Klaserie and Zindoga share a bark buffet at a fallen tree while Setombe and Khanyisa feed close by. Khanyisa and Timisa also take advantage of the branches within reach and use their trunks to strip bark for feeding on. Carer Owen captures some of the other elephants out grazing, including Tokwe, Lundi and Kumbura, followed by the bulls, Sebakwe, Mambo and Somopane.
Owen shares that Setombe appears to have stopped streaming from the temporal gland on the side of her head, which signals to us that she is starting to accept the loss of Phabeni. Typically the temporal gland secretions are due to heightened emotions in an elephant, such as excitement, stress, and sadness. Setombe has been streaming since the loss of her baby, Phabeni, the little orphan bull who passed away recently. But she is perhaps on the mend and coming to terms with the tragedy. Time certainly heals all wounds.
