I didn't expect you to come back with a video like this. I strongly approve what your intentions are for the next videos and if they're not too technical and complicated I'll watch them for sure, because I'm a similar situation. The difference is that I've been only starting for a little while to try to pick up speed, at the moment I'm at 90 bpms downpicking and 140-150 alternate picking (I know it's slow but I'm just starting out). Hopefully your videos will apply to my needs as well!

@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS Hey man! I'm not worried about Karri, rather about me sometimes not being up to some of the "instructional" videos I watch. It happened with a lot of videos (say Rick Beato, but I could go on for a while...) that I lacked the essential tools or the knowledge to properly understand what the creator was talking about. Sometimes the title was a bit on the clickbait-y side but hey, if you type "how to warm up on guitar" and then you're starting to play patterns and repetitions that sound like they come from a jazz course, well how do you expect my simple metalhead brain to compute all of that? Long story short: I'm a little slower in terms of speed compared to the guys Karri has mentioned in the video, but I trust him. After all there are almost none of videos like he intends to make in the future.

@@Cthulhu_Awaken Abso-MuthaFuggin'-LUTELY!! Just start by playing For Whom the Bell Tolls repeatedly as much as you can several times a day in small bites! When it's good, pick the next harder or song you think is just beyond ur reach, etc... don't worry so much about theory yet, Rick blows ALL our minds unless ur college degree music nerd! The theory is much easier to understand with the more songs you learn to play you'll recognize the patterns, then someone tells you a TINY bit of the theory and SOME will "click" each time. Guitar is a balance of 3 things, Ear, Technique, Theory. Like a race car need to balance Speed, Braking , Traction to not crash & stay on the track, every driver will have different levels of each and the goal in the long game is just to get to the "end"! None of us has the same Ear, Technique or Theory but we just pick up little bits of all 3 along the way and play what you can with what you got I hope! {;o)
@Cthulhu_Awaken
@Cthulhu_Awaken 2 года назад
@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS I do have some knowledge of theory, of course it's incomplete and I've learned to avoid videos too complicated for me. But that's not the point. When talking about techniques there's still some I can't manage yet or I don't get and some videos having the title hinting at something accessible also for me, they turn out to be not instead. The example I've made was about patterns of a scale that to me sounded the farthest I've ever heard from a warmup. You just can't have that kind of title and then do that in your video. You're just being a careless clickbait-y swindler. I really wonder what an unsophisticated beginner thinks when stumbling upon that stuff thinking they are watching some sort of tutorials... Anyway as for me, I'm already beginning with the Black Album, I consider it being the ultimate compromise between Metallica's furious thrash attitude and the Loads' spontaneity. I'll think about your advice after being done with it (now that I think of it, TBA features some pretty fast songs like Holier, Never and Struggle). Thank you for your kind words!

Whoa Karri, awesome to see you, MAN you even starting to look like a professor!! I agree with with ur perspective on this approach and realizing how negative "group think" mentalities can have an impact on the community. We only need to look at examples like the mighty Jeff Hanneman vs. Marty Friedman vs. JAmes Hetfield to look upon and wonder in amazement how they seem to be completely "wrong" and look weird or it shouldn't work but they absolutely DO IT to IT!! The key is that they practiced everyday to some kind of regime and took breaks until their hands or fingers only hurt a little less, then practiced and jammed together some more. Always try to play that next song that just barely too fast and repeat it till it's EASY, like ur title says! You ROCK Karri bro, I remember ur mom bringing you noodles and birthday guitar cake and kids playing learning games and just glad to see you. */w\TMFR/w\*

I just felt that I should add a rare comment (for me) after watching THIS video - I'm someone who watches a TON of YT videos across dozens and dozens of various genres outside of music and guitar, and I subscribe to less than 10 channels. Watching this video got me to subscribe(!) I like and really appreciate your honestly and "realness' and look forward to getting past watching your impressive playing (which, as you know, it's quite easy for anyone to find and watch 100s of YT video of very impressive guitar playing), but also to see some actual content that might actually inspire me directly to improve my own personal playing. Anyway, you've impressed me beyond the "normal" stuff and I thought I could, at the very least, let you know that you are on the right track here with where this video is headed. Well, to me, I mean, ...can't and won't speak for all the others of course :) Rock on good sir! \m/ \m/

Hello Karri i really enjoying your bandpicks for the riff-videos you are doing got some great stuff there. I have been playing guitar for quite some while now and i started out with no teacher, never had one and probably never will... This caused me to use alot of tension trying to build speed and my hand would cramp and ache alot during my playing and i was focusing more on the classical guitar in which i had problems with tremor whilst plying cause id also tense up there, not very long ago i had a mental breakdown in which i quit my job and left my girlfriend so now i had a lot of sparetime. So i was thinking to my self now i can sit down and play like 4-6 hours a day and i will aproach the most relaxed picking techniques and start of slow and slowly build up speed and accuracy with both left and right hand, i honestly thought i perma-damaged my hand causing tendonitis so bad it was irreversable but after a few months going in with a different mindset and appreciating the sparetime and a calm mind and just focusing of getting it to the best i can... I can really say that i habe improved alot now i am able to play pretty fast (holy wars) some fast Death songs and still feeling relaxed and not totaally exhausted after a couple of minutes, this has really made me enjoy practicing guitar a whole lot theese days im as iam typing done with the whole cemetary gates solo and feel like im near to be able to do tornado of souls aswell (been an enemy of mine for years that one 😆) What i wanted to say is i think its quite cool that one can take such an different aproach and due to a different mindset get in and work and correct so many longterm errors thats been dragging the progress down and in just a couple of months get on the right track and find out what works for me. Sorry bout the novel just wanted to type a little about my story in brutal misconception with hypertension. Anyways love you videos and i would love to se som uncle slam - riffs on your channel thats of course if i dont do em my self 👍😎🤘 have a great day my Finnish neigbour. Cheers from Sweden.

I think what you're trying to say is that it's like a left foot right foot when walking kind of thing - left foot being playing/execution and right foot being technique. If you focus only on 1 aspect, you're limping.

I'm stuck on Creeping Death at about 190 and have been...for months. Talking with a coworker about this (he can play it through at album tempo) he says "just practice." One thing I have noted though is that Kirk can't keep up with James after all these years. He's put in the string time...on stage an off. The question I have: why?
@Theosis78
@Theosis78 2 года назад
Thank you, Karri, for this relieving first hand insight. I just recently discovered that the focus should lie on a fast motion that feels like it can be repeated into infinity, regardless of "tension". Also a "colleague" of yours here in YT also helped by emphasizing on picking mechanics based on wrist rotation (which doesn't look like that). But he also talked about holding the pick in a relaxed manner. I was happy to get much better results from this wrist motion while at the same time was hesitant to speed up because of increasing pick holding tension. But now we know: Don't be ashamed of tension! 😅 Would you agree with my idea of focusing on cyclicality and not relaxedness? Thank you very much for your insights!
@KarriHanninen
@KarriHanninen 2 года назад
Exactly. Tension (too little or too much) is bad when you lose control because of it.

Yeah, I never really understood when people placed such an emphasis on being relaxed. For me personally, its about finding the spot between relaxed and tension. Also, guitar string tension and the types of picks you are using is of paramount importance. Speed burst training works for me personally.

I don’t know if I’ve been doing that without knowing. I sometimes just sit there and really dig into a tough riff maybe play it a little fast without knowing then repeat after a break. I get tired but I guess it’s like working out, getting stronger and fitter in a way.
@aethereal9032
@aethereal9032 9 месяцев назад
Also it's simply impossible or ultra hard to be completely relaxed when tremelo picking fast for example. You cannot tell me that you are able to play songs from bands like Intestine Baalism or Portal with your wrist completely relaxed
@Guitarist19887
@Guitarist19887 9 месяцев назад
@@aethereal9032 the best right handed guys I’ve seen play on live sets definitely not relaxed like you said. I’m discovering it’s a balance of tension and stamina the more I get better. All my videos I look a bit tense I cannot completely relax that would be inhuman for me 😂
@aethereal9032
@aethereal9032 9 месяцев назад
@@Guitarist19887yes. I know this gym example is used a lot but Imagine someone asking "how can I lift heavy weights" and someone says "bro just be relaxed". You can train your hand/wrist/arm to get used to playing at fast speeds but a bit of tension will always be there and that's normal and okay. Problem is when you can't control it.

There's so much brain-dead stupid shit that refuses to die, like "Don't cut all your strings at once, or you'll hurt the guitar neck!" or "You need a thick pick to play fast!" Drives me crazy.
