Jerome, in the prologue to his Commentary on Matthew, mentions a number of apocryphal Gospels -those according to the Egyptians, Thomas, Matthias, Bartholomew, the Twelve, Basilides, and Apelles: probably he depends upon Origen, for he himself disliked and avoided apocryphal books, with few exceptions; the Gospel according to the Hebrews, for instance, he hardly reckoned as apocryphal. Of this Gospel of Bartholomew we have no sort of description: we find it condemned in the Gelasian Decree, which may mean either that the compiler of the Decree knew a book of that name, or that he took it on trust from Jerome. In the pseudo-Dionysian writings two sentences are quoted from 'the divine Bartholomew,' and a third has just been brought to light from the kindred 'book of Hierotheus'

The style of the script suggested that it was probably written in Egypt in the fifth or sixth century, and Rossetto expected another Christian text. Instead, she began to see names from mythology: Persephone, Zeus, Dionysus. The lost writing was classical Greek.

The library of the Sacred Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai was in the process of modernizing, making its vast collection old Christian texts available online, when researchers discovered there was more to some parchments than met the eye. A closer look at the mounds of text protected behind the walls of the 6th century monks' convent revealed writings, visible only through new, high-tech methods, the BBC reported.
A study of the 4,500 manuscripts-an assemblage of early Christian texts that dwarfs any library outside the Vatican-revealed at least 170 of them contained erased information. Using multi-spectral imaging of parchments, researchers were able to spot notes in obscure languages, ancient medical guides and Biblical revisions, which monks had once scrubbed off and written over.
