English is an official language in HK. Macau a little less but any official report or document in HK is avaliable in English. The Brits only gave it back in '97. Macau I only went 2-3 times, English is a bit less common. Definitely wasn't anything like this in 2000-2010. They cleaned the place up. Still lots of triads but you don't see that. I agree. I love True Crime for the investigation and psychological elements, things that tend to require more empathy. That's why I hate those makeup & murder channels. When I first found True Crime RU-vid, that's all I saw, so I watched a couple, and describing that horrible violence while applying makeup always seemed so unfeeling to me that the construction of those videos unnerved me more than the cases did. I'm glad I've found channels like this that take such care to honor the VICTIMS of the crimes while still honoring the True Crime genre. It's a tough needle to thread sometimes, but Simon and Co. do it beautifully.

It seems to expose that he has a very limited and passive desire to prevent crime, in which he's willing to be a good citizen and do the limited things of participating in giving up some of his own personal privacy, by adding his fingerprints to a database, but stops somewhere before being as active as placing a phone call, and complain that there sounds like a brutal crime right next door to him. Though honestly i doubt he would really be able to stop himself from placing that call, if he were truly in that situation

That part is great, but I really wish he (George) would stop dehumanizing the killers in general leading up to that kind of sentiment. What makes them awful is that they are human like everyone else and still end up committing such atrocities, not that they are rabid animals or inhuman monsters and committing such slaughter. Otherwise it starts leaning too heavily into sadistic revenge porn, which isn't exactly honoring or even giving proper deference to the victims.

Demeaning and trivializing their ego and worth as a person is good, since it takes away the legacy most of them want to leave (though this particular guy didn't care about that), but dehumanizing makes them more like a natural disaster that someone unlucky got caught in. It takes away much of the ascribed agency and (while it's certainly not the intention of such language) begins to diminish what the victims went through by sanitizing out the meaning of murderer from the murder.

There was a beauty to being able to move to a new city and just reinvent yourself in a way that is not so possible anymore, with many invisible ties to ones past that keep a continuity anywhere one goes, but it is also beautiful to be in touch with friends of the past and still have their beautiful humor brighten one's day no matter where the winds have blown each of you

It's not necessary to tell every detail about murders and how every second of an innocent person's death was like. Although it's interesting to hear these true stories, not liking certain aspects of it like the details of people being chopped up is honestly normal. I enjoy listening to true crime but it's not something to be taken in constantly since it is heavy stuff and can really weigh on people's mind.

The beer bottle caused the father (Lin) to back up, but Lin didn't realize his seven year old was petrified and in reach of the killer (Huang) until it was too late. Huang grabbed the child and held him basically at 'knife point' to get the mother in law - then wife when her mother couldn't do it - to tie up the others and gag them. If the seven year old had been able to retreat with the family, it's a lot more likely that Lin would have been able to overwhelm and chase off Huang. While it's not detailed, I'm sure that Huang didn't untie anyone while he killed them.

I’d say more to blame. He doesn’t gamble, this doesn’t happen. He pays, this doesn’t happen. He doesn’t get in the guy’s face, laugh at him, and ask him what he’s going to do about it, this doesn’t happen. He honors his debt with a weapon to his child’s neck, this doesn’t happen. Spree killers lack the cooling off period the serial killers and don’t resume normal life between killings, also don’t engage in behaviors like stalking that serial killers do. (Think tampa shooter) Serial killers kill multiple people over a period of time for and have an MO of sorts, have varying lengths of cooling off period between kills, engage in other behaviors in regards to victims leading up to killing, and resume a normal life in cooling off periods. (Think Ted Bundy) Mass murder is killing a group of people in one go, usually not pre-meditated, but it can be. Mass murderers are less likely to become repeat offenders compared to the previous two categories, but they still sometimes do. (Think the case covered in this video) Genocide is much much larger scale and impersonal. (think carpet bombing in war.)

@Donval Harris I'm an over the road truck driver and listen to this for hours on end. Day after day. It's wonderfully entertaining and engaging. Prety much all of Simon's channels are great, but Casual Criminalist is easily by far my favorite.

Nah, time stamps are a better option for people wanting a PG experience . It's like putting a safe room in a haunted house -- come onnnnn, we are all here expecting what's been censored... As someone who shared the predilection and ruined my young brain on actual gore exploitation sites, this show is a far cry from "gruesome photos". It's as intrinsic as sex to a degree, having a natural curiosity to want to explore and illuminate the darkest facets of human mortality. Not that I want Simon to endure anything he'd be uncomfortable with, it just sucks to have to track a more detailed study of this elsewhere when I really prefer his narrations.

@@KarynHill never would I expect nor request photos on a crime podcast (on YT of all places) for my own reasons, so that's an easy part for me to agree with you on, but to hold back on the script because of the details... It does do injustice to this genre, as Simon himself suggested, when compared to his other podcasts. I fully believe it's for the children and understand that again, I think it was more for him than anyone else -- I have kids of my own and that's when I stopped being capable of stomaching crime scene photography etc. So I'm really just referring to the script and verbal details. But it isn't for everyone, and that doesn't hurt me any, just frustrates lol

In my last apartment, they sent someone from the power company around to convince us all to switch to some green energy source (It was something they needed literally everyone to sign off on). The guy made some small talk and asked how long I'd been living there. When I told him 8 years, he was like "Wow, that's the longest of anyone I've talked to so far!" And I'm like, I'll take your word for it man, I have no reason to interact with any of these people. And then I moved out six months later.

I had a horrible awful neighbor. So awful a judge said fine she would fine me for his numerous/almost daily noise complaints on my dogs "barking" but ordered him to anger management and put in a restraining order. Do you know how much if an a hole to have to be for a judge to assign a restraining order before someone asks for it? Anyway, when he didn't shine his light into my kitchen one morning to annoy me while making coffee and I didn't see his car move or the lights change in his house, I called the police for a well check. He had had a stroke but was alive. Not sure if I would notice or call in about my nicer more busy neighbors.

Yeah I live in student housing and I honestly have no clue who lives in the studio next to me. Given how lenient they are on payments in fairly sure it'd take months for anyone to notice if somebody dies

@@GuntherRommel I have noticed that...but to be honest some of these cases are just horrifying any way you slice it. I think it may be beyond the literary prowess of any wordsmith to downplay the sheer brutality of cases such as this and another is the Hello Kitty murder (which actively made my shoulders tense). I always loved true crime and the Crime and Investigation channel and stuff like that...but I can see why some people refuse to touch certain cases. Horrifying in a different way...how some murder is just spicy enough to be entertaining and put on most TV cable packages and some are too ghastly and fall into obscurity. Which is worse though? The ideal is that we'd hear of neither but the fact that there is sliding scale of 'watchable' killing is disturbing in its own right.

Agreed! It makes me lose respect for channels when they relish in the gritty details & not the storyline. It comes off as torture porn & exploiting the victims horrible plight... The story & lessons are engaging as they are.

I think I mentioned this before, but his anecdotes and tangents make it feel as though I'm not just listening to a podcast but as though I'm just sitting with an old friend discussing a topic of interest. Very similar feeling to when Simon was talking about sitting on that balcony just relaxing whilst drinking that Chinese beer.
