exactly. When i made my first set of paws i wrote L and R so i could differ them. Well long story short the backing of the fur was way to thin and it bled through the fur easily
I’m about to make my first head ! The furring is what scares me the most but I’ve been doing a lot of research to help , even tho I know the first will always be flawed. Def appreciate the videos
okay some notes from me! ive been making suits on and off for a decade soooo 1) when working with fur, look at sillhouette. sometimes i cant tell what the overall shape is, so i might take a photo and colour over it so i may be able to get an estimate of how itll look with fur. That ir sometimes ill tape the piece, as again, it stops it being sheets of foam to my brain. 2) take your time shaving, like seriously. i tend to go in with guards getting incrementally smaller, then no guard in places like the jaw, muzzle, eyebrows etc. brush the fur upwards and in the wrong direction, then carefully chip away with the clippers. this is hard and takes a lot of practice but makes a suit look so much more profesional. 3) pay attention to durability! a lot of newer makers forget this. make sure to tie off seams well, seal paint on eyes, sew raw edges around the mouth and so on. If the suit is built to last, it WILL last
Making paws as a commission and man so many mistakes it's torture but the final result is always worth it my last commission I accidentally sewed two front and back pieces together 😂😂 thankfully the buyer said it was fine as it didn't make too much of a difference
another thing i would add is hot gluing your seams. I did this with my first dinomask partial, went to refurbish it, and i had to fully remake everything because all the fur was ruined from the hot glue. If anyone watching this hot glues seams, i would recommend learning hand sewing or getting a sewing machine it will save you so much time if you decide to refurb your suit. Im working on a different dinomask partial right now and its turing out way better then my first suit
sewing is flat out a useful life skill, and opens a lot of doors in terms of being able to make and modify clothing to suit your wants and needs. And that practice with clothing/fur will loop back and help you with the other as well
Thirding this! I'm so proud of my foam head underneath a terrible foam job and I hot glued it all on, and I'm not light with glue. I have to remake it all, but I'm trying to see it as a fresh start.
Going back and double checking has been such an issue for my first suit. I've redone the eyes three times to ensure they fit and I like the design, 100% always double check your work!❤
My first head I started in 2016, I only had really thick foam and ended up cutting sheets in half to get the right thickness- I came back to years later and it was unfinished so I decided to make another after getting the right foam and it's going great
Yea im making my first dinomask fursuit and i have messed up a bit but i find ways for a solution When i was trying to make the ears, i accidently glued the foam to the wrong side of the other piece but i just tore it off, peeled some excess glue off and then fixed it
If I were starting fresh for the first time, I think I would make the foot paws first. They are the furthest from our eyes, so imperfections are as obvious. You practice carving foam, making pattern pieces from foam, patterning curves, and it's less intense than the head. Then you can take all those skills to the paws or head and it will be less daunting
i wanna get into making but it seems really hard haha. great video man i def subbed. wanna talk to you in the future if i ever start dipping my toes into fursuit making
Quick note on sharpies-- the red barrel Milwaukee "sharpies" are the best!!! They have miles more ink, write on more types of surfaces, and stay sharp longer (if you're gentle). Ill never go back!
To all the people commenting hate, your just going to end up with more furry content on your page and your helping this video get more attention, if you don't like it, don't click on the video
a big tip I got from a cosplay maker who works with E.V.A foam: you can actually sharpen those box cutter blades with a whetstone or even sandpaper, just a few swipes between cuts is enough to keep your sharp edge going for A LOT longer, helps you save up on extra blades and you won't have to throw as many of them out!
Been doing this since I've read your post. Just came back to thank ya XD. Not just for fursuits, but especially darn nice for signmaking stuff where I'm REALLY required to have a sharp point. Saved so many blades thus far!
I appreciate the fursuit making tips, but the thumbnail of this video was literally clickbait. Correct me if I'm wrong but not once did you mention anything about hot glue or anything related to what's going on in the thumbnail.
What I’m suffering with, is the design. I’m making mine after one of my pets, a bearded dragon. Having to cut out all the foam, and symmetrically.. They are almost just a plain triangle shape, if you look at them. I’m soon going to get started- wish me luck on that. 😅
@@WafflesDoesArt thank you for that, and the amazing video! I’m a huge beginner for now, until I’m more experienced it will only be doing the head. This will be my fifth attempt, first one was not as fursuit-y but I hope to become better! ✨
my BIGGEST problem when i was younger starting out was id rush it, and of couruse i was like 12 so duh i rushed it but honnestly my newer stuff isnt proffessional looking yet but honnestly its sm better now that i take my time and will sometimes take month long breaks if i dont feel like it looks right
you have to be really carefull while using a sharpie. When using on foam, it's better to cut off small pieces of foam where the sharpie was used because when you will wash your finished fursuit, it can transfer onto the fur. for example you will have black stains on white fur because of the sharpie. And if you wanna use sharpie on fur, then its better to use tailor's crayon or soft pencil or chalk marker
When I was making MY first fursuit head from quarter inch foam- (or smth idk) on the first day, it looked rlly ugly, and I thought. I might give up, but then when I was going to bed I was staring at it, and I got an idea, the idea worked and it looked amazing!
Another tip, don't use too hot of a Hot Glue Gun,the foam wouldn't glue together and it gives you blisters,i know from experience from using an industrial grade glue gun.
i have made 3 fursuit heads and i can say i have made almost all of these mistakes (and that's not even counting the other heads i restarted) double, even triple check your work if u have to bc making a mistake with fur is very costly, trust me i've done it enough times to know
I am making a fursuit right now im almost at the furring part what colors fur did you get because i am searching for those exact colors but cant find them anywhere. Really enjoyed the video :)
great videos! -Something i should do is get back into doing Tutorial video streams, or begin doing tutorial videos for my YT channel. After 16+ years building fursuits as a profession & income, maybe creating tutorials on various fursuit techniques is something i may look into doing while building current commissioned suits. (following your page too now.
I’m currently working on my own suit. It’s a Dino mask one but I’m making the ears out of foam and tails. I might ask my best friend for some help because they made their fursuit before me!
my mistake is starting to make fursuits when i have to focus most of my money to feeding myself and other things not into getting materials and tools :(
I think I accidentally used too much hot glue for my foam base and now it feels a bit stiff when I try it on, especially in the cheek sections. Is there a way to fix that or are fursuit heads supposed to feel stiff from glue?
Suit head bases should be very plush and squishy, they are usually extremely light and you can completely squish it without really feeling any glue. If it’s not flexible like this, then you definitely added too much. In the end it shouldn’t make too much of a difference in the final suit. If you line it it should still be comfortable. People use solid bases from 3D printing or resin, so it shouldn’t be a big deal
i have a question too, would it be dumb to make a fursuit at a young age ? while growing up it may end smol…so i wonder is i should continue making fursona and waiting for my growth to slow down a little…
Depends, But it never hurts to start developing skills. If you make a fursuit, and it no longer fits, you'd at least have experience that allow you to remake it in the future. So I say, go for it! -🦝
I’m also younger, and my body hasn’t fully developed yet, if I were you I wouldn’t put the time, money, and materials into a full-body fursuit, instead you can make a parcel, head, or even just paws, and or feet
Im 11 yo and im makibg my first fursuit! (Dw i have savant syndrom in art so im rlly gifted) Im buying a 3d base bc i live in the vatican and they do not have foam so urah
I started making suits at 10 so my suits are way better than people would expect only almost 2 years later! Don’t give up making suits and they’ll be amazing:33
