a guest, who has an entire policy page on his campaign website build around many of Rutger's ideologies. But TDS chose to make it a Ronnie Chieng bit where he just jokes about Andrew's race without letting him explain his ideas, his policies and plans. Basically, what I'm trying to say is that I had hoped that Andrew Yang had gotten an interview format similar to Rutger's. I think Ronnie is hilarious, but it needed to be more informational. Productivity continues to go up, but we still work similar hours for similar pay, which means everyone is taking on a higher mental load every day than in the past and isn't being recognized for it. And ... Another point in history. Jimmy Carter tried to start the green new deal by Putting Solar Panels on the White House. Dropping the Thermostat to 64f in the winter and Calling for more Renewable Energy. When Reagan won he was so Pissed about Renewable Energy he pulled the plug on most , if not all projects and Ripped the Solar Panels off the roof.

TheSmreeder Reagan...Trump - bad things happen when men whose only claim to fame is bad movies and bad TV shows are elected to public office. Never could stand either one of them on the tube when they were supposed to be entertaining, could stand them even less when they entered the White House. Why do we elect stupid people to office? At least Richard Nixon had a good brain - he tried to get a basic income started to end poverty - but it tanked in the Senate twice because the GOP wanted to be stingy and the Democrats wanted to make basic income a realistic amount. Too bad.

Although parties indeed endlessly discuss the proportion of money going towards healthcare or education - abandoning your right to affordable healthcare or education is out of question. In America they're not even agreeing on that part.

@@andorifjohn Yang doesn't want to lower taxes in fact he wants a VAT (to pay for the UBI) that exempts consumer staples and falls on luxury goods . (Therefore effecting high income earners more) America is the only developed economy without a VAT . You can't make America like Sweden without following tax structures similar to them . 13 million people that live in poverty are completely disconnected from the current social safety net . Average wait time for disability is 2 years. 67% of claims are denied. Average food stamp payout is $126/person per month. Average TANF is $447 per month. The average person receiving benefits gets less than $750/mo. Yangs UBI not only puts an extra $250 in their pocket, it also doesn't get taken away as their situation improves. They also don't have to go through bureaucratic hell to get their basic needs . I recommend looking more into his policies and hearing from himself instead of what others tell you about him .

ThatDutchguy i know that no party rules alone a few months ago gave a draw on 12.7% for the three biggest parties I was referring to the Portuguese Liberals as a Portuguese VVD because they are both in ALDE I don’t know the ideals of Dutch merchants but I know that you have the principle of freedom well established not only in the Netherlands but in northern Europe in general. Democracy is in your DNA. In Portugal authoritarianism is in our DNA so everyone wants the government to help them and in an extreme case like this one now the EU(aka Dutch Germans and Scandinavians) to give money to our gigantic welfare state. In Portugal you are better seen if you don’t work and live well than if you work a lot and earn a lot. And that can be changed with economic liberalism and a quick research on the freest economies you will see that the ones on top, the most capitalist, are the richest. So if the Dutch and the Irish are rich by being a fiscal heaven why can’t we Portugal do that?

The convergence of technology and capitalism is not sustainable. There will be millions less jobs for people as population increases and the wealth gap gets wider and wider. "Capitalism" "socialism" "communism" are all theories of the past. We're can't constrain ourselves to black and white definitions of how our economy and culture and the value of a human being are viewed. Moving forward we cannot be pigeon holed by these ideas, and we must combine everything good from them in order to evolve our economy and culture to keep up with the evolution of technology. So many people are stuck in the thinking of the 20th century.
@winfield8562
@winfield8562 4 года назад
@Snappingturtle 267 I appreciate your thoughts and reply, but it appears you didn't read into the main point of my post. Sure, wealth is earned, but in this day and age things are different than how it used to be. No longer can people and small businesses prosper like they used to. Technology has already replaced millions of jobs and it's only going to accelerate. The billion dollar companies that have the rear of the government and the means to invest in automation and artificial intelligence will outpace everyone and consolidate the wealth even more. This country used to tax the people of means and now they get away with paying next to nothing while we (the consumers) full their pockets. If you think anyone can "pull themselves up by the bootstraps" and have a level playing ground with companies like Amazon, then you are living in the 90s or early 2000s. Young don't seem to understand how quickly things are changing. It is not going to fpp back to how things were. These changes were already happening, and the pandemic only accelerated it. Get ready for a world with high unemployment because there will not be enough jobs for everyone. I'll be fine, but tens of millions in our country won't be.
