This book is a strident attack on the superficiality of Parisian bourgeois ideology. It is biting and beautifully written with a lot of philosophical insight.

Hi Eston. I am so glad you liked the book. I think I loved it so much because I could identify with Renee. I grew up in an environment where learning was not valued, and because I was a big reader starting at a very young age, my own family kind of looked at me as an outsider. Later when I was working my way through school I had to take a lot of menial jobs, and in order to fit in with my co-workers I often had to hide my love of learning so that they wouldn't think I thought I was better than them, which in no way is meant as a put down of them, it's just the way things were. This is why I find this book in no way pretentious, I have been in Renee's position. I guess often in life we have to play a part in order to meet other's expectations of us even though we may be nothing like the way they perceive us. Thank you Eston.

I completely identified with Renee as well. I wonder why it is that many people are so quick to take offense at someone trying to learn or experience something like a great work of art and interpret it as some kind of put down? I grew up in rural Arkansas and even ran into this attitude sometime as I was growing up by trying to speak proper English. I liked the relationship between Renee and her friend Manuela. Manuela didn't love Tolstoy or Japanese films but they were still great friends. That tells me right there that Renee was not a pretentious person. As I read many of the negative goodreads and amazon reviews I had to wonder if those reviewers even read the book. And Paloma recognizes and hates pretentiousness she sees in her sister Colombe. Thanks for recommending this book and then reminding me of it again. It is a gem of a book that really resonated with me.

Thanks for this review/discussion. I didn't realize the book had been out do long. I've seen it and the title was always curious, but I never really looked at it or knew anything about it. Seriously considering it now.

Thanks Peg! I hope you are having wonderful holidays as well. I'm going to have a year end video coming up soon and will discuss next years reading. It's going to be much less structured than the last few years. Not sure how that's going to work out but we'll see :)

Your presentation of this book reminds me of Obama's Becoming. She writes of a time when her cousin "accuses" her of talking like a white girl. It felt like a punishment for wanting more, etc.

Is it appropriate for a 12 yr old girl?
@EarnestlyEston

There is quite a bit of philosophy and cultural references that might not be in the experience of a typical 12 year old. One of the main characters is a 12 year old girl though so that might be relatable. This young girl sees the world as absurd and vows to commit suicide but develops a friendship with an older women and her perspective starts to change. Depending on the 12 year old girl this book might be of interest. There isn’t anything inappropriate such as overtly adult only themes that I can remember.
