The Dutch-Paris Escape Line
With Megan Koreman
Holocaust content on WW2TV
• The Holocaust
Of all the resistance organizations that operated during the war, about which much has been written, one stands out for its transnational character, the diversity of the tasks its members took on, and the fact that, unlike many of the known evasion lines, it was not directed by Allied officers, but rather by group of ordinary citizens. Between 1942 and 1945, they formed a network to smuggle Dutch Jews and others targeted by the Nazis south into France, via Paris, and then to Switzerland. This network became known as the Dutch-Paris Escape Line, eventually growing to include 300 people and expanding its reach into Spain. Led by Jean Weidner, a Dutchman living in France, many lacked any experience in clandestine operations or military tactics, and yet they became one of the most effective resistance groups of the Second World War. Dutch-Paris largely improvised its operations―scrounging for food on the black market, forging documents, and raising cash. Hunted relentlessly by the Nazis, some were even captured and tortured. In addition to Jews, those it helped escape the clutches of the Nazis included resistance fighters, political foes, Allied airmen, and young men looking to get to London to enlist. As the need grew more desperate, so did the bravery of those who rose to meet it.
When Megan Koreman, PhD, was a little girl, her aunt and uncle told her stories about what they did in the Dutch Resistance in Maastricht. She’s been fascinated with the Second World War ever since. She thought about the war while getting her BA at Notre Dame and focused her studies on it in graduate school at UC Berkeley. At that time historians did not think there were any documents about the Resistance. Archival laws have changed since then, and Megan has been the first historian to consult many of the recently opened and declassified archives about the Resistance in Europe and the US. She writes, lectures, and teaches on the everyday difficulties and moral dilemmas of civilians caught under Nazi Occupation.

Megan really brings these brave people to life, with her wonderful descriptive ability to tell a story and hold the audience's attention. This, along with the photographs she provided, saying their names, contemplating what they did to save others, really took my breathe away. Megan's research in tracking people down was phenomenal. There is one thing with Woody's format here on RU-vid, I can get as close to the pictures as I want, examine maps and details up close on my computer, not something that happens at a lecture. Then you can watch it again. Thank you Megan and Woody.

Great presentation, a real eye opener. These people displayed incredible courage and dedication, sadly all too many paid the ultimate price.

What a fantastic presentation! It is great to see the faces of the Dutch-Paris line. Also the discussion at the beginning of the definition of resistance shows the needed nuances while looking at the civilians during the War.

Paul, thank you for this tremendous guest and subject. I can only feel a humble sense of reverence for these people. The situation these good people found themselves in is repugnant and I could only begin to hope for a modicum of their courage. Thank you.

A very interesting talk today on the bravery and just sheer guts it took to run a resistance escape line in #WW2 & the brutality of the Nazis and French collaborators to eliminate them. Thank god for good people with humanity to win over evil. Thank you Paul and Megan for bringing thier stories to light.

I just finished watching the video and was profoundly moved by the stories of some really quite ordinary people doing such noble and dangerous things to help others that they did not know who also were in precarious positions escape, and in many cases to fight again. It was sad but indeed inspiring that many lost their lives in the process. You know...."Greater love hath no one but that he (or she) would lay down his (or her) life for another." Megan is a superb speaker whose research led us through a diamond presentation. It was good to see some of the professionals show up in the live chat too. Carry on WW2TV with your work!!

I really loved Megan's presentation. It was very interesting to learn about these escape lines. I did not realize until this presentation how many people crossed into Switzerland from the escape lines.

Every so often an exceptional historian appears on WW2TV and tells the story of very courageous people. Megan had me spellbound with her in-depth knowledge of the individuals and was able to show the big picture as well as individual deeds of quiet courage. Thank you for a wonderful presentation. Definitely, for me, one of the outstanding episodes. Hope to see Megan again. She is a wonderful storyteller

Woody/Megan. Fantastic interesting but also somber presentation! Cant imagine what these ‘Civilians’ went through. Thanks for enlightening us all. Bob

Imagine the need to pass through Brussels and Paris was because these were the main railway routes, despite an instinct to avoid centres of population.

Hello Marybeth: It is great that you discovered WW2TV! It is a very, very special channel and "place". It and its creator, producer and host, Paul Woodadge are unique in kind and quality; there simply is no match. Many of us, women and men, from all over the world who subscribe to his channel, share these sentiments. As a fan, subscriber, and supporter (I support him through Patreon), I look forward to seeing you in the live chats (which I attend when I can) and in the comments. Pam

@@Pam_N Hi, Pam - thanks for the welcome. I won't likely be able to participate in real time on the live streams as they often run while I am working, but I was a fan of Paul's work before I found WWII TV, as I had seen him on The History Underground providing expert commentary for the WWII (ETA) episodes on that channel.

"Flee The Captor" about Dutch-Paris & John Weidner (founder of Dutch-Paris). Great book for kids & adults alike. My mom used to read this book to us when we were young. We were privileged to hear him talk about his experiences in person in the late 70s.

12:23. landing gear arrangement suggests B-24. Can also see what appears to be starboard rudder of B-24.

I thought the same thing as well. Perhaps Megan just didn't know the difference between the models. I am thinking that it really doesn't matter much. The bomber crew who was helped to escape certainly didn't complain I'm sure. Good eye though Chris!

It is a B-24. My uncle, Thomas Terrill, who was the copilot of the Sarah Jane, said there were no B-17s on hand the day that photograph was taken so they werer posed in front of a B-24.

My Rauter is out, so do this by phone. I'm from Bergen op Zoom where a large part of the Resistance membersv involved with those escape lines where arrested. One of the most difficult things was we called 'Ons kent ons' translated everybody knows each others symphaties. They knew already where to look. Another huge impact was 'King Kong' and the arrest involved with the so called 'Englandspiel'.

As soon as my rauter problem is solvef, I will put more in the comments, as part of the line organized also a route to Sweden f.i. But because of 'The Englandspiel' a large part of the Resistance was arrested or had to go underground and hide.

Just before WW2 the Dutch Gov. implemented the Person Registration System that was earlier rejected, in a panic situation to locate German spies in the Netherlands. Not one was apprehended, even though one German SS officer operated in the facinity of Bergen op Zoom in the open and was able to plot the entire defense lines from Moerdijk to Woensdrecht. That system was captured and copied by the Germans and became the famous 'Ausweis'. It was far better then the German Kennkarte system. And that's why it was so easy to sift out millions of people and sent them to the concentration camps.
