Ok, after watching Scott's videos for years, this one really hit the right way. I've been playing bass since about '95 - mostly self-taught. This video was the clearest representation of creating walking bass lines I have ever seen. If this is what we should expect in the courses, I am sold. I signed up for the jazz accelerator this morning. I'll report back my impressions after I complete the 15-week series.

Walking bass is good stuff in so many ways. It keeps the bass in the background support spot where it needs to be for modern band lineups to make sense, but is more interesting and expressive to play than many other standard support lines, and caters to small flourishes tremendously well.

this is very advanced. not easy. I love it, but not for a beginner. If you find yourself saying things like "flat third" and "chromatic bass below your target" you are far beyond "easiest". Autumn Leaves (Clapton version) is the first song I learned to play on bass - 20 years as a guitarist).

I remember having to learn that kind of stuff in high school while playing in the jazz band (I was the sole guitarist/bassist in the band), I still remember struggling with the notes at first but the “chord tone, chord tone, chord tone, passing note” is a really great way to think about walking bass lines in general
@VeitLehmann
@VeitLehmann 2 года назад
I never thought about it that way, but it's what I do instinctively! You can even spice it up a little more by not targeting the root with the passing note, but maybe the 3rd or 5th. And, of course, you can also walk in steps, especially works well with Autumn Leaves. But that passing note before a chord change, that's something that I'll almost always find myself using.
@devinebass
@devinebass 2 года назад
YES... works GREAT on Autumn Leaves!
@Anteksanteri
@Anteksanteri 2 года назад
Elliott Smith does this on a lot of his guitar playing. Angeles is a decent example. Another common thing you can repeat on both guitar and bass is "root | oct | fift | passpass" where each bar sign "|" signifies a beat. It's just a way of making a very very common root fift bassline a little bit more interesting and that end specifically is reached instinctively by all of the best fingerstyle guitarists even if they don't know any theory.

@brettmarlar4154
@brettmarlar4154 2 года назад
This might be a bit more advanced than the formula given here. But on the V7 chord, I would start on the G and move down a whole step/tone to F (7th), the E (6th but is also the 3rd of C which hints at what chord is next) to the D (5th) which resolves nicely to C or the I chord. Ray Brown did this a lot.

Tip taken from a different YT bass channel: If the next chord is major - use the chromatic passing note BELOW the chord. If the next target chord is minor - use the chromatic passing note ABOVE the chord. BOTH approaches work, but this sounds (to my ears) a little better in context.

@davidgiloliva6463
@davidgiloliva6463 2 года назад
It's a substitution. A7 is the 5th of D so it puts a motion to Dmin. For example, if you use G7, it will naturally go to C (major or minor). The same with any dominant 7th chord.

What about a non-chord note on beat 2 and things like 6ths or 7ths on beat 3? What about line clichees? This video is a stable way to start, but there are more things one can do. Also, I wonder if a chord switch on a weak beat "counts" as a strong or weak beat in terms of what notes to play on it. And how do rules change for chords longer than 4 beats or in 3/4 for example?
