I have to say, I disagree politically in almost every way with her but I admire her for her calm, her understatement, her endurance, for her intelligence. Find another politician who doesn't have a scandal in so many years, who still lives in the same flat as before her/his career started, who still washes her/his clothes her/himself.

The level of journalism and professionalism is quite appreciable.

A truly sensible and outstanding leader not just for Germany but also the rest of Europe and the world, a rarity these days. She will be missed sorely!

Many praises for the Chancellor, so I want to thank and express appreciation to the interviewer - thoughtful questions asked politely and respectfully - a stark contrast from most American interviewers.

You Germans are lucky to have one leader under democracy for this long of a period. Continuity is a weakness in many other democracies. After that recognition, you can overlay your opinions on her, but respect her for what she represented.

The way she speaks, her gestures, way of pragmatism and thoughtfulness are just unimaginable for any politician to have these days. She embodied german culture and european values, while staying true to herself. She remained humble, even though she possessed this immense power not many people really have or ever had. No scandals in her politics, not a single case of corruption, not a single abuse of her position... This way we (Europeans) all had unconditional trust, faith and respect for her and so did the rest of the world. She embodied German transparency (trust into the brand "MADE IN GERMANY" ). We knew that under her rule everything was going to be okay, that she would be proud of us in good times and be there for us in bad times. What she did in 16 years of her leadership is exceptional. She is German "Mutti", and our European "Mother". If she ran for another term, everything would have been so much better (yes, she messed it up with Russia, but she would find a way out, because she is so exceptional in communication to the world, determined in finding a compromise, and known for strong and stable decisions, while retaining what was in the best interest of her people and us in the EU). Not many politicians are able to confront and acknowledge their mistakes and overturn them to their advantage or find new better solutions to the problem. She did just that, and she would have done it again. With utmost respect to her, "our mother". I'm saying this with sadness, because she has stepped down and with happiness, because of her legacy as one of the most pure and exceptional politicians of modern time.

She commanded a lot of respect and she was overall a decent politician. Too bad the immigration choices created so much instability in Europe.

Although I am Indian, she is one of my favourite politician.

Meiner Meinung nach die beste Person, die je das Kanzleramt inne hatte. Wer anders denkt soll mal die Position Deutschlands in der Weltpolitik analysieren. Natürlich hat sie eine Fehler gemacht, aber im Gegensatz zu vielen, war sie nie stupide an ein Parteibuch oder eine Ideologie gebunden und hat aus den Fehlern gelernt. Hut ab. Schade, dass sie schon geht, ich sehe zur Zeit keinen adäquaten Nachfolger.

Really good interview, but why are some sentences not translated 1 to 1? I'm a german citizen and it seems to me that you sometimes just added words like "maybe" out of nowhere or changed the sentence a bit too much for my taste.

Just like the Treaty of Versailles was viewed at the time to be too extreme, eventually leading to WW2. I feel Merkels and indeed Europe's immigrations policies have been too extreme, too generous. Time will tell what this will lead to.
