Smalley's church bells are very well known in the campanologist community as 'the heavy chime of five'! They definitely do not disappoint. The small tower of St John the Baptist has a little surprise in store for any visiting ringer. From the outside it doesn't seem like much but inside is this most magnificent chime of 5 bells. They were cast by John Taylor & Co in 1912 and the tenor weighs a whopping 40 hundredweight! They were rehung in 1999 for the millennium. The bells are rung from the ground floor via an Ellecombe chiming apparatus and they really do sing out over the village! Well worth a visit if you are passing.
My thanks to the churchwardens at St John's for their warn hospitality and the information on their wonderful chime.
