THIS CAR HAS A WLTP TESTED BATTERY RANGE OF 144 MILES
In this video I drive my first full electric vehicle which will undoubtedly be the first of many as a result of the massive investment in e-mobility by the VW Group.

I just like the Golf, an everyman type of car, always well built, ok can be classed as a bit boring, but it's just a really good drivers car, slick gearbox, great choice of engine, a real steady Eddie, does everything ever so well, it is so east to have a go at them, but check out how many 15 year old Golfs still going strong, always a fan, Electric! yet to be convinced, but they are getting better

I don't own an electric car, my next one will likely be the gti egolf hybrid thing. I do find it strange how people comment that you have to charge it fullly before it can be used, surely it's the same as a normal car whereby if you are a bit skint and can only chuck a fiver in you just put a fiver in the tank - with an e-car surely you just unplug it when you need to go out and about and then re-plug it at the destination or when you return....more convenient as you aren't going out of your way to top it up or fill it up (so to speak)
@volkswizard

That's a good point James. Question is how much do you put in to allow for unforeseen eventualities? Remember the days when it snows and people get stuck on motorways? Difference between half and full range can be life or death (by hypothermia). Or say you plan to charge at your destination so you don't need much but get there and it's in use or inop or iced, what do you do? As charging becomes quicker this will be less of an issue but for early adopters this has to be something to consider. Thanks very much for commenting, it's all good debate.

Interesting how you note that the lack of engine sound can lead you to go far faster than intended! I suspect this will lead to more EVs in future going down the “fake sound” route. One inside for the audible feedback the driver needs, and another outside to comply with pedestrian legislation. As long as it isn’t an MP3 recording of a V8, EVs should absolutely make cool sounds!

I just traded in my 2016 e-golf last July after 3 years of ownership. It only had 83 miles range (53 miles with 25% reserve). That was how it was driven. The battery degraded only 10% after 34K miles. We are now back to all ICE car fleets, as sub 200 mile range is not acceptable unless you have a cross country back up vehicle. The e-golf is a no-compromise car, considering it has been around since 2015. Range is it’s only negative.

Happy to go with a hybrid for my next car while the EV charging infrastructure develops. If we are looking at these vehicles to be economical then should performance be limited to extend range? Isn’t that primarily the function of them over combustion? Thanks for the video. Really informative.

If your using to listen to radio , Apple car play , air con then the range becomes shorter - is that right ? I don’t want to be restricted of what I can use while driving just to get a longer range
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 года назад
Carplay will be minimal but any electrical consumers especially a/c will kill range. Heated seats, lights (that’s why it has efficient LEDs), wiper etc all have a part.

Im not happy with no spare wheel. The puncture may not be fixable with gunk. Breakdown trucks are having to consider carrying all sorts of spece savers, or take longer to respond, as they search for the right sized wheel. I dont think its an improvement. Nor are electric handbrakes, imo. Rant over.

The car has the discover Nav Pro which enables you to have the Sat Nav displayed on both screens. This is also the same if you spec the Discover Pro in the GTI or R models too.

Can anyone tell me why almost every egolf I have looked at with under 10k miles have cuts to the sidewalls on their tyres. Every single one has it! Even with both types of alloy. Why is this the case?!

I do like this car, a fully electric car would suit me right now, I only work a few miles away, the car park I use has a few charge points, but if I were to change jobs fully electric could suddenly become a problem as I don't have a driveway. It's a shame there are still a lot of downsides to electric cars.
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 года назад
If you can charge at work then not charging at home is OK. Problem is, what if everyone wants to charge at work? Say there aren't enough charge points for people to sufficiently charge to get back home, even with vacating the space once full? It's a very complicated situation, just hoping we see swift progress in addressing all the many issues so consumer confidence is strong enough to support the market.
@JimboJammy
@JimboJammy 4 года назад
@@volkswizard well said. Where I work, the spaces are for cars charging only, in reality, I see the same cars parked there all day everyday fully charged as if it were reserved parking. That's another problem that will need to be figured out.

Ha ha, we can but try! I'd definitely live with one for a bit but would need to get a charge point installed as the 3 pin charging is a bit laborious but I suppose not impossible.

Electric cars a permanent solution or just a stop gap? Nice to see a normal looking looking electric car!
@volkswizard

Looking very permanent judging by VW''s investment in them. Hybrid is the stop gap. Yes, e-Golf is for people who don't want to make a statement about being eco like the relatively inefficient hybrid Prius

Great review as always Andrew..Just ti put out there is also a Government Grant which pays £500 off a Home charging Point installation. I played £279 and the grant covered the other £500. You can charge the GTE is just 1 hr 15 mins and around 4-5 hours on a typical 7Kw charging point for the Egolf

I have a 2016 e-Golf and I live in Las Vegas. I love it! It has more than enough range for my in-town driving. The A/C is better than the Mercedes C-Class Sport. It is near-zero maintenance.; no oil changes, no oil or transmission leakage. The is the most flawless car I have ever owned. I have always used rental cars for long trips. I think most people who choose to go electric will never go back. Never, never choose a hybrid, they are the worst of two worlds.

I am guessing the price of topping up with electric ⚡️ will increase once a lot more people go electric ⚡️, I can’t see it being cheap to fill up for the long term
@volkswizard
@volkswizard 4 года назад
Definitely one to watch. I’m betting on road tax being scrapped and road charging coming in based on GPS tracking. Negates the need for a tax on the fuel which will be tricky to apply as domestic electricity is 5% tax, petrol/diesel is around 70!
@ajsstuff193
@ajsstuff193 4 года назад
Arif Ramzan electric probably won’t go up a lot to be honest, but mark my words, I bet they will sell cheap electric but it will take hours to charge, and they’d sell expensive electric that will charge your car in minutes/30mins for like £5 a minute or something lol 😂
@ariframzan8602

R-line H H the government and the petrol ⛽️ companies would need to get the £ they would lose if more electric was on the road .
@mconnah1

The government can’t increase the cost directly as you can make electricity yourself from solar panels for example.
