Today I want to share my favorite Luts for Blackmagic and Sony Cameras. The Phantom Luts.
In my opinion it's the easiest way to color grade S-Log Footage, which can be quite tricky, if you don't know what you are doing.
I know people are always debating wether or not it's good to use Luts in the first place, but I truly believe in Joels work and the quality of his Luts.

This is honestly some of the best work on an ax000 I've ever seen. I've had a6300 for a long time but I've never gotten this clean a film look. Your exposure is always on point. Please do a video on how you do your phantom luts!!

Cannot live without these LUTs ever since I bought them! Really great for shortening workflows during post. I also found them really useful for previewing my log footage on set for clients to see!

The only slog2/3 lut that works. Love these! I wish Joe Famularo will develop more stylized looks while retaining the same gentle highlight roll off formula. These phantom luts are truly amazing

Man, this video is just exactly what I was looking for! I also shoot on the A6400 and now A7C (full frame). I haven't had good luck with slog2 in the past so I have stuck to Cine4 the last 3 years, can you share some tips on how you white balance and color grade to get the look you want with these LUTs? I bought them recently and have tried them once but didn't get exactly what I was looking for, but I plan to try them again.

you've probably figured out by now, but 8 bit color really holds you back with the amount of grading, etc. you can do. I have the a7c (after having the zve10), and there's just only so much you can do. finally picked up an fx30! 10 bit is pretty noticeable how much better you can make things. especially if you're a hobbyist/enthusiast/HUGE AMATEUR like myself! defintely recommend picking one up.

Hey it’s an older video but the images you have look amazing. May I ask, would this look the same if you used an FX30 and baked in the LUT in camera and didn’t grade in post?

I have a FX30 now as well and use the same LUTs to monitor the slog footage while shooting. I mean you can always bake them in directly to avoid grading or to safe time and get pretty close. But I still prefer to not bake it in, to get the most out of it. Plus I enjoy grading, so there is that.

Thank you for the video. Quick question. When using SLOG3 and Phantom Luts do I need to convert the footage to Rec 709 first and then drop a phantom LUT on or can I just slap one directly onto the SLOG3 footage? Thank you I shoot on Sony A7IV and use Divinci Resolve 18

No extra steps needed. You can just apply the Lut onto your Slog 3 footage. It's really covenient.

@@Janio. thank you for the response. So I have cinematch as well. Can I use the Phantom LUTs after I use cinematch to Target a specific cameras REC 709. Or should I just use 1 or the other since the Phantom LUTs apply the 709 as well

@@KXNGiLLuSioN can't give you an answer on that one unfortunately, as I don't know anything about cinematch. Gotta test it yourself or contact the creator of the Phantom Luts: "joel famularo" for more specific questions. Glad that I could help :)

To shoot a-log2 the minimum iso is 800 so you will have to use ND filter for most indoor settings. Is that right?

Hi janio, when I apply phantom luts on my fx30 it looks good but when I use it on my portkeys monitor it looks dark, what should I do? Could you please help me with it? That would be highly appreciated.

Would anyone know if these LUTs work well applied to a Cinema DNG file, converted from ProResRaw on to my Ninja V from Sony A7s3 S-log footage? Could I apply same workflow, but using the camera raw sliders to make adjustments?

How come your a6400 footage looks better with this LUT than mine? What pack did you bought, a7s3 or legacy pack? I asked Joel what pack should I buy for my a6400 and he said the Legacy one, but it looks really different. For example I used the Jamaica LUT, yours is clean but mine the shadow is too much greeny. Please reply ASAP

Thanks. Do you need to convert from log to rec 709 first, then apply joel’s lut, or do you just apply the lut directly to the log?

No need to convert it to rec 709. You just apply it directly on your S-log footage.

I find these LUTs work best when filming in natural looking enviroments that don't have too much contrast, but there certainly are issues with the saturation of blues and greens, sometimes the LUT boosts these through the roof and makes them look very unnatural

If you have enough light and expose correctly, the A6400 truly is an amazing camera. No special settings, it's just picture profile 7 / Slog 2.

Yes, also works for the A6000.

LUTs are smart, but not with built in rec709 conversion I thinl, like these. I have them and never use them because the grade is too strong and you can mix itnin because you mix in the rec709 conversion as well (or mix it out if you go for say 50% intensity). I can however recommend the neutral LUT in the pack if you don't own Davinci Resolve and are a total beginner in grading with no time to spare.
