The Eleusinian Mysteries (Part 2)
By Thomas Taylor
Read by Dan Attrell
This is one 18th/19th century Platonist's account of what the mysteries imparted at Eleusis were really all about. No ergot theory here, that's for sure.

Excellent as always, Dan. I, for one, am never sure just how much credence should be given to such complex interpretations of ancient customs. I mean, they're great fun, but having just (re)read Themis by Jane E. Harrison I can't help but entertain the idea that the Platonic layers of meaning invoked could well be fanciful superimpositions foisted on traditions that have their real roots in magical rites of an extremely primitive - and possibly even barbaric - nature. That being said, the similarities between the ideas expressed and those of certain other religious traditions (perhaps most notably Theravada Buddhism) are striking to say the least; so much so that it's hard not to believe that there is a common wisdom at play, and that, regardless of the ultimate origins of religious rites and ceremonies, the evolution of human thought is consistent to a point that can only be accounted for in terms of a growing understanding of our collective metaphysical predicament and our need to resolve that predicament. That the pursuit of this understanding had been retarded by centuries of materialist claptrap is, of course, a tragedy of horrendous proportions. Keep up the fantastic work.

The 1891 publication date given at the end is for the republished version being read, but the text is actually from the 18th century. Taylor published his first edition in 1790, and a second edition in 1816. I don't believe that the 1891 edition made any real revisions to the text.

Hey MH have you read Walter Otto, the German philologist? Would love to know you thoughts on his book Dionysus: Myth and Cult. In my opinion it's one of the better excavations of the cult in modern times. He also has other work on the Homer and the gods. This [all] work by Thomas Taylor is great, thank you!

Thanks! I have read it, I have a little green copy of it on my shelf here, but it has been over a decade since I last read it and I remember very little from it that hasn't bled together with all my other readings on the cult of Dionysus. I'd have to reread it to give any coherent thoughts. I do remember thinking of it in terms of an 'oldie but goodie.'

@@TheModernHermeticist Cool! He does a great job debunking the "foreign cult" theory, but I find the parts on the nature and significance of the *epiphany* in Greek culture, and why Dionysus, in particular, is "the god who appears" to be equally or more important. I don't think the importance of understanding epiphany can be overstated for anyone who takes greek religion and it's ontology seriously, but I find it's generally overlooked, if discussed at all, in mythological discussions. People should start with the "why" does each god have their unique assortment of epithets, rather than "what are they" as if they were just applied arbitrarily or out of some coincidence. The english translation in the green book is pretty rough unfortunately, but, hey, it's better than nothing lol. Cheers
