Just wondering if you know that the sea level has been rising VERY CONSISTENTLY for the time period we've measured it accurately. It is not all of a sudden a HUGE problem. If we were to raise the existing dikes by a meter or 2, we'd probably be safe for the next 100 years.
There is a thought experiment by Sjoerd Groeskamp and Joakim Kjellsson called NEED. North European Enclosure Dam. It is more of a warning than an actual solution, but quite intriguing nonetheless. Would have been nice to have it mentioned as a bonus sometime to demonstrate the incredible changes coming our way.
Crypto just crashed, and within a week Masterworks pops up. I can't help but feel it's just an attempt to fuse NFTs with the old art market, and just another desperate attempt to take advantage of the global economic downturn. When people are looking for some magical new fangled business opportunity, scams and dodgy businesses rise to meet the demand. I bet this will eventually end with a lot of lost savings, some suicides and (hopefully) some exec in prison.
The "massive sea dike" is not actually intended to keep the water out. It is intended to be permeable to water; all it does is break the strength of the waves so the shore does not get pounded as badly. Since the water behind the dike will not be as turbulent, any sediment that passes through the dike will settle there, slowly raising the ground level behind the sea dike over the course of a century or so. Once it has come up high enough, it will be a simple matter to turn it into more useful land. After that we just repeat, until eventually the UK and Ireland become part of the Netherlands as well. For an even more megalomaniac plan, look up the Northern European Enclosure Dam.
@@rolandboerhof9391 I mean, if there's one thing we're good at, it's invading the UK with unique, never-seen-before strategems 😆 Last time (1689) we sent our king, and they allowed him in because they thought he came to surrender. Instead he sat on the throne and said "now make me tea". Somehow it worked...

Imagine if the Netherlands actually manages to not flood from it's costline, but then Flanders and lower Saxony flood and the water flanks the Netherlands from behind.
"As a last resort, the Dutch have one more scenario if sea level rise speeds up dramatically" Me: Buy nukes from France. "Migrations inland" Me: Ah, of course, yes.
We should have purchased nuclear energy from France decades ago. Now your childrens children will migrate inland yes. While hundreds of millions of humans will be dying.
Although I enjoy videos about the Netherlands (as a Dutchie), I hope to see more coverage on topics on the continental scope. But either way great content.
Yes, this was a series that I made all at the same time (a project that got a little bit out of hand). There is one more in the series but I will publish it later. The future videos will be much more European in scope! Cheers. Hugo
the people in natherland have a saying "God made the Earth, but the Dutch made Holland." this is just funny to me because it is true like they did take back like half of there country form the sea i love netherland it is a great country
5:59 More importantly, Rotterdam is Europe's largest port and adds huge amounts of value to the Dutch economy. If that's blocked from the sea, the Netherlands' economy will take a battering.
I would assume any plan to build a sea wall would include building a replacement port for rotterdamn on the exterior of where the port now is. Or more likely upgrading the facility to be able to launch and acceot vessels through the sea wall. Perhaps using the japanese method of water gate mixed with classic british and dutch canal building
You cannot build a seawall without an exit to the sea, for where then do the rivers go with their water? So there will always be a way to Rotterdam for the ships. Only the Rotterdam port gets bigger towards the sea.
@@jasonhaven7170 im assuming any giant seawall in the netherlands is going to have to engineer around gods. It wouldnt be entirely impossible to design a sort of gangway that could transport containers offloaded down a pier inti the port proper. But how youd get the appropriate level of flow i have no idea
I'd be intesresting to give a unique aproach on wich EU countries have the biggest growth potencial. My bets would be Romenia, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Finland, and Bulgaria Or maybe a video or series on each countries contribution to the EU, from resource level do economic or cultural level etc. Each EU country biggest resource Potencial policies for the EU as well as more speculation about the uncertain future of the block
I believe that on the battle against climate change everything is TOO focused on emission reduction. It's important yes but from what I see happening it's already way too late. In recent years so many projections on temperature rise, precipiation, ice melting etc. have turned out to be wrong. Sometimes completely unexpected effects show and most of the times the projections were overtaken by reality in pace. We need to cut down emissions yes but it won't do anything to STOP climate change. Especially considering that only rich countries focus much on that topic. The most populous places often lie in the third world, where pollution of any kind is a big issue. Only now the Western countries are really panicing and trying to do things in a couple of years that would have been necessary decades ago. Besides emission reduction we now need to focus on reduction of poverty and political instability globally. And the most important part is to COPE with and prepare for the effects of climate change, which are already very apparent in Europe.
If you wanna be successful, you most take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to make you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life.
The crypto market is highly profitable with an expert broker just like Mrs Sophia . I got recommended to her and since then my financial life has been a success.. 1
The historical facts about the Dutch struggle/love affair with the sea is compelling and informative but it's entirely undermined and ruined by converting this presentation into (even) more climate crisis propaganda. I couldn't even count the number of bombastic, imperative references to totally unproven claims which have been derived from models, not actual data...models that the people and groups who currently control things on this planet, have been utterly manipulating and pounding into us for decades now, to serve their desires, not the needs of humanity. Just so you know, at the ACTUAL rate the sea level is rising, it will take approximately 671 years for the oceans to rise one meter. This is not based on some model of a scientist who is required to come up with certain results or he won't get paid, it's real data.
7:28 tip voor de volgende keer: Bij IJssel moet je zowel de 'i' als de 'j' in hoofdletters schrijven. Zo is het bijvoorbeeld ook IJsland ipv Ijsland. Voor de rest goede video hoor!
@the FIRST KING👑 dogo I got respect for your infrastructure, just not the lack of policing of drugs. Not just Netherlands but all of Europe. I remember when interpol said they'd be best security force in world. They ain't done sod all on people and drug traffickers. Your super trawlers and your entitled fishermen need to learn about conservation too.
I would advice to prepare a little better next video and to keep all that alarmistic out. Apart from your GdP error, you should have mentioned that we have adapted our current water defence as is on a 3 meter plus variation, since the sea is not static. This means that weer are more than ready for a year by year sea level rise now and we are able to adapt on time when necessary.
The guy is a WEF bot. Look at his sponsors. Look at his content - it's a rhetoric to justify the Dutch farmlands grab by the government. I'm waiting for serious (and honest) engineers to call bullshit on this plan. But even a mere common sense suffise to know that "damming and pumping up the entire volume of the Rhine" is a delirium. Not to mention the collapse of the local ecosystem it would lead to if it was doable.
I say put Amsterdam on hollow blocks so that when the water rises we can simply tow them out to sea and get rid of that open sewer and everyone within it.
I dislike this notion that many words for a concept means its importance in its respective culture (the most used example is the inuit language and words for snow). Like in German you also have "Hochwasser", "Überschwemmung", "Sturmflut" or "Wassersnot", but the relationship towards the sea is entirely different.
I'm a fan of everything Dutch. Wish I had paid closer attention to the.issues in this video when I visited many years ago. Can someone kindly point me to a good online summary of how the dykes, polders & flood control system has evolved the past 1000 yrs. I love maps and diagrams, but found this video too fast moving until I study more. If Holland is ever completely flooded over, I hope the entire, clever, good-looking, fit population resettles in my country. Pls. bring your artists, farmers, architect's, engineers, bicycles, boats and low carbon footprint.
You're videos are really really good. Please stop being so Dutch and only talking about Dutch things. I don't know how to describe it but it colors every video. It is a good thing but it can be too much too.
Can you talk about thirsty cement and how it can save millions to billions of tons of sand every year if cities used it even if it was only parking lots.
Into Europe, please try to alter the map of the randstad to show all the medium city's like Zoetermeer Gouda delft leiden also and also maybe the bigger villages to really show the density of the randstad
And how would turning Amsterdam into an Island save the entire Netherlands? Not many people now but there is a lot more in the Netherlands than Amsterdam
@@schildinc Thanks! My point was actually that the background of the Money & Macro channel is exactly the same as this channel. Maybe they live in the same house. Anyway, that M&M channel is really good at explaining economic events.
Come to Canada ... lots of empty land, lots of people with Dutch heritage and the warming world is making for more and more farmland. I'm fourth generation Dutch Canadian ... the biggest water problem I've faced in my lifetime is a bit of snow shoveling in my driveway.
Nice people in Canada, but too far north to my liking. If I had to move I would rather move to Spain, where there is also plenty of room if you go inland. It can be hot there, but I prefer hot over cold and snow.
They must stay on Netherland, else islamites/africans take over. Leftish keep letting in them still, and already there are far too many. White Dutch are needed in Netherlands, now more then ever.
I wonder what would have happened if, after the 1970's when the call to compost a nations waste as much as possible, if it had been done, all that compost would have raised land height. It could possibly have helped places that are below sea level now.
The Dutch govt is crazy, losing their shit over farmers fertilizer, yet how much co2 and energy would be wasted with any of these mega projects, if you believe the whole climate change psyop.....
Three reasons: 1) The Netherlands only works because they've drained the swamp and pumped all that water into the rivers, which then raises the river level to match the sea while also providing solid ground to build/farm on. You couldn't really do the same in the Everglades without destroying them. 2) The Netherlands has 508 people/km2 compared to Florida's 136/km2. This means that the cost of any sea defense is going to cost an individual Floridian almost 5 times as much as it costs an individual Dutch person. The economics just don't make sense for a sparsely populated state like Florida. I think the big cities like Miami and Orlando *will* start to invest in sea defenses in the coming years. 3) Yankee Boomers migrated to the state and keep voting for climate change deniers. They have fixed income and none of their family lives in Florida, so why would they vote to raise taxes and protect the state 50-100 years from now? They'll be long dead and their descendants will still be safe in Ohio or New York. People fail to plan for completely foreseeable disasters all the time-- I mean every hurricane season people wind up dying because they don't take evacuations seriously
@@IanBurnette wow you are full of crap, we can close down our sea entries, when there is a northwestern storm. Northwestern storms are the only reason we build our sea walls, look at the geography. The gap at Calais is so small these storms cause a surge. That’s why we had floods. If you think democrats moving to Florida vote republican, think again. And by your logic Florida is doomed then because sea levels rising. Why are you worried, it’s gonna sink beneath the waves right
I can sometimes be persuaded to watch an ad, but Masterworks sounds shadier than Established Titles. At the very least, you're exposing your viewers, to potential financial loss.
I remember watchibg a report on that. The local American politicians said that it was very expensive and the Dutch expert's response was simply the number of deaths and the cost of damages from the last hurricane.
Sea level rises in coastal area , 50 or 80 years from now this will cause flood or worse makes the 1/3 part of NL sink . 😳 The reason why Dutch government really concern about global warming and sea level.
It‘s all hopeless in the long run. The ever faster melting Greenland will rise sealevel by 7 meters. And Antarctica is good for another 70 meters. Even East-Antarctica, long presumed to be exempt from the human induced climate crisis, is starting to thaw. So if you extend the time from the Holland Golden Ages till today into the future, it will all be gone. Not fighting climate change in the first place was a horrific mistake that cannot be reversed with any Dutch money you can imagine.
Multiple factors are never entered into the risks, like how the ocean doesnt rise as much as it does at the equator and how even now with the Tonga eruption there is no talk of natural disasters that have been cooling us naturally for as long as we have existed. If the Tonga eruption is the biggest eruption since 'The Year Without A Summer' when Krakatoa erupted i think people had better factor this into their calculations. Also the Hans Tausen Ice Cap, in Peary Land, northern Greenland, was drilled in 1977, with a new deep drill to 325 m. The ice core contained distinct melt layers all the way to the bedrock. That indicates that Hans Tausen Iskappe contains no ice from the last glaciation and so the world's northernmost ice cap melted away during the post-glacial climatic optimum 9000 years ago and was rebuilt when the climate cooled some 4000 years ago.
Randstad is a human resource consulting company, we never use that in Amsterdam ! Amsterdam is the only city in Holland, the Dutch Indies company made this small nation to what it is now. In any doom scenario, we only keep Amsterdam ! please no more videos.
I think they plan on buying a mountain of stone from the Swiss to make a new coastline. As there is no stone in the Netherlands, if you skip over the boulders the gletchers left here.
Why not just move what they can inland, build buildings 2 metres or higher, and prepare by having interlinking bridges to already established large cities? Surely that's cheaper than just making more and more large dykes, while having to pump floodwater.
Im sorry why is your evidence of masterworks beings "genius investment" only 8 sales ? Also if they sold for more than 20% that means that it was sold because it went so high, and those that arent getting valued up are being stored... Also almost all "expensive art" is being sold only once and then never again..
Hmmm, the three words for flooding don't appear to be have crossed the southern border. As in Belgium we only use "hoogwater" to talk about "high tide", an overstroming can also be , and in fact usually is, around a river
Almost perfect video. I enjoyed it very much. When you mention Climate Change, you lose me. Still gave it a thumbs up, you need to think for yourself, not what the zeitgeist tells you.
I think that the vast majority of the Dutch will not mind at all if Amsterdam, instead of turning it into an island, will be the first to be swallowed up by the sea, including the canal belt residents of course.
I live in Denmark, same problem, just not as bad, we are really not prepared, newest prognose say, 1 meter of sea level rise at the end of the twenty's, 10 meter sea level rise at the end of the thirties, and the rest at the end of the forties, we are going to be very busy in Europe, and every coastal city on the planet.
Wouldn't pushing the sea further back from the netherlands put other countries at greater risk by pushing the sea out further towards other coastlines?? it's not very thoughtful
Weird plan to preserve the Randstad. Without rails and roads it doesn't stay the economic engine of the country. Either we combine efforts with other countries and dam the whole north sea or just ditch the whole country.
If the dutch dont win this fight against sea rise the. I dont see any country doing better since they the best at it Other then that theres some places that have luck on their side like sotuh america. Where the 🏔️ act like a natural barrier between land and sea People there are very save from rising sea level Some capitals might have to be relocated but overall they would do okayq
