If we are following the "standard" rules for an egg drop, Serg and Ben did cheat. You aren't supposed to use anything that creates lift or significant air resistance. I really didnt expect the beef box to survive a single drop, although my lack of faith were in the box-size looking too large for the amount of packing material (err, I mean meat). Looked to me like it would jostle too much and have too much empty space alowing for the meat to move out of the way when the egg tries to hit the box. Did however not expect the main point of failure be the structural integrity, but in hindsight I figure that is somewhat obvious it would fall apart.
@MrHawkeye41
@MrHawkeye41 5 лет назад
I mean, it was some sound logic. Hands are good at holding eggs, but bones are not. Let's get some hands without bones!
@feha92
@feha92 5 лет назад
@@MrHawkeye41 I never said anything about meat being bad at holding eggs. But thats not a hand with no bones, thats a hand with the bone on the outside (chitin?) that has less meat than volume. If the meat moves out of the way then there is only "bone" left to impact. To continue your hand analogy, its like a hand with the fingers spread apart enough that the egg can roll out between them.
@KreeTheBasilisk

Plastic drinking straws, make a tetrahedron that encases with them but has the ends too long, in a manner where there's three straws sticking out of each vertex. It sends the motion tangent to the the egg. Boom, plastic straws are free at fast food places.

Yeah, Serge and Wheeler picked the best strategy of limiting the egg's terminal velocity to a non-lethal amount. Beej and Ian's idea of cushioning the fall is not alltogether bad, but it's way harder to find a material that has the right k constant to slow down the egg enough that it doesn't impact the floor that hard while not being so rigid that it itself shatters the egg

Interesting challenge. I remember someone did a documentary about something to do with technologies related to g-forces, and they dropped a lightbulb from a high altitude balloon in a container. The bulb survived in working condition. Apparently the container was inspired by the bone structure of a woodpecker's skull, which has to cushion it's brain against ramming it's beak into trees at high speed. The solution was something akin to getting a moderadely soft outer layer (something akin to a dense rubber), a hard middle layer, then filling the interior with soft loose fill padding. (something like cotton wool.) I'm sure the exact design that allowed a lightbulb to survive a drop from 100,000 feet or so was a little more carefully designed than that, but this was roughly the model. It certainly made me think about how you'd construct a drop-proof container... It's a hard but flexible layer, soft padding, a hard layer and some soft filling material. Yeah, here it is: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XZlp3SVEMDg.html XD quite something huh. Lightbulb from 100,000 feet, and it survives. Also Ian and Beej's idea is along similar lines... So, there is that. (though it doesn't go all the way with it so likely doesn't work quite as well.)
