I have to congratulate you Sir. It was lovely when you did the tribute to Princess Diana. It was filled with wonderful stories and reflections on the positive and fun side of her. Well done you!🇦🇺🇬🇧
My grandmother would take us strawberry picking every summer when I was a kid. We wore bucket hats and had a bucket, walking up and down the rows of strawberries. 🍓 I’ve only gone blueberry picking once but I remember getting lost in the tall vines. Such good times. 😀
I used to pick blackberries with my Nana as a child in Tyneside over 65 years ago. They grew everywhere in the hedgerows, as well as back gardens, and we all loved them in pies or crumbles. It was such a treat, and as they were free nobody would dream of turning down a blackberry anything. Happy days. 😊
I have always liked British food. But you have made British classics very accessible to us here in the US. Thank you for your knowledge, experiences, and your kind and genteel manner. More of people like you are needed.
I learned to make apricot crumble at school in the 80s here in Australia. We served it with vanilla ice cream. It still is one of my favourite desserts.
That sounds sooo good. Never seen it here in the USA. Is the recipe you followed like this one with apricots instead of blackberries and apples? This would be great for church potlucks.
It’s always interesting to see how similar British cuisine is to southern cuisine. This dish would feel right at home on any dinner table in the south.
I'm with you on the rhubarb crumble, and so is my family. I grow my own rhubarb. I moved recently and had to leave several gigantic rhubarb plants behind. I was very sad, but will be putting in more in my new garden. And I will surely try this blackberry concoction!
One of my Mom's cookbooks also gave histories for many recipes. I recall one for a crumble that was from a cookbook from the late 1700's. So it has been around for awhile along w/Brown Betty, Pan Dowdy, & several others (at least in the USA).
Thank you Master Chef Darren McGrady. Again, thank you. Yummy 🤤 yummy 🤤 yummy 🤤!!!!! Please give fabulous Winston an enormous hug 🤗 from me to him ( with 💗 love).
Hello Chef Darren, growing up in the Midwest part of the US we had rhubarb crumble, but I love all the fruit crumbles much better. I must try yours, it looks yummy.
I'm totally with you on this one, Darren. A crumble without crumbs? Those nuggets are the best part! Why don't we all just pack it in and give up on life, since apparently nothing matters anymore? A crumble without crumbs... Joyless monsters!
It was great to join you in sampling my delicious Apple & Blackberry Crumble with Custard as you were sampling yours at the same time! I imagine yours was as delicious as mine! X
Thank you darren for this delicious crumble recepie. Crumble is one of my favorite puddings. Did chicken and dumplings for my friends and it was a great hit.
My grandmother made the the best rhubarb crumble I ever tasted ,,,,,,, she grew it in her garden, and she always made it for me , I can’t make it taste as good as hers did..... it’s one of my strongest memories of her . Miss her ,,,,,,,,, watching from Buckinghamshire 🇬🇧
I've never had a fruit crumble in my life. But it sounds like the perfect summertime dessert with all the fresh fruit that's readily available and in season. Brownies were the first dessert I l learned to make from scratch, and I was 19. I'm actually eating cherries while watching this video.
Blackberries and apple are a favourite combination they are delicious. Crumbles are quick and easy to make and delicious too try it you will be delughted
I grew up eating Apple Crisps mostly and the occasional cobbler because there were/are apple trees and other fruit and nut trees at my great-grandparents old Farmhouse as well as at my grandparents house located next door, (we farmed wine and raisin grapes before recently transitioning to almonds here in the Central San Joaquin Valley of California) and crisps were the quickest dessert and didn't require any fancy ingredients. It does require heating up the oven, which is misery in our 115°F summer heat, which is why I haven't enjoyed one of these desserts in years. I've never thought to combine our apples with any blackberries though. The apples are ripe now and I still have some of our last raisin crop and last years almond crop too, so perhaps that could make a nice crumble. My late Grandma would probably have enjoyed this dessert. She had the biggest sweet tooth! She actually remembered when Queen Elizabeth's grandfather passed away, when her uncle, her father and when she all came to power as she was born in 1919.
Just baked this Darren. I added Xylitol sweetener to the cooked Birds custard in order to try to reduce Sugar consumption! It's such an easy and quick pudding to create, as well as being delicious and warming as we are now in the Autumnal season in the UK. Bon Appetite and thank you for your entertaining company and 'Royal' Cookery lessons and demonstrations as well as the interesting history. Plus seeing young Winston! Happy cooking X Mary
Pick your own farms aren’t cheap anymore. Enter them and whistle goodbye to money sense. The blackberries are good there of course, but for me it’s the humble hedgerow. Pick them from wild and enjoy the foraging. I enjoyed this vid. Thank you.
Chef McGrady this pudding looks so good especially with real milk/cream custard. I made a jumbled berry crumble last evening and used chopped walnuts and sunflower seeds plus a little bit of oat flakes in crumble mixture. It gave the pudding a little extra crunch ... Delicious!
Blackberry crumble brings back so many Autumn memories when my mom was still alive. I like to pick the blackberries myself and then make the crumble. Or apple crumble with custard. Best served warm with vanilla custard. But it only tastes when its Autumn - summer temperatures are to hot for this delicious dessert. I also like to make it for Christmas since it can be well prepared in advance.
You forgot the recipes in the description box. I love, love, love your demos and, most of all, your stories with the history behind the dish! Thank you.
Oh, my. This is it. I am going to do this for Christmas dessert! What a gorgeous plate. I bought the famous Royal Doulton, "Carlyle" dark green with gold pattern, when I was 19 y.o....I'm 70 now, and this dessert is worthy of such beautiful china. I have never eaten this, but blackberries have to be sublime, with that custard. -- Ft. Worth, TX
My mum and I used to go blackberry picking in late August sept and make crumble for tea . She used to make it lumpy too and put brown Demerara sugar over top delicious with birds custard made up . Those were the days .
I have had bad COVID and still recovering I only wish you could cook me one of your burgers not that I would be able to taste it thanks for posting all your videos 👍👍
I only make apple and blackberry crumble once a year, but every time I always look forward to it! I’ve probably had it for about the past 8 years and I just made some yesterday and was delicious. Only just found out about this channel but it was a great video and I am now subscribed 👍
I love your channel! Found you on Delish featuring the royal family favorites and couldn't help but hunt you down. It's relaxing to watch you cook and tell stories or just talk in general. Thanks for sharing your talents with us!
My grandmother is from Scotland and I used to make this a lot growing up. We used blackberries and strawberries mostly but we did make a strawberry and rhubarb once too.
Oh my goodness, this looks like a wonderful dessert! I’ve never paired a fruit crumble with custard, but I will be trying this soon! Thanks for sharing, Chef! 💕☕️
@@nyancs7098 We usually serve a fruit crumble warm and top each serving with vanilla ice cream that melts. Can't wait to try it with custard, I'm sure it's delicious!
I’m diabetic so rarely have desserts, but I do love a home made crumble made with locally foraged blackberries, so much so that I’m very happy to enjoy a hearty-ish apple and blackberry crumble. Or a home made tarte tatin, served with custard. 🤤
You could use a ground almonds/coconut flour instead of wheat flour. It takes a bit of experimentation to get the quantities right but it's worth the effort, but always butter, never margerine. Also, I use a few eating apples and one baking apple and no sugar, as I try to eat a low carb diet. Looking at what he uses for his custard I'd use half and half if I was in the USA :D
I'm not going to lie, if I dared to try to make this delectable thing, I fear even my pet rabbit would go after it! On a serious note, I would love to experiment and try to pull off a rabbit-friendly little dessert. Rabbits can't have citrus but if one is careful, they can have a bit of cream/milk.
Great timing! Just got some blackberries and was trying to decide what to make with them- this recipe is it. I've made several of the recipes from your vids over the past year- keep up the good work!
Yes crunchy nuggets in the crumble, I also like some uncrushed pieces of potato in the mash topping on a cottage pie, not the really fine mash with butter, just a personal thing. Your videos always make me hungry.
I'm seeing this 2yrs late, but I've been following for almost a year. LOVE THIS! My only disappointment; if any at all, is that at the end of the videos when showing finished product, there isn't a close-up shot. Otherwise, all of your recipes are TO DINE FOR!!😊😋
Always need a few nuggets in a crumble. I made rhubarb at the weekend as I have a bit of a glut of rhubarb in my garden. I use golden caster sugar for the fruit and damera sugar for the crumble. I add a splash of sloe gin to my blackberry and pear crumble, delish
My Favorite Crumble is Peach and pear followed by Apple with custard yummie. :) always great to lisen to stories about you working for the Royal Family. great Video Looking forward to next.
OMG thank you for this recipe! We have so many apples in the garden nowadays and I was thinking about what I will gonna do with them. Also, we had blackberries in the fridge from last year so thank you very much!!
