The Easy Way to Make A Live Edge Table

I have made a few live edge tables, and this is the easiest way I have found to shape and finish a live edge table top with pre-fabricated steel table legs. This DIY live edge table only took me a few hours to build I and I only needed 4 of my Ryobi power tools to build. The legs are from Semi Exact which is manufacturing steel furniture parts right here in America!
I have invested in Semi Exact and we are going to be rolling a bunch of new products that will make DIY projects a lot easier!
semiexact.com/
For beginners taking on their first live edge projects I suggest starting with a softwood slab like cedar. They are easier to work with and less expensive than hardwood slabs. I get my slabs from: www.woodslabs....

A nice short video. Thank you. I made my table almost the same way. I used a PU coating and made heavy wooden cross legs.

That grinder with the holy galahad disc is a powerful tool. It’s also super dangerous. That is not a good tool for a beginner. You need to know what you are doing with those and even then they can surprise you and not in a good way.

Exactly. It should be held for dear life because if it decides to jump and it will at one point or another, you don't want it hurling at you.

If you skip the flattening part, of course it's "the easy way". The most time consuming part is flattening the top.

Also failed to finish the bottom side or reinforce the big split. Not guaranteed, but this could turn into a multi piece pretzel after a while.

@@vbaspcppguy I dont think a slab that thick will ever turn into a pringle and even if it does the trend of using slabs will be gone by then... and the dyier will probably not care since they didnt spent a fortune.

So is the oil finish enough to protect the wood from indoor humidity or someone spilling drinks on it? I always thought soft woods needed a heavy coat of polyurethane. Forgive my ignorance I'm a beginner

Very cool!! I have made lots of slab furniture in the past and could have used a company like this!! One thing I would suggest from being in the industry is that they offer some sort of cross member that can be bolted between the two legs for racking strength. Not sure aesthetically how you would do this though.

We just built a similar one from live edge oak planks...sanding those edges was not fun! But for a dining room table, I'd rather spent more time working on it, than using a softer wood. Always depends, on what you're going to use it for, obviously.

How much do they charge for a 3” thick piece of cedar, 4ft long? I went to the site but all I’m seeing is very expensive pieces. Is there a length of slab like this around $200? What wood is inexpensive?
@Nathan-jw1qn
@Nathan-jw1qn 3 года назад
I've picked up a few pieces of cedar this size for $80-200, each about 2ft wide. Specialty lumber suppliers would've charged twice as much, but I've had great luck buying from wholesalers and local guys who cut and dry slabs out in the country. Check local buy and sell sites like kijiji/craigslist.

Im curious why not use a wet cloth to remove the dust? So what kind table is this? Is it use for dining? Or only office?
@paulhardin7657
@paulhardin7657 Год назад
A wet cloth raises the grain of the wood, which you'd have to sand off again before finishing. The tack cloth has a slightly sticky surface that picks up the dust without raising the grain.

As a professional carpenter, this made me cringe the entire way through. But I have to say, it’s come out really nicely!! Worth noting with a softwood especially with a light finish it can have a tendency to warp over time…. Having said that, it won’t be that flat to start with so I’m not sure how much it matters!

Be careful with the Simple Finish.....if you don't give it adequate time to soak into the wood (24-48 hours) even after you wipe it off it can ruin table runners or any other "cloth" covers.

The whole purpose of "live edge", is well, having a live edge bark and all. By you taking it off, I feel you loose the whole visual appeal and effect of having a live edge - it's not live edge anymore, in my opinion.
