Volkswagen e-Golf vs. BMW i3 REx (ENG) - First Drive and Comparison

Volkswagen e-Golf has a claimed range of up to 200 kilometres. BMW i3 can squeeze up to around 160 kilometers, but it can be equipped with a petrol range-extender, which doubles its range. Can these cars do more, than just roam the metropolis?

I thought the i3 looked weird when it first came out. Months later it has become more distinctive than weird. I guess the look has grown on me, because I finally broke down and bought one in October '15, and I still drive with a smile on my face. It truly is a fun car to drive. This year I put photovoltaic panels on the roof of the house, so I feel like I'm driving a solar car.

To me the i3 looks absolutely amazing. If I had the appropriate commute I would be seriously considering it. Oh, and if I'm dreaming out loud my second car would probably be the Golf R Estate ... Actually adding up price tags of those cars brings me quite close to Tesla ... hmmm ...

Marek Drives Interesting Review! Thank you. I own a white BMW i3 BEV myself and for me it is incredible! The acceleration, no gear changes ...love it! I got the chance to test drive a Tesla Model S P85D and it drives similar. Well it does have more porsepower but is also twice as heavy than my i3 so you feel the weight. I really like the Model S, but i'll stick with my nimble i3 :).

Thing about i3 is when you need to go for long holiday you can drop off your i3 at the dealer and get 5 series for the trip (it's part of the purchase deal). Then come back and use your i3 for daily running around the city. This is a great solution until we have good fast chargers network.

@sixdoubledeuce

+Michal Gloc BMW has talked about doing this in the US, but I've yet to see it in writing. In my opinion, they need to pull the trigger. Here in Silicon Valley, they're overstocked with the i3 and some dealerships still have 2014s sitting on the lot. A free or discounted rental I think would make buyers more receptive to going to a higher price range.

At the moment I got a Peugeot 1007 with all the bells and whistles, great car for in a city (can also do autobahn 1.6 110 HP). Parking is fantastic not only due to its size but also the electronic sliding doors. The i3 with Rex would be a nice car for me. My commute is less than 20km per day vice versa as I occasionally go on a holiday or city trip. The Golf might be more practical (Sausage) the i3 Rex is a bit more special (Schnitzel). If it were my pick I'd go for teh i3 with Rex.

@MarekDrives 9 лет назад
Mehrdad Torabzadegan Not necessarily. The Golf is on some eco tires, and in the rain it was losing front end grip constantly. I didn't have that problem with the i3. Of course, i3 is RWD, but we tried drifting it, and it won't. TC remains on all the time.

@paguk2000
@paguk2000 6 лет назад
The I3 and the chevy volt are the 2 best affordable ev on the market until they sort the charging network.Example i give is you have done 100 miles that day you get home and suddenly decide to go out on a summer evening and you have 75 miles to do you want to guarantee you can get a part rapid charge to get you home with power to spare. before you all say thats easy however if you live in the middle on nowhere not so easy
@cfldriven
@cfldriven 4 года назад
That's a long drive for evening out. You get home from work, plug in the car. Two hours later you decide to go out and you should have enough. And if you plug in at your evening destination then you are solid. Two years w e-Golf never had this issue, anything that exceeds its range I'll grab spouse's Prius.

Everyone who sees it, everyone who get to ride in it, everyone who gets to DRIVE it, basically says, "My next car is going to be EV" It's just THAT far ahead of the curve in everything from construction, the design, the interior, and the performance. My wife does a 40km commute every day and it costs just $1.40 to recharge off-peak overnight for a full battery the next day. It also has the REX to get us out of trouble if we venture farther afield. Best car we have owned!

I'm keeping my eye on it for sure, we (for my wife) leased Infinity Q50 awd in December 2014 , and later, in 2015 I believe BMW were having a lease deal starting at around $350 a month(good deal in my books - a bit less than our Infinity ). Our Infinity lease ends in 19 month so I hope that 2017 model could get same promotion as 2015 model year buy that time (feb-murch , 2018) or posiply sell out Infinity even erlier if Bemmer will be a better choice. Hungary is still out of Tesla infrastructure, but with good DC chargers network there, that Eastern European tour wouldn't be a hassle for you.
@MarekDrives
@MarekDrives 7 лет назад
You just have to leave Poland first ;) A couple of months ago I did a quick test drive in the 2016 i3 with 90ah batteries and REx. My plan was to go from Warsaw to Poznań to visit a friend. 300 km door-to-door. In EcoPro at 70 km/h I should be able to make it on electric energy only, but we know it doesn't work that way. So I decided to stop in Aleksandrów Łódzki, which means I have to add about 20-30 km, but there's a fast charger in front of ABB factory over there. I arrived to find out it has the Japanese plug (round), and I have the European plug (flat bottom). So at that time I knew I was screwed, and had to drive on REx, which means refuelling about every 100 km. A friend, who owns a Tesla, has all sort of adapters and converters to plug the car anywhere he needs. He also suggested that during this trip I may have to stop not only in Aleksandrów, but also on one of the petrol stations, where they have a DC socket behind an ATM. I should just go there, and ask the clerk if I can use it, eat lunch for an hour, and then I should be able to make it driving at a normal speed (110-120 km/h). We're not quite there yet :)

+Roy Pounsford No shit! It's not like I have much choice in the EV segment. A couple of years back I'd be limited i-MiEV vs. LEAF.

+bingoberra18 and a price tag many find hard to pay. The Golf is also way too expensive... leaving us with the Leaf and i-miev as best bets for people on a budget.

+djkenny the 2016 e-Golf SE model is same price as the Leaf and Focus. Between those three, E-Golf is the easy winner. But as far as bang for buck goes, two words: Chevy Volt.

Welp, a base Prius Plug in is 29k. Not bad. about 10 miles completely electric, then over 50 MPG highway. The Mitsubishi is my fave bang for the buck model. I even liek the interior and maneuverability better than the Leaf. The Leaf end up about 18k or less depending on incentives in the area purchased and o your taxes. The Mitsu is barely 16k. I will take that. the Golf is pretty spendy, like 30 grand or more, and likely only falls to low 20's after incentives kick in.

Well, the Prius Plug-in only gets a $2,500 credit in the US, compared to $7,500 for the E-Golf, i3, Leaf, etc. And considering the Prius's popularity I don't think there's as much negotiation room as you can get with the others, too. So that does turn the tables on the cost factor. Personally I can't consider the i-MiEV due to its looks and pokey performance, but with that low price-point it's essentially a 4-door version of the Spark, which will have appeal to some.

With the black and white paint it doesn't look like a storm trooper helmet. A storm trooper helmet looks awesome. The i3 on the other hand looks like a deformed piece of garbage :3

That's what I thought as well. Now I've bought one. Super fun to drive, nice interior, and innovative construction! And the look has grown on me.

Its funny you say that since my i3 ( which I love by the way) has storm trooper stickers on it because I thought the same thing. Its also funny that you think its deformed garbage which is impossible because it looks like a storm trooper which means its AWESOME!!! ;)))

+Person Personsson the x model doesn't come with a petrol engine. it's still not a hybrid, the range extender is just a generator supplying power for the electrical engine. you get the best of both worlds, you get an electrical car with fantastic acceleration, and the option of choosing to fuel it if you need to go further instead of having to wait for it to be charged.
@Mishibar
@Mishibar 8 лет назад
+Person Personsson what are you on about ? I didn't mention Tesla either. I abbreviated REx to x considering that the generator doesn't add much weight OR take up much space, then yeah I'd say you get the best of both worlds, I wish the fueltank in the generator would have been bigger though.
@Mishibar

+Person Personsson you keep mentioning hybrids. the i3 isn't a hybrid. the motor is ALL electric in the i3. stop comparing it to hybrids
@Mishibar
@Mishibar 8 лет назад
+Person Personsson for the third time, it does NOT have a petrol engine. IT'S A GENERATOR, NOT AN ENGINE. charging a ELECTRICAL engine with a PETROL fueled GENERATOR, does NOT magically turn the electrical engine into a HYBRID. XD

+Person Personsson my friendly neighbor drives a Tesla P85D, I haven't driven it myself but he's been kind enough to give me the awesome experience of feeling it's acceleration quite a few times. we drive a i3 (without range extender) as rental, and my company car which I'm driving at this moment is a Hybrid (Toyota auris) I've driven both EV's and hybrids quite a lot. according to my neighbor the range is a LOT lower miles in bad weather if driven normally. Don't believe the figures the manufacturers give you.
