The Eastern Tiger Salamander: Everything You Need To Know!

On a nocturnal adventure during a winter rainstorm, we encounter the largest terrestrial salamander in North Carolina: the Eastern tiger salamander!
When looking for amphibians, it's always important to be respectful of the sensitive microhabitats where they dwell! If you are flipping logs, rocks, or really anything that a critter might be using as a home (which is basically anything), please please please put them back exactly as you found them. It might not seem like a big deal, but for these little gummy lizards a slight temperature or humidity difference can mean life or death, so do your part to help salamanders out!

If you've made it this far in the description, remember to be safe when creature adventuring! Most wild animals can cause injury if harassed, and I do not recommend attempting to capture any creatures without purpose and practice. The reason that I interact with wildlife is to produce these educational videos, and I have years of zoology experience under my belt. Also, I always ask permission from a land owner before exploring on their property, and you should do the same.
Keep adventuring everywhere, and keep your adventures safe at all times!
-Ben Zino

As a kid I found a mole salamander (Ambystoma talpoideum) underneath cover during the dead of winter, he was so cute and I think ever since then I’ve been obsessed with salamanders!! I wanna be able to find more species but atm I really only see two lined salamanders, slimy salamanders, and marbled salamanders… hopefully I can find this one someday, absolutely gorgeous and chonky!! Love the video, thank you :)

I haven't seen talpoideum yet, but they are definitely next on my list of Ambystomatids! Two lined manders are awesome, I love the color variation in that species. Thanks so much for the support!

0:40 You're messing with us, this is just an excuse to get dirty. Another knowledge-filled video. Sad to hear about the removal of protection on those wetlands. Back in CO, we'd find them hanging out in prairie dog burrows. It would rain (or snow in the spring), and they would come to the top looking for worms.

Darn, you caught me! Yeah the new wetland regulations are pretty useless from an amphibian perspective, hopefully they'll get updated again soon. Crazy that y'all have the Westerns in prairie dog burrows, I would love to see a rattler and a tiger salamander sharing a hole!

Very cool Ben. I found my lifer crossing the road early this year then I was lucky enough to find a breeding pond a couple weeks ago. I became kinda obsessed with these guys when i started looking for them lol. I'm in NC as well.

We used to find tiger salamanders growing up in MN in the basement window wells all the time. They were all over the place. I unfortunately haven’t seen one since(about 40 years)
@TheWildReportOfficial
@TheWildReportOfficial 5 месяцев назад
That's awesome! They have definitely disappeared from many areas where they were previously abundant thanks to human destruction of sensitive habitats.

Great job finding a Tiger in NC. I have yet to see one here, but I sure hope to. It looks like there is only one pocket in the state in which they are typically found.

Eastern tiger salamanders have to be one of the coolest salamander species in the US to me, and you got a really nice one! I’ve only seen them in Ohio, but now I’m dying to turn one up in PA or NJ. I liked the inclusions in this video, you have a nice modern take on adventure style content and it makes the segments feel purposeful, and your information is great as always. Good stuff!

Thanks so much for the kind words, I really appreciate the support! You might still have a shot at finding them this year in PA or NJ, I think we are due for at least one or two more warm rains before the season ends.

Another great video, although I was saddened to hear about the federal government removing wetland protections. Keep fighting the good fight, and making these wonderful videos. As the tiger salamander says, goodbye, strange human.

It's definitely pretty dour news, but there are also so many amazing people and organizations fighting for wetland conservation out there in the world so there is still hope!

Great salamander packed video! I have yet to see one in the wild, don't want to flip logs in public parks. Question; was it also a full moon night when they came out? Your next mystery specie is .... a mustache.
@TheWildReportOfficial
@TheWildReportOfficial 5 месяцев назад
Thank you! Yeah I try to avoid flipping anything when there's people around just in case they don't know how to properly handle animals and/or put cover objects back in place. And I'm not sure what the moon phase was unfortunately, I think waxing gibbous but still not full.

I love your passion for salamanders, still, I think all herpethologists or naturalists posting videos online should avoid barehand manipulation of amphibians in order to protect them from chytridic fungus which we can transmit to them. I loved the video otherwise. Please, let's spread the voice! More videos of salamanders without barehand manipulation!
