I’m 67 years old and just now growing plants and I’m learning a lot from you. You are still a teacher. You just have a different connection and you’re educating a larger audience. Keep up the good work. I watched planterina. I was wondering why some of my plants didn’t look like hers and some died. With you I’m more focused on growing and letting go of my plants that don’t make it.

i'm loving hearing about some of the sciency bits of house plants. i feel like so much of houseplant culture is folklore and word of mouth, its nice to remember these are plants the biologists study too

For the prayer plants; stromanthe triostar and magic star are also really easy in my opinion. And a big plus is that most prayer plants are not toxic to cats. I also had great succes with maranta tricolor/red and the lemon one. And the Calathea medaillon (but these big). I have all prayer plants in my window in the kitchen. That window is north/west facing but when the sun gets to the west in the evening, the sun is also so low that the house of my neighbours blocks it. So they rarely get direct sun light. It's pretty dark there. And the moisture of cooking also seems to help. All of them have brown Crispy edges sometimes. And be aware of spider mites. (I got rid of my giant medaillon because it kept getting spidermites. I will replace it soon because I really miss it in my collection)

Great content! Here are some others to consider from the same genus selection: Anthurium: A. andraeanum (Flamingo Flower) I have a collection of four different colors (Red, White, Pink, Violet) in a North window and they bloom almost constantly. Maranta: 'Rabbit Tracks' (M. leuconeura), Rattlesnake (Geoppertia insigniss), and Musaica (G. kegeljanii) also have had good luck with Ctenanthe burle-marxii (Fishbone). Agree with all of your selections though, what a great video! I have some kind of fern that is a 'volunteer' in several of my houseplants, but I"m not sure what it is - I think it is a type of maidenhair, but not the one you see typically sold. Also, another very easy 'fern' (that's not actually a fern) is the Asparagus fern (Asparagus densiflorous 'sprengeri') My mom (who is in her mid 80s) has a huge one that used to be her mother's.

will second g. kegljanii and c. "burle marx". I have a lot of marantaceae but I really like these two because a little bit of care produces really great results, they are always putting out new leaves for me, makes me a proud plant papa. I have seen people grow g. orbifolia with similar results in greenhouses, but mine doesn't look like that, I think its more of a greenhouse plant than house plant.

I really loved this video!! I find alocasia very easy for me. I have over 20 species and for the most part all do well. I don't get spider mites, only when they're stressed. Only happened to my regal shields when she was root bound. The jewel alocasia are more finicky, my black velvet has stunted after putting out 3 inflos. Anthuriums also do very well for me, I find that I don't have to do much for them. I water when mostly dry with foliage pro. My conditions are 85F and 75%+ humidity. I have killed far more philodendron than any other genus😅, but I'm learning and the ones I currently have are doing well.
@redpanda1519
@redpanda1519 Год назад
the Alocasia maharani is actually a hybrid of Alocasia melo and black velvet! That’s probably why it’s a lot easier.

I love this content. For me living in Humid Ontario 🇨🇦 zone 5 my Alocasia Polly is my prized possession. She is vocal in that her leaf will start to droop at the petiole when she wants a soaking. The humidity in my home is 54% and 22c. I give her a very light mist every morning as well. She gave me inflorescence last January. I have not tried Hoya yet but it's on my plant bucket list now for sure.

This was a fun video! Fyi ferns are actually a family (called Pteridaceae), not a genus. For example, a staghorn fern is called Platyceriumn '___' because Platycerium is the genus. Also, the backs of the leaves are called the abaxial. the front is called the adaxial.

I got a monstera at my local grocery store. It was big when I purchased it but as soon as I put her on a wood plank her leaves went from 12 inches to 24 inches across! The aerial roots are so long now and the new leaves are coming out closer together than growth before the plank. But it’s definitely an easy care monstera.

Ficus elastica was my first houseplant in my current place and it's still going strong 12 years on! It took a while to get to know it properly but now it's taller than me and it functions almost like a room divider. My number one tip would be: don't be shy to prune it early on to encourage branching if you want it to be more bushy, mine grew very tall and lanky without branching and that wasn't great. I should just have chopped the tips off when it was much smaller. It's good now but it took a lot longer than it could have.

Ferns do SO well for me, I don’t really know how! But here’s what I’ve figured out….when I bring them in for the winter I put them close to an east window because they still do want light and it’s darker inside in the winter anyway, so it’s still not that strong. Also you can and should cut them back in February/ March because there simply will be die-off but they’ll bounce back twice as big and luscious in the summertime! Of course keep them damp and away from a heater indoors, but just remember to expect some browning, but it’s just part of it’s winter vibe. 😂

i neglect my ferns & they thrive hahaha, but ive only had boston ferns & tend to put them in an east facing window & water whenever the top of the soil feels dry, one of my childhood houses had a greenhouse with a fern wall fountain thing & it definitely started my love of ferns! edit: my fuchsia has begrudgingly taken to the pot!! (she needed a trim anyway) now to see if she'll survive the drive to a new climate

The Rabbit's Foot Fern is super easy. I'm in Tempe so it's very dry here. I don't give it any special humidity at all. They actually need bright light (mine gets some direct morning sun) and don't like to dry all the way out, but other than that, super easy. Highly recommend.

I have about 5 calatheas. The Orbifolia is actually one of the most fickle for me. It looked terrible acclimating, then it had great new growth. Then I couldn't get the watering schedule down during the changing seasons and it looked awful again. When my orb needed repotting, it also turned a few leaves ugly. Unfortunately, this one is my favorite, so I will deal with it until i can figure it out! The easiest are the rufibarba next to the makoyana. They looked pretty decent acclimating and kept putting out new growth. Some crisping edges but not as noticeable because they have lots of new growth. The orb tends to grow slower and imperfect leaves are more obvious since there are less of them.

The ones i have had that have struggled are succulents, peperomia’s, Alocasia and Draceana’s. The Rabbit Foot Fern that scares me and creeps me out as i am scared of spiders looks like have spider legs coming out of the pot.

I have a few boston ferns and they just need a lot of water. Like every 3-4 days. I keep a water catcher attached underneath. I fertilizer every time I water. They are HEAVY feeders. Also I mist them everyday. They are like babies they need a lot of attention but they are truly one of my favorites. Also you have to get use to them they are a little messy and drop dead small foliage here and there so I get use to my fern glitter but my fern is ridiculously big lol and I am sooo proud of her and her other sisters haha

I don’t know why but my ferns do great and I have them in my livingroom… I do have the big 5L humidifier but it hasn’t been on in a good 10 months. So I don’t think that’s what’s making a difference. Both I bought as tiny/baby plants and one in currently in a 5inch pot (maiden hair one) the other I recently moved is in a 9inch pot (no clue what it is). The bigger one often has yellowing leaves but it keeps growing somehow and never looks like it’s actually in a bad way?? It’s like a small bush ball now. The other one sheds kinda also with under watering. Big one was in bright indirect light and now higher and a little darker, the 5inch one was in darker indirect light and is now in bright indirect light not far from a south window actually lmao. I live in Belgium, Europe. That’s all the info I have to give lol, I will now continue watching the video 🫶🏼

I think the phrase "The easiest plant" depends completely on the state or country a person lives in. Weather conditions / humidity / pests in your area uniquely plays on what can thrive indoors by you. I do not think a person should have to invest crazy amounts of money in order to keep a species alive only for it to only produce 2 leaves and one is always n the stage of melting lol. Join a local plant group to your area /town and just observe what is thriving for them first to save yourself some time / money / disappointments.
