I came up with something very similar recently because I wanted to taper some legs. I ended up making two sets of adjustable blocks of different thicknesses to accommodate thicker and thinner materials. Of course, if your toggle clamps adjust more than mine do, you may not need more than one set.

I’m wondering if it could be build with a runner and without the 1” piece to accommodate longer boards? It doesn’t seem like it would work for cutting pieces longer than 12” or so, depending on the angle? It’s a really amazing design though! Someone could use it to make a “quilt” out of wood!

I really like this. I plan to make one. One mod I’ll likely make is to put a runner on the bottom. That way I can run it without the fence and allow longer stock for the other cuts. Is this a good or bad idea? Any dangers I’m not considering? Edit… I realized the drawback of my idea. It limits the width of stock that can be jointed with the jig. Guess it would be a trade off.
@wizard2319

What is a "runner"? I might know but not sure.
@bobby-c7731
@bobby-c7731 11 месяцев назад
@@wizard2319 a strip that goes in the miter slot, like would be on a cross cut sled. Maybe I used the wrong word. It is the width of the miter slot and attaches below the jig to allow the jig to run in the slot with no fence.
@roynielsen1911
@roynielsen1911 11 месяцев назад
I'm thinking the same thing. Also without the lip, which would allow for much longer stock when cross cutting.

I went to your link and bought the clamps. This looks pretty easy to build, but thought I would support the effort you put into this, so I bought the plans. This is a great idea. I have a piece that I want to make a weather station but need to straighten three edges. This looks really versatile.

Great design and video, Matthew! Simple and effective. By some cosmic coincidence, I recently bought 4 of those clamps with only a vague thought of using them with a sled. I’m curious about advantages or disadvantages of using the miter bar slot instead of the fence. Obvious disadvantage is a few extra steps to make. Advantage seems to be not having to focus on keeping the sled against the fence in use. Thanks as always for what you do here!!!
@richardb.4487
@richardb.4487 5 месяцев назад
This is old, I know- and you've probably figured it out by now. But with the slot, you're locked into one specific distance from the blade. Using the fence, you're only limited by the capacity your fence allows, so you can do the edges on much larger (or smaller boards).

Matt, I built one of these this past weekend and used it to put a straight edge on a bunch of oak slats from pallets. I have one suggestion for this jig. I used pine as my board for the clamps and noticed that after a few clamps, the board started to crack at the point where the clamps mount and the edge. I switched to a piece of oak 3/4 in blocks, correcting the problem. Thank you for all your great videos and ideas. Sometimes I go into vapor lock trying to come up with ideas, but you spur me along with your great teaching and explanations. Keep um coming.
@KA-qw5cv

I like this jig. It seems like one could use a thicker 3" X 8" block, with longer bolts, & attach clamps to it for securing thicker pieces of lumber. Just switch to the block thickness needed. When i bought the clamps off the jungle store, they were relatively inexpensive, so making the extra blocks should be cost effective considering the overall savings of using this jig vs a jointer, for instance. I think harbor freight sells the clamps now too.

@BlessedLaymanNC

I hate to complicate what might be the best simple table saw sled I've seen yet, but here goes... I would start by adding a miter-slot guide and removing the fence that runs next to your fence. This removes the length limitation of your cross-cuts and miter boards. Then, I would duplicate it for the other side of the blade. Without the attachments, the second board gives a zero clearance and support for the other side of the blade when needed or desired. The slots on the second sled also give you the option of working from either side of the blade. To get the 90 degree cut accurate, align one edge of a carpenter square to the kerf edge of the sled and the fence to the other edge of the square. (If that is not accurate enough, why are you using that square to measure square of your projects?) If you want to complicate your clamp attachments for thicker boards, you can cut a thin board the same size as the clamp boards with a U cut out of one side that will allow it to slide under the clamp board. This will allow you to raise the board for thicker boards. Obviously, this is a luxury option only. Some wood workers like luxury. I use a Hitachi (now Metabo) job site saw. I was in a hurry to build my project so I built a temporary single-sided sled, which I still use today, years later. I built the other sled, which is just a board with a runner under it, when I wanted more support for the piece I was cutting and for cutting thin strips. My favorite thing about the split sled is that I can use it with the blade guard on. I have to lift the right side on the rare occasion that it interferes with the cut off.
@BlessedLaymanNC
@BlessedLaymanNC 3 месяца назад
A few days after my comment above, I made the same thing with dovetail slots for the Matchfit 360 system. I use the matchfit clamps right now, but my next move will be to add the boards with the clamps like you have on top. Anchored down they will provide repeat cuts, which I can't do with just the tall clamps. They slide too much. Another use for the sled is to make what I call "bricks" You can set one of your clamps up perpendicular to the blade with a stop block, say 6 inches. Then set a parallel clamp to 3 inches. Cut one piece in the 6 inch cross cut clamps, then when you are done, put that piece in the 3 inch rip cut clamps while adding a second piece in the cross cut clamps. NOw, instead of two 45 cuts, you are cutting one board to length and the other to width at the same time. Keep doing that and you cut in 1/2 the number of cuts to make your 3 x 6 bricks. My sled is a little larger in both directions than yours, especially in the length. It's just long enough to joint the most common length of boards I need to joint, and I had the added benefit of not having to cut the sled down to size, just to width to get a straight edge. Great project. Thank you.

I just made one, and I don't have a plunge router. Just clamp a thicker board (like a 2x4), instead of the speed square for a guide. Then start the router, and gently guide it down to start about an inch in from the end of the slot, sliding it down the board. Once it's flat, you can go slowly to the edge you want, then back across the full length.

What size are the screws? Can a melamine board be used for wood and do you have an issue where the screws lock down breaking down the board with repeated use.

Melamine wouldn't hold the screws well enough, but you could use it for the 1" piece. I used #8 x 1/2 screws, because I used 1/2" plywood rather than 3/4. If you use 3/4" plywood, use #8 x 3/4" screws.

Awesome work. My old jig just broke and the knobs i had on it were nylon lock which sucks..Good deal I'll be making this, this weekend.

I made it and it has been a game changer for me, and feels a lot safer than other methods I've used to get angles. One little tweak to take this to the next level I did was to also router the same grooves/channel on each top piece. It allows for a lot more flexibility.

Once again great build! Matthew, I want to build a concealed for for a closet in my house. I need the face to be sheetrock and want it to be like a hat hanging wall. Anyway you possibly give so ideas or do a video on building one?

I really like the double stop/clamps idea. Less sure about using the fence as the guide instead of a miter bar because that so limits the usable length of stock. Great idea though!

@@MatthewPeechWoodworking after thinking about it, I am going to try a series of holes with a forstner bit and drill press, and see if I can chisel out the rest. Does not have to be perfect, just do the job
