The EASIEST way to start your fursuit head! | Bucket head base tutorial

I just bought tickets to a con for my 10yo, and they've just informed me that they don't want a "costume" style they want a fur suit and I panicked. I never really considered myself a furry in the past. I liked the idea of anthro characters and enjoy the art online, but I never had any real desire to make an OC or go to a con. I went to Comic Con last weekend to meet a friend irl for the first time ever, and he introduced me to a bunch of lovely people who happen to own fursuits. I was absolutely enthralled! I made fast friends with a few of them and they invited me to stay with them at their hotel, and join them for the third day of comic con, and even paid for my ticket because I could not afford it! I spent the first day being their Handler, and they decided not to wear their suits on the third day (they had full suits so it was really hot) but one of them was kind enough to let me wear her suit around for the day! that one weekend has made me absolutely obsessed with fursuits and conventions and stuff. I had SO MUCH FUN! I am actively looking into building my own suit because I certainly cannot afford to commission one, and your videos are AMAZING at assisting me in my endeavor. I have to learn all of this from scratch because I have zero experience or knowledge of tailoring, sewing, etc. I even made a fursona to showcase my newfound desire to express my feelings. Furries are amazing and I love you! thank you for being so unapolagetically wholesome. I will try to finish my head and handpaws so I can go with my new friends to MCFC in a few months. it will be my first furcon and I am so excited to finally join the rapidly expanding ranks of the furry fandom.

I'm so glad you're still helping new makers get started on the journey. I've used this method for years for several suits and don't have any intentions of changing it :P

I followed your old tutorial and used 1" foam for my first base back in 2021 and I think it still turned out great. Imma still improve from then by using denser foam and NOT stacking the muzzle horizontally 😅

I do have a question: Which other methods are there besides the bucket head? Like for Kemono/other kinds of fursuits ect?

Don’t have thin foam… time to cut my foam down aggressively 💀💀 Not making a fursuit, but this is very useful for the cosplay I AM making. (It’s very similar though! It’s a stylized cosplay of poob/party noob from regretevator.)

Fun fact, (I learned this while messing with EVA foam and hot glue) apparently sweat makes it so that you can wipe it off easier, and it won't stick. Of course, be careful, and don't do this - I just happen to do this while getting into the flow of work. It also works if you're quick enough on wiping off the hot glue that's just been put down, but, again, don't do this.

Is the bucket head suppose to be tight on the ears? I tried to make my own bucket head base and it felt so tight on my ears as I have it on. As I put it on, it bends my ears. Another issue I have is, my entire furry head sits on my shoulders. The solutions I tried is, add layers to the top to bring it up and made it wider. The biggest problem is, i can't have it move along with my head.

On the mannequin head thing. Lincraft, $20(ish) Foam Mannequin heads, usually sold for wig styling. If you grab one with a noticeable deformity, they may even knock a dollar or 2 off the price at the register (do not attempt to damage one for a discount though, they are watching you at all times for that.)

I tried to write down the instructions for this, I tried my best but it’s not a very good explanation 😅 • grab foam • measure circumference of head (around) • add 1 inch to circumference • mark circumference length onto foam • measure from mid forehead to a bit past chin • create rectangle according to height and length of head • split measurement of head in half • mark middle of head according to the split amount • measure top of head to mid forehead, double amount • mark size in a rectangle on corner of foam, mark two lines in center and two on the sides • split size of middle of head in half • mark this next to other small rectangle twice • mark a line four inches from bottom and circle from top of line to bottom of foam • cut out pieces • put big piece to bottom of chin and wrap around head • Mark where eyes, nose, mouth and bottom of chin are (poke urself) • connect the dots from nose to chin ( should be a curvy triangle) • circle eyes • cut out mouth/nose shape • take smaller pieces • attach small rectangle to midpoint of long rectangle (repeat with other small rectangle) • take end of the t and glue it to top of the base • glue ends of base together • glue other side of the t to top of the base • make sure loose ends of the t are correct length and will go flat against skull • glue both ends to base • if wanted fill in the empty spaces with foam -------------------

I made one out of Eva foam lol

this is a great method for bucket heads and all but my go to method is what I call the 'royal crown' method. I measure from the very top of my head to the chin for the vertical measurement, then glue the piece into a tube like normal, then take two sides of the top and bring them together, make a mark at the bend, and draw that mark all the way around to use that as a guide for the next step which is to make a zigzag pattern all the way around, with each angle touching either that line or the edge of the tube, to make a crown. I usually do it so there's only 7 or 8 triangles to glue together on top. this method makes a way smoother top of the head I've found.
