Strangely enough, I never seem to be interested in the paid for content no matter which of my interests is concerned. Yours is my go to account for new patterns. There is none other, but this cozy sunday video is all I love and need.

This seems to be your shop window, as entertaining as you are, and no one would pay to enter a shop, especially when paying already to RU-vid for premium. But perhaps devotees of indie patterns might pay for exclusive videos features like capsule wardrobe design, or seeing more model variations made up?

I think that, in today’s financial climate, we all need to get used to the idea that the concept of a free lunch is no longer viable. I find your videos informative and inspiring and would happily pay for this content as you are providing so much more than a mere shop window. I haven’t got loads of cash to splash around and will admit I buy patterns from the cheapest source but neither do a expect a free ride.

Hi Kate. Difficult to say if I’d pay for extra content without knowing what it is. I suspect an awful lot of people watch your pattern release videos and then buy their patterns elsewhere so maybe something to incentivise people to buy from you would be helpful. I think the Liberty beauty club model is good model to look at. I would consider paying £10 a month into a ‘pattern club’ to save towards purchases if it was incentivised. You could use pattern club members only content, free pdf pattern once a quarter and other things like you had in your advent calendar. Hope that’s helpful.

Your viewers are from all over the world. The British Pound is powerful. Those of us that live in poorer countries, will be limited by cost as our currencies cannot compete. I do order patterns from the fold line, but I have to be careful and frugal. £1 = R23 at the moment. I live in South Africa, at the moment, but have lived in South America and other African countries. The local ready to wear garments are generally poorly made with inferior fabrics. That is why I sew. I am fortunate to have learned at my Nan's knee and my mother was an excellent seamstress. When I do visit the UK, its like being let loose in a toyshop!!! While I understand, people like me may well be in the minority, but the service you provide weekly is of huge value to me and I thank you very much.

I think it could be a good idea to have maybe, extra episodes we could pay for. Maybe things like you’ve done before, such as patterns based on some of the more stylish tv series or styles featured in films. You have done this before, like with The Queen’s Gambit. I love those. An example for the moment might be Claudia Winkleman’s wardrobe for Traitors recently. Would be great to see suggested copycat patterns. That kind of thing. I would pay for this kind of feature as a regular thing. I also love the videos where you suggest readings or exhibitions.

Morning Kate, I love your Sunday morning videos and would hate to not be able to start my day with a cuppa and your lovely face. I'm not sure about paid content as I'm retired and not one of the so called wealthy retirees. I'd be happy to buy a coffee provided it's Yorkshire and not London prices 😊 I'd prefer videos and would be interested in you chatting to pattern designers, how they come up with designs, put collections together. Also more content for older plus size. Anyway, please don't stop your Sunday morning free video. If you did, I'd be very sad.

I love your Sunday video with all the new patterns but really you are just promoting things you sell. The same goes for "find that pattern and sew the trends". The Monthly roundup is a bit different but because I too live outside of the UK it would be difficult to get to the exhibitions or buy the books (without a huge extra tax) you talk about So, while I find it very interesting, would I be prepared to pay - not really sure but probably not since there is so much free content out there.

I buy all my patterns from you as a result of watching your videos and those from other companies. I’m sure folk watch your videos and go straight to the company to buy them. Maybe you could have an incentive to buy from you to stop that. I always tell folk about your company because I think you are amazing. Maybe you could charge a small amount and have a free PDF? I don’t know if that would cost you even more? We are all feeling the pinch, I used not to worry about money, I’m retired, but I do think twice now. Everything has got so expensive. I look forward to your vlog on Sunday morning, please keep it no matter what else you decide.

Hi Kate, I think your web site is encyclopaedic and a unique resource for us sewers so I would be glad to pay a small amount for content as I appreciate what you do - but a small amount only as I am a pensioner. I must admit that I have been worried about your usp for some time. The patterns are getting so expensive - especially the indie ones. I’m trying to ‘hack’ the patterns I’ve got to make new styles. Maybe a whole lot of other people are doing the same thing, so maybe it’s a good thing to review your offer. Wishing you all the best, Helen

I think offering fee-based content is reasonable. What makes the most sense to me is the availability of monthly tiers similar to what many offer. For example, $3 no extra content, just support; $5 extra video and/or printed resources; and $10 extra content and small reduction (10-15%) in pattern purchases. With this model, those who are unable to pay anything continue to get the current weekly content for free, and others can choose what extras are important to them. Subscriptions and “coffees” have become quite prevalent, so it is important that the quality of the extra content be consistent. I enjoy and look forward to your weekly+ videos and would hate to see you cut back.

I’ve never signed up to any paid subscriptions, I simply can’t afford it, all the fivers add up if you try and support your favourite channels. I’ve found some that have offered paid content, no matter their best intentions, the free content quality and it’s regularity becomes impaired. It becomes watered down. I agree with another comment made, trying to ensure viewers purchase patterns they’ve seen you review from The Fold Line with perhaps a paid club membership, similar to what Minerva have, so there’s some money saving incentive. I do understand you need to be thinking of these ideas to sustain your business.

Love your regular blogs. This is a strange media environment. To be honest, I enjoy too many content creators in tiny snippets to support them all, so I'm not sure what content I'd be willing to pay for. But. I completely understand the need to bolster your income security, and you deserve to get paid for your online content which is useful, enjoyable and educational. Rather than charge a fee for special content, would you consider doing openly sponsored videos that feature sponsors you authentically think well of? Like showing the in-house making of a sample of a Tauko magazine pattern? Or a video featuring patterns by a design house you respect and already sell? Appreciate your candor and the conversation, regardless. May it continue.

A little late to comment here, from the US. The weekly video is also a promotion for your business, but the other videos and blogs you do are special content. I do love the ones where you find similar patterns as the costumes on a movie or tv show. You could make those accessible with a Buy Me a Coffee. I would love to see you do trend predictions ahead of the season instead of in the season, which would be more work for you but also more specialized content. It is actually better to sew ahead of a season so you have the garment ready. I do love your friendly style and hope you don’t change that.

Fully understand. However. I like the sponsorship idea by way of commercials or even features. You could certainly drive a lot of business to US and Canadian customers via online retailers and even doing match ups of US, Canadian, British, French, German, Etsy … patterns. The way this would play out your end could be quite transformative for the business.

Hello Kate, this might be the first time I’m commenting on any RU-vid video, but I do feel like I owe you as least that. I would pay for content because I can afford it and what you do is valuable to me. There are just a few sewing channels that I watch regularly and yours is top of that short list. I try to find just a few sites and stick with those to avoid being overwhelmed - if I’m going to actually make a decision to buy a pattern and sew something, I don’t need too many opinions and options in the mix. But it seems like no one really has what I need and that goes for the few fashion bloggers/vloggers I follow. The content I am most interest in is about capsule wardrobes, trend sewing, sewing outfits and tutorials. The trends videos you do are really great although I’m more interested in basics and athletic/athleisure clothing. My goal is to eventually be sewing most of what I wear on a regular basis, so I’m on a quest for the perfect T-shirt pattern that I can sew over and over again. Then some pajamas…I need to learn about how to source sustainable fabrics. I would pay for something like a sewing club or if you offered concierge services for helping people select patterns and perhaps being available as a tutor throughout the making process. It would help me to be accountable for finishing something on a timeline - like having a personal trainer or being a member of a class.

As I have small people, I can’t concentrate on written articles so well but videos I can at least wind back or rewatch where I miss something that interests me. I’d love some kind of thing where I could spend a coffee amount and put a certain number of those credits towards a pattern, or get access to a freebie (that isn’t really a freebie) occasionally. I love you folks - Kate keeps me sane as I haven’t been able to sew anything for years with the toddler around - but money is also pretty tight. 😓💚

Good morning, I love your videos but personally I wouldn't pay, but like on the other comments a pattern club would be something I would consider. The Fold line website is my go to for sewing patterns 😊.

I love your videos and really appreciate being able to find info about all the new pattern releases. But unfortunately, like many, I won’t be able to pay for the content - would just have to find another way of getting the new patterns info :(

Hi Kate, I do purchase video content in the form of "Lauren's Hints & Tips" on sewing for a fiver from G&G. I see that as value for money as it will prevent me (sometimes) from making a mistake on my sewing garments. Whether I would be willing to purchase video content from The Fold Line would depend on the content and if I saw it as value for money, e.g. save me time, money, headaches on my projects or if it was teaching me a new skill. Hope that helps and apologies for the delay in responding. 🙂

Hi Kate. I get a lot of joy from what you put together in The Fold Line blog and RU-vid clips and would love to show my support. So, yes I’d be happy to subscribe to content - whether the existing special content that you do, such as seasonal trends or other pieces you might put together. I don’t know much about the types of platforms available. At present I subscribe to audio podcasts which have additional subscriber content or through Patreon make payments for publicly available RU-vid videos to support those individuals or groups. I look forward to seeing what you putting together. xxx. Karen

Definitely happy to pay for extended content. Same style as to what you already do but a little more in-depth. I like the visits to high street shops and how you find patterns to mirror the trends.

I totally understand your dilemma and the fact you want to stabilize your company. Your pattern reviews are something I look forward to and I buy pdf’s from your website. I would not pay for content or extra content and to be honest would look elsewhere if I had to pay. Life is very expensive for us all at the moment. Adding another subscription to the budget is probably not something many people will do.

Love your content. The weekly new pattern videos I do watch but wouldn't pay for, as they are useful but essentially advertising, but I'd happily pay a subscription for other content - sewing the trends, deep dives into movie costumes etc. Good luck!

Just another thought - surely by providing these videos you are selling your products as the viewer is more likely to buy from your website?

I’m not generally a subscriber of things but I do have one that’s sewing related it’s a fiver a month and for your style videos I’d definitely be pleased to show my appreciation financially. Btw the video yesterday on the winter wardrobe layer’s really was motivating and helped me understand myself and my preferences So I have been able to fix a core of patterns for this season. I love you stuff Sew So Good💕❤️

The new Itch to stitch shirt/dress is so lovely. I bought the moment it was released! As long as the weekly pattern edits, and maybe a little video here and there, could still be free, I think I'd be willing to pay a small sum for some extras :) I think a success criteria would have to be that it would be easy to pay (type Ko-fi, paypal or similar). I am only really interested in video content. Content wise, I would love to "come with you" to some exhibitions in London, and I would love to see some of your makes, favorite patterns, pattern detectives etc., and I would definitly pay to have more of the videos where you have pattern suggestions for movie costumes. Maybe some people would like a pattern subscription box? (I can't due to the import taxes, but still..) Good luck on your new endevours!

Hi Kate, Looking at the comments was a bit disappointing I must say. You did state your videos would go on as it stands. I have joined several iterations of the “extras”. One I will be leaving as the extra really isn’t and the other is so worthwhile and enjoyable that right now I wouldn’t think of leaving. So, it would depend on what the extra’s would be for. Sew alongs, problem sewing fixes, fitting videos etc., would be worthwhile. Considering your international audience a mix of pre-recorded videos and some “live” events (trying to accommodate time differences) would be great. I have a ton of patterns right now that I haven’t used as I am afraid of cutting into the fabric (I seem to have an obsession with Italian wool and a local shop quite often has it for 75% off - so have quite a bit of that as well). I work part time in a fabric shop, so understand how tight the market is right now. I LOVE what you guys do and you are where I go to buy my patterns. XOXO

I agree with many economically many cant afford a subscription, but a kofi type donation would work for many, i know i would buy you a coffee, if it was something i used to create something or it was shared knowledge that i would usually pay for. Difficult to keep everyone happy but do whatever is best for you😊

I’d support a Patreon, Discord on similar but really the pattern companies could do a wee bit of sponsorship…I bet there’s not a one of us who hasn’t bought a pattern after seeing it on the edit. This is probably also true for many who are outside the UK as some have commented…I also enjoyed your Xmas discounts…would pay regularly for access to that sort of thing…

I would pay for zoom meet-ups with your community. It would be so fun and useful to follow up on your brand edits and tv/film inspo videos with a live chat. People could share additional patterns that are good matches for the given brand or show; share sewing tips for the trickier patterns; and maybe those who have sewn them up already could post pix in the chat? That way you could earn a bit of income from all the hard work that goes into the videos without putting up a paywall.

Hi Kate. Much that I love your videos and watch almost every one of them, I’m not sure I’m in a position to regularly pay for more content. It’s not that I don’t appreciate what you do but I feel I buy most of my patterns through you so I feel I’d be paying twice. Your videos already make me buy more! Diana

Love it as it is. If you have the pattern I’m interested in I’ll get it on you website. No printed ones/label/notions sadly because of Brexit. I do see your vids as part of your advertising, I wouldn’t go beyond a paywall.

As with the first answer yes more sew the trends etc What about doing a monthly kit including fabric. I pay my patterns from you but I like tissue patterns so I print elsewhere (don’t know if you can offer an option) could you ever bring back the in person sewing Weekender but commercially, it used to sell out so fast and I’m sure people would pay more.

Over time it seems like you've added so much wonderful content above and beyond the "The Edit" which has to take up a lot of time just on its own and given the comments below might be best to leave as is as you've already noted! Some of the other content that you develop (the Capsule is my fave!) would be standalone worthy of paying for as well as other types of content that would come along. Kofi might be hit and miss but something like Patreon would give you a more sustainable funding source. Love your channel- my Sunday morning go to even before coffee~
