You may start to see a new face on the EleCams from time to time - Artie! Did you catch him last week downing trees in the habitat? Be on the lookout for him and the other Sanctuary residents at elephants.com/EleCam.
Downing trees is a natural behavior for the African elephants, which assists in seed dispersal and creates feeding options for them and smaller herbivores.
About The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee:
Located 85 miles southwest of Nashville in Hohenwald, Tenn., The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee provides elephants retired from performance and exhibition with individualized care, the companionship of a herd, and the opportunity to live out their lives in a safe haven dedicated to their well-being. The Sanctuary also works to raise public awareness of the complex needs of elephants in captivity, and the crisis facing elephants in the wild. The Elephant Discovery Center, The Sanctuary’s educational center with exhibits focused on elephants’ role as a keystone species, is open to visitors in downtown Hohenwald. The elephants’ habitats are closed to the public.

He made short work of those trees. Then when he exposed the roots of the last one I found myself saying "Go on Archie, get those roots boy!" just as he found them himself. What a wonderful display of natural behaviours. Thank you all! ❤️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This is what I found on the elephant sanctuary website: Artie (Aardvark) is a male African savanna elephant born in the wilds of Zimbabwe in 1983. Before the age of one, Artie was orphaned due to a government-sponsored culling. He was captured and brought to the United States in 1984 with a group of 64 young elephants. Known as the “Nautilus Elephants,” this group was part of a plan by Arthur Jones, inventor of Nautilus exercise equipment, to create his own herd. The plan was soon abandoned, and the surviving elephants were sold. Artie was purchased by a private owner who trained elephants for circuses. Artie spent more than twenty years in performance and exhibition. In October 2007, Artie and two female African elephants were transferred to the North Carolina Zoo to become a part of the zoo’s herd. In assessing his needs as an aging bull, North Carolina Zoo made the decision to transfer 40-year-old Artie to The Sanctuary to give him the best opportunities for lifetime care and continued socialization. Artie arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary on January 31, 2023, becoming the 29th resident and The Sanctuary’s first permanent bull elephant. Artie weighs approximately 13,900 pounds and stands 11 feet tall. His most distinguishing features are his prominent cheekbones and thick trunk. Unique for African savanna elephants, Artie does not have tusks; it is believed they were removed sometime before 2007. Artie has been an active participant in The Sanctuary’s Protected Contact training and with his individualized health care. He is known to be very “talkative” and chortles often, especially for breakfast! Artie can be seen roaming and foraging throughout his habitat, rolling in the mud, and has an enthusiasm for pushing down small hardwoods and pine trees.

How was a rich man, not knowledgeable about animals, allowed to bring in so many non-native animals? I mean, you can’t even pick plants from the National Parks because they’re afraid they might be planted or leave seeds in areas that they can overgrown and harm the delicate ecosystem. How do these rich guys get to do so much harm. People had to know. Just imagine the paperwork. Oh well. I’m glad he has his own private place to knock down all the trees he wants. His strength is incredible. I thought he would yank it out of the ground. His trunk deserves a medal!,

Do you have a source that says his tusks were removed? Some elephants are just genetically predisposed to having smaller tusks, or non visible tusks, and that could easily be the case with Artie.

This is why elephants are called the nature's bulldozers. In their habitats if there are no elephants the forests will be overgrown with trees and shrubs which makes the survival of other wild animals impossible.

Some African elephants are naturally tuskless. It's just a genetic quirk, like being lefthanded is for us.

I know your residents are older more mature elephants but what are you doing about the heat cycles? Are they on birth control? Or is Artie neutered?
@3dolphindoll
@3dolphindoll 18 дней назад
Males are not in with the females so no chance of breeding can occur. Musty for males occurs naturally and they are well fenced in, staff is never inside their habitats with them(protected contact method used)

Some of the fencing is to keep different elephant species separate - they have acres of land with ponds and dirt to dust themselves to roam.

Males generally live solitary lives in the wild. Occasionally some will form alliances/friendships with other males. There is hope Artie will get along with Osh, another male who is due to come to TES in the near future. So that they may form a friendship and perhaps share a habitat together. As to space TES is over 3300 acres in size, it is composed of 3 separate habitats for the males, females( separate ones for Africans and Asians. Perhaps try reading up on the Sanctuary
