Chopin actually did write 17 polish songs for voice and piano. Check Wikipedia's list for a complete enumeration. So yes, it technically is incorrect for one to refer to Chopin's solo piano pieces as "songs" but I just think too many classical music aficionados can be a bit too pedantic about this, thus making them look rather pretentious...it gives our community a bad reputation.

This is a bit unnacurate. Ive been playing piano for 16 years and im pretty shure that nocturnes are waaaaay easier than mazurkas. Also, 3 years?! Hell no. Not everything in chopin is learning the notes. You need to learn how to use the pedal propperly and the sound control must be almost perfect. Beside that, good vid ^^

I started learning the Nocturne No.20 in C-sharp minor op. posth. some months after I began with my piano teacher. (I played 1 year on my own before that). It was a bit hard in the beginning, but still approachable, surprisingly. In the beginning I did not get the phrasing all right ... Although I actively listened to piano recordings and had ideas of how to create good music. I have devoloped a better technique and of understanding music since then (1 year later). My control and pedaling is at an ok level. My playing is still far from perfect or advanced, but still satisfying.

@@davidzhang6990 you taught yourself for a year and then tried to learn a level 10 Chopin piece? i hope you didn't try to learn it just because you thought it "sounded good". i hate seeing beginners or self-taught pianists jump to La Campanella or some difficult piece after less than 2 years just because they think it sounds good, and then totally butcher it because they're missing all the fundamentals and only barely have the notes down. those people are truly sacrilegious.
@davidzhang6990
@davidzhang6990 4 года назад
@@goofballcartoonist7848 No, I am absolutely not that type of guy, and I see your point. And I didn't learn it because I thought it sounded good or whatever you mean by that... My teacher showed it to me and recommended me to learn it. I was sceptical in the beginning for being too hard, and it clearly was, but I had to trust my teacher on that. But after some time I managed and I play it at a decent level today. Anyway, La Campanella and Nocturne No.20 in C-sharp minor are not comparable... La Campanella is at a much, much higher level.
@BuffaloBillBtch
@BuffaloBillBtch 4 года назад
Just because you have played for 16 years don't mean you know how difficult these pieces are. How about actually playing them instead of making a null point. And the mazurkas mentioned in this video are definitely easier than most of the Nocturnes.

Chopin's Nocturne in C# minor isn't too difficult apart from the middle section and the ornaments in the final section. It's apparently an ABRSM grade 7, but I started learning it pretty much immediately after my grade 4. The main challenge is simply getting the emotion of the piece across effectively. Oh and as with all Chopin pieces, large hands are preferable.

Hey:) There is one thing i want to say to all of you who are afraid now to try some of his pieces: I started learning the piano from when i was 7 years old to about the age of 11 but then i stopped because i was losing motivation and had to force myself to go to the lessons. Then, in january 2016 i decided that i wanted to start again! So i did and it was the best decision ever! Okay Why am i telling you this: So far i have learned many Chopin pieces but especially 3 Nocturnes (and currently working on my 4th one) because i fell in love with them the first time i listened to them. So if it is your dream to learn one of his pieces and you are willing to invest time and willpower then try practicing this piece!! Don't let anyone tell you that this is too advanced for you (okay maybe your teacher might be right) but still just try it!! Because you really have nothing to lose and maybe you will be able to Play your "dream-piece" in near future ❤️

Actually, with lots of practice, they are both do-able. I've played 25/6 and messed around with 25/11. They're both fairly short and if you don't mind being a few clicks under tempo I would say go for it.
@paulgullesh5275

I think it depends on if if you have already played any of Chopin's etudes. I have played op.10 nos. 2,4,5,12 and op.25 nos 6,11 and came to the conclusion that op.25 no 11 is by far the most difficult of the bunch and it should not be attempted before playing some of Chopins easier etudes. If you haven't played any of his etudes yet I would recommend starting with either op.10 no 5 or op. 10 no 12 and then progressing to op. 10 no. 4, which I feel yields the most technical benefits. Then I would start looking into etudes like op. 10 no 2 or op. 25 nos 6,11.

i'm not sure, i've played piano for only a year and a half, already, i'm playing ballade 1 and chopin etude op 10 no.4 it's certainly not out of reach if you put in the time to learn it. people aren't willing to put in the hard work in order to learn these pieces properly. Go in with the mindset that all music is, is music. music is easy, music is what's written on a page. you can learn technique along the way. everything now a days is too orderly. but certainly, some pieces are harder than others and i guess that's the point of this. but when you say they should put it off until later, i disagree. There is no such thing as a systematic approach to piano. sure there are better ways but Anyone and everyone can learn difficult pieces if they really actually wanted to. let's face it, it's difficult to make a career out of piano. don't waste your time playing things you don't want to play just to "work up" to the music you want to play. don't be discouraged, in fact, be inspired and challenge yourself to learn difficult repertoire. you'd be surprised at how fast you can improve by learning difficult pieces now. The 6 months you spend or whatever learning that piece, will make every other piece you learn a piece of cake. Don't worry about emotion or all those difficult convoluted topics. in the end, it'll show when you perform it. technique is not your interpretation, it is just a means to an end. you'll naturally play it the way you like it, that's your interpretation. the composers are dead, their music is alive only because YOU are playing it. they cannot rise from the dead and slap you for not playing it the way it's written. play it as you see fit. Go on a journey, play piano, and enjoy the process of learning. forget about difficulty and go and learn what you want to learn as long as it takes.
@agamaz5650

100% agreed
@primeartonline-pianocovers1535
I agree with you on some points, but not at the emotions/convoluted topics. If anything, that's what makes some pieces difficult, and technically you haven't fully "mastered" a piece/play it professionally without these aspects and nuances of the music

I couldn't agree more... I've been playing for over 10 years now, with teachers teaching me pieces that I never liked, and I have a level 6 biw I'd say... I stopped taking lessons as they are completely conterproductive for me. I've started learning ballade no.1 this week and I've been putting so much time and effort into it. I still cant play the middle but I know I will be able to play it decently if I work hard enough. My sight reading is better than ever, and I'm finally learning something that I love. [Edit] okay so I dont know if anyone will ever read this, but I'd just like to let anyone know who was reading this comment that even if I literally spent so much time learning ballade in g minor, I'm up to about 4:35 in most recordings, and I've realized that I dont really like the next 3 minutes of the music. I've worked so hard for the beginning so I'm giving up on the end and enjoying playing what I can. I'll go back to it when I'm older, it's no use forcing your brain if you can play something else that you love. Okay that's it, bye!

nocturne no.1 in b flat minor was one of the first chopin songs I learned. It was technically pretty unchallenging, but you really gotta put emotion in there. I think it's a good starter because it introduces you to some of Chopins meticulously over-ornamented later style without also forcing you to perform some of the astounding feats of musicianship that many of his pieces require. Yes, this beautiful piece is actually manageable after some hard work and lot of desire. Here are some tips for managing it and some traps I fell into: * I cannot play it very well on every piano. The instrument itself needs to respond on what I am doing. Some (older and cheaper) pianos are just hopeless. And some brands work better or worse just for you! (For me, I prefer playing Fantasie Impromptu on a Yamaha rather than Steinway). * When I first looked at it; oh no, trips in the left combined with fourths in the right. Yes, there are RU-vid tutorings of handling it. But when I finally took the math out of the piece and looked at it as "running water" (undefineable) I then conquered all the obsticles. * In the second part, there is actually a melody heard on every fourth note. Inside my head I there go "di-di da-da di-di-di..." The rest of the notes are just there for its completion so to speak. You may try just to play the melody to start with. * Need to learn how to master Chopin sound control by using the sustain pedal properly. There is funny video about this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-djkpfItBhmY.html * Listen to it from the masters. Personally I find this version to be one of the best: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tvm2ZsRv3C8.html * It is a "fantasie". I perform better if I dream away, trying just to hear what I am playing, less looking what my hands are doing. Sounding good is better then looking good, in my opinion. (My former piano teacher would disagree). * Get a feel for it and play from your heart!

So... she's a piano 'teacher' who calls Chopin's pieces "songs" and provides simplified versions of classical repertoire on her channel.. Not hating on her or anything, she's probably a decent pianist but honestly I feel like she's more of a piano fanatic than an actually talented player. I'm assuming she can't play most, if any, of the Chopin etudes, ballades, impromptus, etc. She literally said "most advanced players can't play these, save these for dream goals/when you're a master"
@barbarajanesowak882

she has her grade 1O RCM, I think, maybe more so she has to be an advanced level pianist..... how good we dont know, not all good teachers are the best musicians , they are more talented at teaching. From what I have heard, hmmmmmm...... I agree about calling the pieces "songs" lol...but the simplified versions and advice is great- I am grade 8 level, working on some grade 9 pieces and I like and appreciate her thoughts....plus, you an find simple versions of classical repertoire online which is nice for earlier level pianists who would like to try to play one, they can get exposed and later, try the actual piece. So, she is kind of indicating to people they can try these pieces Cheers

I personally feel that this piece should have made it into Chopin's easiest pieces. However, this is my opinion, perhaps I am wrong. Anyway, good work! Thanks for posting!

"Looking to start Chopin seriously after Fantaisie-Impromptu" "See Polonaise Op.53 in A flat major as easiest Polonaise to start with" I will show myself the door ... But in my opinion, Fantaisie-Impromptu is probably the easiest to start with after a few Nocturnes/Waltzes, it sounds great as far as Chopin goes and the only real problem is the timing between two hands, which is easy to grip with after a month.

But I learned it from RU-vid, and can't read sheet music, so makes sense. Basically jumped right off to it after learning the starting of nocturne 9 2, and comptine d'un autre été.

Maybe not as your first Chopin piece 😅 But I chose to learn it as my first Chopin Etude and it’s going pretty well, It’s very emotional, heartbreakingly sad and beautiful at the same time and engaging and joyful as well. I really love the mixture and even if you’re not completely ready for the second part you can still achieve a very nice version of the first part in my opinion, and I think sometimes it’s worth it to try to play just parts of a piece, it still is an achievement 🤷🏻‍♀️

@@miguelfernandez5583 Ah come on, It's pretty obvious we were talking about technical difficultiy here (and in the video as well) I just argued it can be worth a try, not that beginner to intermediate piano players should necessarily perform a piece like that early on. But interpretation is highliy personal and I believe your kind of thinking is such an ego thing, you can't forbid people to do their own thing even with difficult pieces. I often tried stuff that was to difficult at that time and came back later and was able to see the progress I made, and how much more capable of playing what I heard in my mind I was. Because the interpretation and the ideas were always there, but it often is the technicality that holds you back.

@@Lotte-xw3ze Of course, people can do whatever they want, and yes, if you see it only on the thechnique side it is easy, but I don't see the point on playing a segment where the difficulty lies on musicality for thechnique, that's why i said "if you are not able to see the difficulty then leave it for when you are able". Now, I'd love to hear your explanation on why my ego was envolved.

It's great that these videos are being made, but I have to strongly disagree with some of the conclusions. The Fantasie-Impromptu is FAR less difficult than any of the scherzos! The Etude in Fm (Op. 25 #2) is quite a bit easier than the grade assigned to it; it's all single notes, and they fall naturally under the hand. But the Ab Polonaise is *very* challenging, far more than the A major. And if you want a prelude that will just kill you, #16 in Bbm is as difficult as anything Chopin wrote.

Amanda M You'll get it! Fantasie Impromptu was actually the first Chopin piece I learned (and believe me I had to REALLY convince my teacher to relent and let me do that) but the truth is, once you get comfortable with the notes in the runs ( c# minor is such a clunky key to play in, at least for me lol) and once you get that 3 against 4 fluid between your hands, you'll find the piece to just begin to flow really comfortably. Now I was so pleased at how I was able to handle the Fantasie that the very next year, I got a bit carried away and decided to try the Op. 25 No. 11 Etude "Winter Wind". Now that... did not go so well!

I learned the whole fantaisie impromtu and i dont even have piano lessons. Honestly dont let anyone tell a piece is out of your possibilities. If u think so, it sure is. My tip is: if you can learn a piece in veryyyy slow version u definitely also can play it fast. I just learned impromptu very slow at the beginning and if u play it often enough and over weeks your brain will do the work in the background until it's all muscle memory. It's amazing if you struggle with a part for hours and on the next day u try it again and it magically works. This is because your brain makes those neuronal connections in your sleep. Just be persistent, try, try, try and eventually your brain will catch on

People watching this, don't bother with this negative BS. You can attempt to play whatever piece you like whenever you want. Pieces are graded subjectively. And different pianists have different abilities. This is the most discouraging load of advice I've ever heard. And I actually thought it would be useful.
@firstbourne8799
@firstbourne8799 5 лет назад
Again she was pointing out these pieces that are ideal to start. And any, and I mean AAANY piano teacher/professor/college would always disagree with "play whatever you like". Unless you don't want to take classical music seriously or you don't mind sounding bad/lacking technique at all. I've had a teacher that taught students that want to play what ever they like whenever they want, I was the only one who had a music background starting from the basic to advanced. And let me tell you they all sound horrible. And it's not my teacher that was bad, he helped me learn ballade 1 in a month easily because I had a PROPER music background. where as most of them want to play Chopin's op 25 no 5(wrong note) or op 25 no 11(winter wind) just because they watched it in an anime.
@firstbourne8799
@firstbourne8799 5 лет назад
Plus she wasn't being negative at all, she was just stating the obvious of which ones are ideal for beginner, intermediate and advance pianists. Cause if what you're saying has a point to it, then you're basically saying "oh hurrdurr play whatever you want, no one can stop you. If you want to play Chopin's op 10 no 2(hardest etude) go for it, follow your dreams! Or if you want to start his adante spianato and grande polonaise, do it! Hurrdurr if it sounds beautiful like his ballade 4 play it I won't judge you hurrdurr." People like you encourage others to be lazy, and believe in themselves that they can do it without proper training. No they can't. Not everyone can unless you have pure talent. Which would obviously show if you can play his etudes at the age of 12 or below. Every professional pianist starts from the bottom. The very bottom, minuet in g minor bottom, then work their way up. There is no easy route, babyfied easier way, if you want to play Chopin's advanced pieces you have to start at least 2 of his beginner pieces then slowly work up to advanced. No one can learn advanced pieces the way they want it to be quick and easy.

I hate the "grade" system you English use. It's awful. I've been playing for 2.5 years and am able to play some of the aforementioned "grade 8-ARCT" pieces. It's a really bad system, how do you even categorize the pieces? It's all subjective. It can't be categorized this way- some people have an easy time with different things than other people. I've played Chopin's "grade 8" mazurkas, his nocturnes and am learning the etude op 10 no 5. I've had a piano teacher the entire time. You might argue that I might have just skimmed over the pieces, but in fact, I've "juiced" everything those pieces could give me, and I've performed some of them on a few recitals. And yet, here you are, practically discouraging people from even attempting some of these pieces, because you believe they are "too hard". I don't agree with you at all. If they practice "correctly", it is doable in very few years time. My point is that the grade system is horrible and it discourages piano students from playing the pieces that they want to play.
@__jan
@__jan 7 лет назад
Yes, Bach pieces take so much energy to learn. They might sound "simple", but in fact, Bach wrote, arguably, the hardest pieces, ever. But my teacher taught me one very important lesson- we have to dirty our hands, too. We have to sometimes play what we don't like, so that we improve. Bach teaches us so many important piano skills, that in fact his pieces are some of the most important in technique. You could compare them to études, but more often than not, his pieces focus on musical hearing, since playing a 3-part symphony or a fugue is no joke, in terms of splitting the theme evenly into your hands/fingers. But after all is done and all is played, we can return to our "oasis", the music we enjoy, the music that truly fuels us to keep going. My point is, you have to play what you don't enjoy. But if you listen closely enough, you can find beauty in any piece. From the simplest to the most complicated. :)

Exactly my point, thank you. :)

Simple reply: No. Not so simple reply: I said I try to squeeze every last bit out of the piece that I can, perfect it as much as my hands will allow me to. You can learn piano "grade 8" pieces as a 2~ish year beginner. Most of chopin's etudes for example aren't even as difficult as she implies here- they are designed to fit into your hand snugly, so it's really all about practicing for long periods of time and playing them over and over again, also changing the rhythm on them and/or playing them staccato/legato/portamento etc... To build confidence. That's all it takes- you will build tempo naturally this way. As for the "feeling" part- this is what Chopin's pieces are notorious for, they require a very sensitive touch, which many people cannot build even after years and years of practice, which is where I believe the "chopin pieces are hard" idea comes from. They're not, they're just difficult to express properly. That wasn't even my point, my point was that the grade system is rubbish. End of story. :)
@YSFmemories
@YSFmemories 7 лет назад
Um, actually, no. There's just so much wrong with that. Chopin etudes are NOT designed to "fit into your hand snugly" LOL. In fact, just the opposite; many of them are designed to be extremely awkward, to train your hand into being able to play awkward positions. Key examples are Op. 25 no.3, Op 25 no.6, and Op.25 no.5. Secondly, how long it takes obviously depends more on effort, time spent, and to a much lower extent, talent. The timelines Piano Teachers gives in Canada tend to be extremely relaxed, following the least enthusiastic and least talented students. Many people I know managed to pass the Grade 10 exam within 1-2 years of starting the piano. 3rd, obviously things aren't that simple. Sure, it's not like a student at Grade 5 can't learn a grade 6 piece. That would be silly. But the amount of time spent is proportional to your skill level. It might take a grade 1 student 5 months to learn a grade 10 piece. An experienced teacher might be able to sight read it better than that grade 1 student after 5 months' worth of effort. It obviously makes sense to improve your overall skill rather than to struggle over months and months for every single piece you want to learn, unless you only ever want to learn 1 or 2. Furthermore, you can play a piece to the best of your current ability, but that doesn't mean that it's good. If you improved your overall skill level, then the "best of your ability" also improves; the ceiling is higher, and the quality that you are able to reach is higher. Finally, OBVIOUSLY it's not like math, where 1 is obviously bigger than 2. Sometimes, some pieces are easier for some people but harder for others. There's a lot of subjectivity involved. But everyone can agree that the trascendental etudes are harder than london bridge is falling down or hot cross buns. There obviously are different levels of difficulty, and while the grading system is not 100% perfect, it does a good job of giving people an idea of roughly what to expect.

You think this is hard?! When I started learning piano, the first piece I played was Liebestraum!
@cobblie8789
@cobblie8789 5 лет назад
you must play it like shit edit: it does sound shit. you can't just start learning the piano with liebestraum no. 3, and if you do you're *not* going to get very far in the piece anyway. so you're stuck on an unfinished, horrible sounding liebestraum. it might be cool to brag with, but in the long run someone who starts out playing songs appropriate for their level will play everything better than you do if you play way too hard songs. harder songs often times develop bad habits on uncapable players, like me when i just started out and let met tell you, fixing these bad habits because you were too cocky at first can really, really slow you down. so i suggest learning pieces that fit your level of playing.

Well, I made a mistake trying to learn the nocturne in c-sharp minor no.20 at my 6th year of playing. Also noting that it was the beggining of the quarantine, and there was no teacher who could assist me. It took me like 7 months to somewhat Perfect it

I started that song two months ago and I played most of the first page without that much effort, but the rest is a lot harder and has been taking a lot longer

Let's be honest here. Is there such a thing as an "easy" or "hard" piece? If you play it in slow motion it's all doable. Then pick up the pace later.

Sergio Sergio thank you, I will give it go. I mean I can't be 100% perfect, there's probably some mistakes here and there.
@LucasGottfried

I think he did not mean the mistakes you do but the way you interpret and shape it. Playing pieces is the one thing but really mastering them is a long process (most of the time you change your interpretations after a while depending on your situation, so I guess we can never truly "master" a piece but play it as best as we are able to)
