This is another very nice to razor and another great shave. This DE89 has the same head as the Mühle R89 but a shorter handle which gives it a slightly different feel. I'm using a Treet razor blade and some Wholly Kaw soap. Very nice.
It's a great razor Mark, the first razor I bought when I switched from cartridge and disposable razors ( oh the horror ) . For myself I find that an Astra sp blade , or a feather, work really well in it . Imagine if I'd bought something like an R41 for my first razor ! Still, I suppose the time in hospital recuperating would have been relaxing !!!
Hey Neill, I hope you're doing okay and enjoying your weekend. I'll try a Feather blade, I imagine they do go very well together. I think it is a great razor, especially for a beginner. It's quite forgiving but does a cracking job. I've just had Sunday dinner and have got my feet up. Bliss. Take care. It's good to be in touch. Cheers.
I really like my DE89. It's a wonderful razor for the money, and in my opinion, should be in every wet shaver's collection. Great finish, great performance, and great value!!
Hi Chris. It's a lovely razor, not too aggressive but just right for a lot of people. That style of head, is the most popular, and copied, in the world. It may take you a few shaves to get used to it. Just go gentle. This video is quite old and I've actually just bought myself another DE89. I haven't had one in the den for ages. All the best. 👍
Hi Mark... very nice shave. Great review of the Edwin Jagger. I do know about neck irritation and routinely over shave the neck area to try for the BBS... one day I'll learn to know just when to just stop. Take care and have a nice week.
Thanks Paul, I hope your having a good week. It took me ages to settle into my shave routine and avoid that soreness. I see some guys do a three pass shave with touch ups. I think that would finish me off! I've had a few good three pass shaves lately with my Feather straight razor; If anything, you'd think that would make me really sore but it was absolutely fine. It's a confusing world. Take care pal.
Thank you, I hope you are having a great week-end. Bergen is rather well known. I would love to be well enough, one day to visit Norway and see the Northern Lights. That would be so fantastic. Have you seen them, Jan?
I have not seen the northern lights in north Norway, but it appears here in the south from time to time. It’s beautiful to watch. But I guess it’s more spectacular in the north. Hope you will get a chance to see it sometime. 👍🏻😊
Hello Mark, whilst I realise this video was recorded a few months ago I have only just started viewing your channel. I was interested in this particular review because the Edwin Jagger DE89 was my first proper razor. Mine is slightly different to the one in the review. I decided to go with the completely smooth chrome handle. I was worried about it being slippery but in practice it's fine. The first time I used it left my neck bleeding. I had only been used to a Gillette Fusion cartridge razor. Now I apply a little shaving oil before I start brushing on the soap. Much better and less blood! I am glad you like the EJ DE89. I was lucky I bought a decent razor at my first attempt because I really wasn't sure what to pick. Best wishes.
Hi David, I accidentally deleted the notification of your message before I replied. I'm glad I found it again 🙂 Now, I would have thought the smooth handle would have been slippery; that's a surprise. The DE89 is a nice razor, it's a different shave with a heavier handle. I have the R89 head with the black acrylic Mühle handle; the razors number has completely escaped me, at the moment. Good razor. I'm getting into using a little oil before my shave. Honestly, I don't know if it makes a difference, or not, to the shave but post shave, it feels really good. Thanks for getting it touch pal. Have a great week. 👍😃
Mark, the EJ DE89 is one of my favorite razors. Where most people start off with a 34c I didn't own a 3 piece razor until last year and it was, you guessed it the DE89. As always watching your videos calms me and soothes my temperament. Thanks for another great video.
Hi Roy. I hope your well. I must admit to being quite a fan of the DE89, even after just a few shaves. It is very comfortable and I get a very close and smooth shave. I must admit, it has surprised me, along with the R89. Happy days 😃👍 Have a good weekend.
Hi Mark- What a nice shave today; thank you! The EJ DE89 looks like a great razor, indeed. The only reason I have not picked one up is because I do have a few mild razors as it is. I have not tried the Wholly Kaw shaving soap as yet, but will definitely give it a go. I usually only do a two-pass shave, as well; one pass WTG and a light XTG pass. I usually shave 5-6 times a week, and anything more than that for a daily shave would leave me in constant discomfort! I hope you are getting ready for a good weekend ahead. Take good care and all the best!
I've been pondering on a bright metallic red. I suppose I could still paint the letters in white; I'm not sure red would show up. I did buy some bright blue glitter nail varnish, which looks tremendous in the bottle but seems to dry differently to how it looks wet. I'm not sure.
Mark, you just defined to a T what I am trying to do in my shaves with Sensitive Skin. I try very hard for BBS shaves without irritation! You know what ? When you admit on video the problems you have to overcome in shaving you are being very helpful and make some of us feel like we are not the only ones that have challenges to conquer in our shaves! I am almost there but still in the hunt ! (grinn) Kit
Oh yeah, without irritation is the key. I see a few fellows shave, on video, and after three passes, with touch ups, they look really sore. To be honest, I could do two passes and not worry, especially on my neck but doing three passes, for the camera, has challenged me a little. It's been interesting. You've made my day, thank you. It's really nice to know that something I've said has resonated with you. I really appreciate it. Cheers, Kit.
Mark, you talk of top notes and base notes with great assurance. Lecture on the fixing quality of musk. You have the skills of a good lawyer, able to master his brief quickly. Bravo. Acquired a Yaqi 24mm two band badger. Excellent quality and price. Really pleased with it. On the question of difficult areas to shave, I have similar problems by the side of my mouth on the right side only, my neck as you do and shave across my neck for the third pass (gingerly for fear of cutting my throat!). Frustration this week with the Parker 98 that appeared not to cut at all. With a Feather it was ok. Muhle r41 tomorrow to compensate
Thanks Chris. I'll let you into a secret - I looked it up on the Internet. Shush, don't tell anyone 😜 It's something that I have recently become more interested in and I do like it when soap manufactures list the scent ingredients as a progression of notes. I find it very useful. I think it's really fascinating that different scent molecules evaporate at different rates. Bad luck with that Parker! I've only shaved a ross my neck a few times. I learned very quickly that is not s not for me 😕 Mind you, I remember when I first started shaving with a de blade it was ages before I could go against the grain on my neck.
Two important keyboard skills for consultants and lawyers: ctrl+C and ctrl+V. I'd be disappointed if you had not used the wonder that is the internet. My professional work relied heavily on material published by various bodies, governments and NGOs. Email and ability to send draft reports to all parts of the world made international advisory work possible. Researching a few fragrances seems to me educational and something to encourage. The important thing was you didn't just spout the fragrances but talked about what you could identify and what those you were not familiar with were similar to. You are a skilled communicator and getting better.
Thank you Chris. I appreciate your comments. It's good to have an idea of what I'm doing well and why it works. I must admit to not thinking too hard about the verbal presentation, which is probably a good thing. I forgot to write earlier, those Yaqi brushes seem excellent for the price. I really must try a two band badger, at some point. I've got my feet up, this afternoon. I'll be watching an old film later. I recorded The Third Man, which is apparently very good. Take care.
There's a cinema in Vienna that shows only The Third Man, with several performances every day. It's a classic and the black and white is tremendous as is the music. The funfair and wheel that feature in the film are still there, but Vienna has been restored to its former glory. I worked in Bratislava for a while and used to fly into Vienna, which is only an hour away. Definitely recommend the brush, good for face lathering.
Wow. One cinema dedicated to that film! It's strange to think, the film was made a few years after the end of the war. Those building most probably were not studio sets. It was a good film. I enjoy those old black and white films. You used to see them, on the television, all the time but so much, these days. My favourite actor, I think, is James Stewart.
Hi Mark. I subscribed to your channel a while ago and really enjoy your informative videos ! The De 89 works REALLY well for me with a Personna Platinum blade. Best wishes .... keep on shaving ! Stu.
Thank you Stu, that is very kind of you to say so. I try and make them informative rather than just another fellow having shave. I will definitely try the DE89 with a Personna blade. I must say the shave I've had over the couple of days, have been excellent. Great razor. Take care.
I am using a Merkur 38c with different blades . Knightsbridge shave cream made in England. My brush is a Capt Fawcett super badger . I use a alum block and then nivia shave balm. Toronto Canada.
Nice! I don't think you can beat Nivea, for the price. I wish they'd bring out a few scented options. I'm loving my two band badger at the moment; you'll see in this week's video. Take care in Toronto 😃👍
Hey Mark Sir.. that shave was a nice treat 3 passes... you looked a bit red back maybe as you said 3 on cheeks 2 on neck... glad your enjoying the razor mate Hope your ok and your postman brought your pads... ? WOW that brush is looking amazing... colour I’d say bloodbred... or Deep sea. Blue.. cheers buddy have a super weekend..
Mate, I think those pads might be coming on a slow boat from China! Good colour choices, I like the idea of both of those but a metallic blood red! 👌 I wonder if sparkly nail varnish would work? Yeah it was a little sore but I might stick with it for a bit, to see if I toughen up 😃 I'll give you a shout before you go away. Cheers pal.
Friendship Shaving Hey brother Hope your well?.. ha ha on the pads 😂... man can you track them?.. I was thinking that on the nail varnish then add some clear varnish to lock it all in that would be awesome I maybdo 1 if I can find a nice wooden brush.. cheers buddy 👌🏾
Hey mark how have you been buddy sorry I have not been around to catch your videos but I will catch up on the ones I have missed I am gonna be putting out more videos soon I am waiting for something to come in the mail that I ordered on Friday I hope it doesn’t take too long to get it here have a good week and I look forward to seeing the next shave
Hey Josh, how are you doing. I've been meaning to head over to your channel for a while; please excuse me, for not quite getting there yet. I'm so busy answering comments, which I live to do; planning my next video; trying to find a good deal of something worthwhile, to use on the channel etc. You know what it's like. I'll look forward to finding out what you ordered. Have a good week, pal. Cheers 😃👍
Hi Mark, nice video as always. It´s interesting that your "sensitive" areas are exactly the same as mine, but I must confess that with a safety razor I can´t "solve" the "problem" in a satisfactory way. I already tried several safety razors and blades with no good results. I always get nicks and some kind of irritation. I hate to say this but I'm getting much better results with Bic Flex 3 disposable razors.
No. Wash you dirty mouth out with soap 😅👍 You know, what ever works best for you is obviously the way to go and that's one of the things I enjoy about shaving - the variety; the differences in shaves people get with the same blade or razor. The variations are endless. As long as you enjoy your shave, you're winning.
You have tremendous technique, sir. I wonder how I can improve my shaves. I'm always getting some irritation on my neck, especially lower neck. Even though I mapped my grain and try to shave only with the grain and across the grain it seems impossible to avoid at least some irritation and redness. Probably it's difficult for me to maintain the angle and pressure especially on the neck and I'm doing a bad job. Hopefully with time I'll get better. I started wet shaving about 3 months ago with the DE 89 and my favourite blade so far is bic chrome platinum. Have a great day!
Hello Baha. I have made a Sunday Sitdown video that might help. I suspect that it is shaving against the grain that might be causing you to have problems. A lot of people cannot shave against the grain. I would try thee or even two passes with the grain, just to see if that cures your irritation.
I do like that razor but the head of the Mühle 106 and the Edwin Jagger DE89 are identical. Mühle and EJ developed the '89' razor together and shared manufacturing costs. The Mühle 106 is simply a Mühle R89 but with a different handle. The slight extra weight in the 106 handle makes it a touch more aggressive - just very slightly. Stick with what you have, mate. It's a good razor to start out with.
Done! That's a great idea, thanks Stephen. I might leave it few weeks before I do that though, just so everyone can have a little break from Mühle. I seem to have mentioned them a lot, lately. I have just received a replacement head for the Rocca. 😃👍
Edwin Jagger have made very minor changes to theirs. As an example, the post that the handle screws onto is now made of plated brass, which would add a fraction of weight to the head. I find that the DE89 is a better razor. It's a strange thing because they do seem, to all intents and purposes, to be identical but most people seem to like one or the other. 🤔
Thank you Jonathan. I'm not sure what you mean by shaving buddy but I think we already are. As we write and converse, we'll get to know each other a bit more. What are you shaving with at the moment?
I really enjoy using a brush, it makes the shave seem really luxurious, when compared to squirting gel or foam, from a can, into the palm of your hand and spreading on your face with your fingers. The 1917 Single Ring is a lovely razor. I would really like an old Gillette Bulldog.
Hello I live in Antalya Turkey. I am from Rotherham originally but I have been over here since 2002. I want one of these Edwin Jagger DE89 but they don't sell them over here. Fed up of the cost of cartridge razors. Do you know if they would deliver one over here please. Great video and review.
Hey Andrew, thanks for dropping by. I'm sure they post worldwide at an flat rate which I seem to remember is quite reasonable.. Look out for a buy, sell and trade Facebook group for wet shavers or a wet shaving forum. Someone will have one they wish to move on. Cheers 👍
@@FriendshipShaving I looked direct on the website and it says they ship worldwide so I sent them an email to see if they ship to Turkey. If not I will visit my mum in Rotherham when all this mess is over and buy one while I am over there. Great video.
I need to get a de 89 . I have a Merkur 38c and it is very nice . I was paying attention to what you said about getting a bbs shave . I shave at night so why am I killing myself to get one . I can get a very good shave in 2 passes and not get razer burn . Thanks
Quite right Dev. Night shaving is the best and as you wrote, it's pointless getting razor burn in the effort for a smooth chin. I tried to go back to three passes; it seems to be what everyone does but after a few weeks I start to get irritated. I've gone back to two passes and I'm getting great shaves. The EJ de89 is good. I think it just pips the Mühle R89. Take care.
Keith, that is my new job! 😃 I have noticed that they don't come on the second hand market very often. I'd wait for a sale. I hope your well. Take care.
Great shave! Do you know where can i buy one of those lather brushes? Really like the look of it and both videos that you have used it in has made me really want one. Thanks Jonny
Hey Jonny. I know that it is an APShaveCo brush. They have an Etsy shop but here is a website address: www.apshaveco.com/shop My brush handle is on there with a different knot. My knot is called an Angel Hair knot but there are some other great looking brushes and a contact form. You my have a search for Yaqi brushes. I know they are selling great brushes at a fantastic price and I think these synthetic knots come from them, in China. Good luck 😃👍
Hej Mark, didn't we hv some conversation that DE89 n R89 are similar, but not identical? Jagger n Muehle started construction of a new head together, but lateron went slightly different ways (Jagger with the baseplate). I use both, but prefer the DE89 as it's chrome finish is flawless n superior to Muehle (especially the inside). Also I find the Jagger to be an inch more comfortable, but this could be subjective to myself. Apparently Jagger using the same chroming facilities as RR does, flawless. Cheers.
Well, I don't know. Mühle said, they were the same initially but they now have a brass screw, on their cap. In response to your insistence that they are similar but not identical, and you may well be correct, I have written to Edwin Jagger and asked them. We shall have to wait for their reply. They look the same 🙂
Dear Mark, yeah, the Muehle reply, I do look frwrd, too. There was an article few months ago, where the Jagger guy was questioned abt this being identical, or just vry similar. He said said the same, construction started together, but Jagger later went slightly differently with the baseplate. Howevr, those 2 razors r great ones, daily to go to examples. Differences, if any, almost unnoticable, myself just prefer the Jagger, its chroming is just a notch btr than most other razors. RR is chroming same place, another thing I read. You enjoy yr lovely sunday, Mark and hv a great new week ahead of you. Cheers, Achim+
For quite some time, I wonder why Jagger does not come up with new models. The DE89 their flagship for quite some time now. Yes some optical changes like diamond knurling, but the base is same. Likely Jagger still being satisfied with sales and if I would vote for the most overall complete razor, the DE89 wud be my choice. Cheers.
What would you recommend, the muhle r89 or the Ej de89? I know they are the same heads but which razor is the best quality or better for shave in your opinion? I like the fact of the muhle being German but like buying local ie Sheffield UK. Thanks.
That's a difficult question, as you mention they are mostly identical. Quite a few people mention that the Edwin Jagger gives a better shave, to be honest I think they're pretty much the same but the EJ89 is cheaper, or it was the last time I looked. I do think the slightly heavier acrylic handle gives a better shave. 🙂
Hi Ross. It's a difficult question, as everyone's shave is very subjective. I have used both razors and I personally much prefer the DE89. For me, the Merkur 34c was much to mild. It shaved well, it is a huge seller after all but I couldn't feel the blade. However, if you see one second hand on eBay for a very reasonable price it might be worth trying. I think it's the type of razor you might learn with and then pass it on. The DE89 is a great razor for me. I think this is a great razor to learn with and it's a razor to keep. It is a mild and effective shave and You can feel the blade a bit more. I think this is important. It will allow you to get the best angle for you. I would choose the Edwin Jagger. I hope this helps. Cheers.
Gordon, that is a great question and to be honest, I'm really not sure. I think, I'm edging toward the DE89 but it may simply be that the smaller handle affects the feel of the razor in a way that I like. When I've shaved with them both a bit more I will, no doubt, come to a conclusion 🙂👍
Friendship Shaving OK I was just trying to decide what one I would buy if I were to get one, and I remember you saying that Muhle changed the screw on theirs. I don’t normally worry about that sort of thing but EJ warn about being careful not to over tight on there website for the DE89. So I guess its all in the handle.
That's very interesting, Gordon. I didn't realise they advised against over tightening the handle. I think you would really have to go some, to do some damage.
They are practically identical, as they were developed by both Edwin Jagger and Mühle working together, so it's really too close to say. The EJ89 has a brass centre post on the head cap, which might add a little extra weight. I like my R106, which is the R89 head with an acrylic (heavier) handle. That's my choice.
Personally speaking I found the Merkur 34c to be far too mild, even for a beginner but, I am aware that a lot of people really like this razor. It is, I believe, their biggest seller. I would go with the EJ de89. It has a slightly longer handle and it is a great razor. I believe you'll learn with this razor and it's likely one you'll keep.
Generally I like a handle that's about 8.5cm. A little shorter is okay; the Marvel razor comes in at 8cm but it is a little more chunky. The longer handled razors, usually up to 9.5cm are still very good but I have quite slender hands/fingers. A man with large hands would probably prefer a longer handle. I would say that if you have limited movement in your shoulders then a long handle will help. I'm afraid you're going to have to make your own decision here 🙂👍
