Why don't they sell flanges for PVC pipe. They sell flanges for iron pipe. What if they do sell plastic flanges. What if they just weren't located in the plumbing section, and what if they just needed a bit of modifications to work? I am your guide through these new, vast PVC realities.

How was such a simple solution so available for so long? You're so clever.

You could also use some hard setting silicone sealant to fill in all that space and give the pipe some extra grab.

Nick, how about making a flexible mold of the original steel one and cast it yourself out of resin or plastic.

Yeah, that could work. 3D Printing special PVC connectors is also a great option.

Great idea! I never considered using this, soon as I saw you whip out that light fixture, I was already saying, now, hey didn’t I think of that… however, I’ve never really needed any flanges until now. However, it’s not the first time I’ve considered some steampunk projects. Initially, I was turned off by the costs, as you mentioned. But, I first found these flanges on Amazon a couple years ago, so, I’ve been way more open to it, Then, I came up with the idea of using PVC pipe threaded on each end to help offset costs, as I want to make a few different things. I already have plenty of spare PVC, just need the metal fittings and flanges and ill see if it’ll be sturdy enough for my liking., and an inexpensive NPT pipe threader… I’ll be in business? Im planning on a doing a shelving project and prolly some custom steampunk lights! I fell for those switches that look like water faucets I plan to use PVC which I’ll thread myself and I’ll use metal flanges and fittings, then paint it when it’s finished… I may use the metal cast iron pipe, but it’s a bit pricey for as much as I’ll need. The shelf I’m planning will be holding a Dish network Joey box, maybe a pretty small game console, and some light weight decor, a few ounces at most… so, if I use metal pipe. It’ll be because I want the colors of the pipe and misc fittings to be like the bare pipe. Or , it’s found to be lacking in strength… take care and thanks! Excellent idea… now, I’ll most likeLy order metal flanges from Amazon which will fit my needs… they are right around $13 for a 10 pack… thought I’d share. Not to take away from this idea, because it’s really good. I have used my heat gun to make some PVC reducers, 1-1/2 to 1-1/4” for example, made that several years ago 2005 (I think) and it’s still in use and leak free, but it is a drain… still better than using a rubber boot for such…can’t imagine why the reducer would fail even under pressure on a residential water line…thanks for sharing, I appreciate it!

Yeah the 10 pack of cast iron flanges from Amazon are pretty much the best option, for cost, strength, and versatility. However, I'm actually working on an update to this video. Lowe's is now selling a different brand of plastic light socket. It's one single piece of plastic, and the light bulb threads are molded into the plastic, so no flimsy aluminum socket piece. And, with the threads being plastic, they are more forgiving when meshing with the threads of the threaded pipe adapters, so they thread in surprisingly well, and straight.

have you considered using PVC welding with a hot air gun and PVC rod? I am researching this.

You could work on manufacturing these, form fitted for PVC work, and sell them in hardware stores for everyone!

I needed to watch this video. I am going to use a piece of plywood, cut out the shape of a spaceship, paint it and put it in my yard for next Halloween. I was trying to figure out how to attach 'legs' aka supports to the back of the UFO. I will be using your idea. Thank you for posting! By the way, are you wearing guns????

Awesome! I've actually been meaning to make a follow up to this video. Lowe's (at least my Lowe's) is selling a different brand of plastic light socket, it's all plastic, so there's no metal bit to remove. And it turns out that a 3/4 inch PVC threaded adapter, fits into it perfectly. The brand is EATON. Ha, no not guns, it's a "pocket holster" you can hold stuff like your wallet and phone in it.

@@IamNickDClements Hi and Happy New Year Nick! I will have to check out the all-plastic light socket. I looked on Amazon and found lots of metal flanges and am amazed at the low prices. However like you, I don't want to use metal. If and when I create my alien spaceship and creatures I will do a video and send you the link. It shouldn't take too long to create everything. I already have a list of materials.

Instead of a heat gun to enlarge the pipe, wrap electrical tape around the pipe to increase its diameter.

I have a better idea. Cut a disc the size of the flange you want and drill a small hole in the center the size of a tapered punch. Clamp the disk between two boards with a hole the size of your pipe plus allowance for the thickness of the plastic flange. Put those in the oven at 330 degrees to soften and then use the taper punch to enlarge the hole then insert your pipe and allow to cool. Now you have a joint you can glue or hot air weld it together.

I am so sorry I just read my comment and it was all messed up what I was trying to say can you take the p v c piping and add your own I'm trying to say the word but you know how they take a boat and they add the grooves into it that is what I'm trying to say but I can't figure out the word that you but a lot of times you see it when they put it in mail pipes and in some cases like bolts and screws where they call it that way you'll be able to screw it in does a machine I saw years ago that makes grooves onto pipes I'm so sorry I can't get the word out I know what I seen but it was back in 2011 when I saw it since that time I saw a million videos so it started going through all those extreme I was trying to figure out can you create your own help me out but can't think of the word
