The sound you are talking about is called "shimmer". The rest of the sound's that were used were a little bit if delay and reverb. But shimmer is a very unique effect. The rackmounted unit that create's the shimmer sound is an Evidente Eclipse H3000 Harmonizer.
It's the shimmer effect, Edge and Brian Eno crafted in the studio for the Unforgettable Fire. It's pretty much a heavy reverb that's modulated a couple octaves to make it sound like swelling strings. I wish I could explain this better, but if you google U2 Edge Shimmer you'll find explanations better than mine.
a MIDI pickup (usually right next to the bridge) that is linked to a synthesizer and which can be blended with the natural sound of the guitar. Roland makes the most popular MIDI pickup that I know of.
wow...after watching this vid not only do i realize edge is a smart guy but so is his tech Dallas...i think he hit the nail right on the head in the middle of the vid about describing how edge is influenced and how is approach to playing is....very very insiteful vid... where did you get this from anyway?... thanks so much for posting! -mE!
crystal echoes kind of thing, I believe! that effect sounds extra sweet on baritone, as can sound a trifle sharp on electric. hope your listening mr edge sir. I jest
@rexy5 Having Aspergers myself, I'd say it's possible Dallas has it, but it must be a reasonably mild case. I know I'd find a lot of what he does hard to cope with, but conversely - People with Aspergers are VERY good at focusing on the job in hand, and that may make it much easier to not be affected by the huge audience and other factors. Gary Numan, another great technical/musical master has Aspergers btw. Chris.
How did he get that sounds whilst dallas was playing there was another noise that accompanied the guitar! Like a keyboard or something! Do you know what that was??
To say that Edge is not influenced by any guitarists is a little hard to swallow. Dallas then goes on to talk about a conglomerate of guitarists like Hendrix and page, whom he used to form his own style. He's contradicting himself surely? I'm a huge fan of Edge and his use of effects does set him apart from many guitarists, but I would say that he like all others is influenced to a degree by other guitarists. I can't really think of anyone whom is completely original.
boy, there could be interesting infos in this video. but the filming is a piece of crap. why zooming close to some details just to pan shortly before the cam has adjusted its focus? only to film the rest against a lightsource? and them mash it through the digital upload shredder. sometimes youtube sucks so much. i need to login an yell.
