** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
The sudoku world is full of some of the planet's most exceptional brains. But even in such elite company, Jay Dyer and her puzzles still shine incredibly brightly. Tonight's sudoku, Emergence, is her latest and has a 5* difficulty rating. Oh and it's also been described as just about the best region sum sudoku ever...
Play the puzzle at the link below:
sudokupad.app/n8GBhrHDhf
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply. The 3x3 box borders divide a blue line into segments. The sum of the digits along each segment is the same for that line. Different lines may have different segment sums. Eg r4c7+r4c8 = r1c6+r2c6+r3c6 = r1c7+r2c8+r3c9+r3c8

Thanks for the solve! I'm glad I got to see you solve this one; with the number of different ways the clues interacted, I was curious if people would find different paths through it as a result. The way I looked at the break-in was something you touched upon later: one of the red/yellow dominoes has to appear in its entirety in the purple quintuple, along with three more digits. That limits the dominoes to being 11 at most, and the other three digits (which include r4c16) summing to at most 7. Other than that, you had the logic pretty much as I had looked at it.

You managed to be phenomenally innovative even using a *single* and *widely used* variant constraint. 👏👏👏👏👏 Thank you for explaining your intended logic for the break-in. Very interesting. It is so difficult to imagine how a human mind can construct such a magic puzzle. I could imagine someone designing a puzzle with the same magic break-in logic, but you were ridiculously magic up to the end❗ Every single line did magic❗ *Memeristor,* we need another interview with *Jay,* please.

I am glad to hear there were other paths, because after the break in, I certainly went about it differently to Simon, and probably far less optimally. A great puzzle with a challenging break in and a lot of plate spinning. Loved it.

Jay does this thing in her puzzles consistently in which each piece is highly interactive with the other pieces. Here, each of the region sums feels highly dependent on the others, but then they also each have magnificent internal logic of their own. Solving this as Simon has is incredible; he's excellent at finding one deduction, applying it to the next, and so on, until the picture becomes clearer. And setting it is amazing too! It must be like seeing a whole game of chess and knowing how it's going to play out. What a mind. Jay is a genius.

I finished in 142 minutes. This puzzle is a work of art. Jay has done it again. While it was hard, I didn't feel lost or bogged down at all. Everything felt very natural in its flow. I, especially, liked the part where 4 and 5 were locked into the lines in row 4, leaving r4c1 without a 5. This, combined with no 5 belonging in column 1 in box 7, leads to the disambiguation of the line in box 1, giving it a value of 11 since 5 must now belong on it. This puzzle was full of cool tricks like that. It is just incredible construction. I don't know how Jay keeps doing this. She creates such clean puzzles that are also fun to solve. One of my favorites. Great Puzzle!

Simon missed a really elegant deduction at 28:30. The digits in row 4 box 6 that are on the region sum line either add up to 11 or include the green digit, since the pair adding up to 11 that goes unused in the yellow region must show up somewhere in row 4. If they add up to 11, the only way to make it work on the segment of the line in box 2 is if it was 128. However, that would make the grey digit in box 5 3 and the red digit would have to be 8, ruling out a legitimate way to add up to 11 on that specific region. Thus, the green digit has to be on the region sum line in box 6.

As I have already pointed out before, I think *redundant notation* makes the grid messy, reducing its readability. E.g., @41:15, white-flashed red and green became redundant and deleting them would have noticeably enhanced *video quality.* Typically, Simon can deal with it very well, so he does not need to clear the grid. I suspect he might be even slowed down if he did it systematically. However, I am talking about video quality, not about Simon's personal preferences.

people who wonder "i have subscribed to channel X, so why am i not seeing their new videos at the top of my feed?" ... it's because you have subscribed to TEN (or 100) channels. no more than HALF of those videos get TOP priority. more accurately, maybe 3/4 of your TOP priority recommendations are completely random (for you). the recommendations are HEAVILY weighted towards the TYPE of things you have been watching recently. and admit it, nobody in their right mind is going to scroll down more than 20 recommendations. therefore, MOST of the videos that you are looking for will never be offered to you. therefore, you have to go looking for those videos manually.

When I tried this puzzle and made little progress (but saw that Simon cracked it in under an hour), I assumed it was some weird SET trick. But no, "just" clamped sums propagating around the grid. That's the sort of thing I was trying, but unllike Simon I'm almost incapable of remembering what ranges I've calculated for segments while I'm looking elsewhere (and there isn't a good way to notate them in the software). So this sort of solve is extremely hard for me.

you could have forced the blue region sum not to be a blue pair at 34:35 because it would force the other region to be at minimum a 3+4+5+6=18, which would be impossible to place on the 2-cell region sum in box 1.
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 21 день назад

@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 20 дней назад
@@jonathanbarz9898I'm not too sure why you would refer to that particular region sum line in box 6 as "the blue region sum", but your comment makes more sense to me now. Thank you. So the "other region sum line" would be referring to box 2. I can see why this would then be a minimum of 18. The total for box 2 is 45, take off the blue pair total (11) and the maximum for the other two cells (7+9=16 (r2c4 sees an 8,9 pair)), and you get 45-11-16=18. I'm not sure where you're getting 3+4+5+6 from, though? What's preventing 1 or 2 from appearing on the other line? I was trying to see a reason this was forced and not coming up with anything. Isn't it just a coincidence that 18=3+4+5+6? Edit: And seconds after I post, I see it. There's a red digit (8 or 9) on the region sum line down c6 in box 2! To make that sum to 11 it would have to be 8+1+2. Sorry for being slow. Edit 2: It would also have been sensible for me to actually play that section of the video that you gave a timestamp for, since that being 8+1+2 is exactly what Simon's talking about. I was just staring at the grid position in the paused video, like a numpty-man. 😂

@JaymanOttawa, it is a problem for me, even if you don’t care. In fact, in all the recent puzzles by Jay Dyer, I have seen in the comments that she is generally alluded to as a he, perhaps because everything logical or mathematical tends to be asociated with men by default?
