This process almost looks too easy, and you have never had a problem, WOW. Most people talk about welding cast iron like it only works 25% of the time. Look forward to trying this process!

manifolds tend to be burnt out, tough to weld from all the heat cycles. I had a few to fix over the years, always used acetylene torch, sometimes used hi nickel cast rod other times I used a fluxed brass rod and essentially brazed the joint, which proved quite durable. I always thought the torch method to be advantageous because you put a lot of heat into the entire area of weld, trick was to cool slowly.

Good job. Do the same process. Preheat to 400*F, (temp sick or digital laser thermometer) 1" welds, peen, cool slowly in molding sand or woolbestos insulation. Prefer removing flux from a nickel SMAW rod and TIG weld when possible. I have had very good success on dozens of cast items over the years.

This cast was very clean too. There was one spot with impurities But I focused my welds in and around that area until it welded nice. Should last a long time. You are 100 percent correct on your method and I actually prefer stick welding cast but I don’t have one readily available.

I've welded cast iron with mig, thoroughly cleaned, then heated whole job in the oven, welded up and buried it in sand and left untill stone cold, fettled up weld as necessary never had any problems, maybe just lucky but done it several times, mainly manifolds.
@WhiskeyDents

I’ve done basically the same thing numerous times and the welds have always held. All luck lol

Nice. I didn't think you could do this. The peening is to remove stress in the weld? Is there something special about flux core, or could you use mig? Thx!
@WhiskeyDents
@WhiskeyDents 3 месяца назад
Yes on the peening. It has something to do with the material the flux core is made of. Sorry I don’t have more into. I’ve mig welded cast too but it not as strong.

Pro's use Flux coated brass rods welded with a torch or a nickel rod like Ni55 or Ni99.

I’m using flux core but ideally you want wire with higher nickel content.

Your welding with a 110 volt welder or a 220 volt mig welder. Need to know because I have a lincoln weld pak 140 amp 110 volt mig welder.

Nice job… you made it look too easy… …did the same to my wife’s cars manifold… but I welded it on the car, also used a torch to heat it and ran the engine for a while to stop it cooling and snapping… lasted for 10 years and was still ok when I sold the car….🙂

Cast steel or cast iron? As far as I know exhaust manifolds are all cast steel . Medium carbon. Unlike high carbon cast iron . .yikes folks need to go back to the books.

That will not last long term without cracking. The filler needs to be nickel or silicone bronze. If it was this easy everyone would be using flux core . This video is a scam

Not true. I welded a part the manufacturer said was un-weldable. I did the same thing he did except with 7018. A good pre-heat with peening and a long cool down is key. I prefer 7014 for cast. My part was a track pad on a 100 ton crane and they sent me a new one so when my weld broke I would have a new one. The weld never broke and they couldn't find the broken pad when the rental ended. Nickel and bronze will crack less but is way weaker. Nickel rod is low penetration so they don't pull the cast together as much but the whole weld will pop out under stress. Welding cast is about the process not the material. Flux core is fine.
