I was just a baby and i have to say im happy about that like damn it was like watching it through a potato filmed by a potato it was like witnessing the Dark ages
I remember this game like it was yesterday. I especially remember players having to help Smith up after each play in overtime. He carried the load with a separated shoulder. Dallas needed this win to lock up home field throughout the playoffs and #22 put the offense on his back. John Madden never visited locker rooms after games but on this day he went down and found Smith and told him this was the gutsiest performance he’d ever seen.
I think this was the game that truly made me fall in love with Emmitt Smith and The Dallas Cowboys. I'll always remember this game where he gave everything he had literally with 1 arm!!!!!
Wow... the players in this game! Aikman, Smith, Irvin, Haley, Taylor in HOF... Dan Reeves (coached in 4 Super Bowls), Jimmy Johnson (National Championship and 2 Super Bowls). Phil Simms in last regular season game. Howard Cross would play in Super Bowl XXV and XXXV. Armstead and Strahan (rookie this season but did not play in this game, eventual HOF) would lead Giants to playoffs in ‘97 and to Super Bowl XXXV. Strahan of course, would team with Eli Manning to win XLII. LT with last regular season sack in historic and legendary career. Moose, Novacek, McCaffrey, Meggett, Hampton, Jumbo... all pro bowlers. And of course, the legends of Pat Summerall and John Madden on CBS. Wow! Historic game.
@@mamzersdream1 I don't know what crawled up your butt but instead of hurling an insult maybe you could tell me what I said that deserves a "grow up".?
They Cowboys is my Team, and I am very fond of Hershell, and Emitt Smith, but Barry Sanders is way better, explosive, smart, and has more of the wiggle and wet bass effect to break tackles.... in a sense quicker, I saw several plays here where defensive backs caught up to Emitt very quickly, that was not so evident with Barry Sanders.
@@MiguelTiempos the fact that Sanders had better physical tools but Emmitt Smith had more yards, touchdowns, and success just proves Emmitt was the better back all around! Sanders was genetically gifted the physical talent he had, Emmitt succeeded on will and skill as a runner, blocker, and receiver. Sanders played on some really good Lions teams but he disappeared in the playoffs against better competition. Emmitt in the other hand played great against the best the NFL had to offer in his division and in the playoffs.
Barry had better moves and there were backs with more speed but Emmitt was as tough as they come, rarely fumbled, picked up blitzes, caught passes out of the backfield and was a warrior - someone you want to go to war with every week.
Barry and Emmitt owned the 90s. I'm a Detroit native so I'm rolling with Barry but Emmitt was a straight beast and a hell of a all around running back.
Barry was a great pure runner, the Gale Sayers of my generation. To me the best 3 RB's that come to mind are Jim Brown, Walter Payton, and Emmitt Smith, because as well as they carried the ball, they also excelled in pass protection, and catching the ball out of the backfield. Honorable mention to Marshall Faulk, the Lenny Moore of my generation, who could run precise WR routes and could go 80 on you at anytime.
Wait, you're 60 years old, and you missed out on 20 years of the Patriots dominating the national football league? The Patriots that never lost to the cowboys? The Patriots that had two 22-game win streaks? A 16-0 regular season? 6 super bowls! You can thank your lucky stars they were not around on the 90s, or you would not have these false memories! Don't let your nostalgia blind you!
@@brentmichael4770patriots had a better overall run but the 92&93 cowboys were better than any team the patriots had including that 07 team that lost Super Bowl. Their defense was too old n would have gotten battered in the running game vs Dallas.
All of football was better before free agency. This was like the last year when teams were really teams and it took years to build a program. When you could have hall of fame players on the bench because some teams were so good at deep and positions. Football will never be the same as it was back then.
@@lawrence5039Emmitt was every bit as tough as Riggins, but Riggins was the size of a small offense guard lol! It was unreal watching the Diesel run over, through, and around people. I was a Cowboys fan, so of course I was obligated to hate him as much as he hated Dallas lol, but I loved his running style.
There are points in the game when you can look at Emmitt and tell that he's hoping nobody hits his right shoulder. He still didn't shy away from contact, though.
He had a great voice but his super bowl call for the end of the first Patriots superbowl win was absolutely terrible. Like he had no idea what that game winning kick meant.
Rob Johnson good point . Probably more just missing an earlier time . But Pat S was a great announcer . The team of Joe Buck and Aikman is great , but not quite on the level of Summerall and Madden in terms of bringing life to the game
Man...I still remember my uncle (who is 6’5) jumping up and hitting his head on the drop ceiling about 3 times in a row after the Giants recovered that muffed punt, while yelling in pure excitement. Whole house was going wild in that second half. The build up to that game all week made it feel like the biggest thing ever to me at the time. Tough loss, but a heck of a football game.
Madden pointed out that both Backs gained over a hundred yards, which is rare. Both Backs, both teams came to Ball. Offenses & Defenses on both teams came to play.. . Big D prevailing. Great rivalry in the 90s.
I was blessed to watch two of the more indelible games in my NFL childhood on this day. The first was this all time regular season classic. The second was the last signature regular season win of the Los Angeles Raiders, who came back from 30-13 down to the Broncos to win 33-30 and make the playoffs. But Emmitt absolutely earned the MVP with this performance. The last vestiges of what the NFL was for me as a kid, with Madden and Summerall calling a physical NFC game on CBS.
I would go to these games with my pop who had season tickets & they were the greatest days of my life growing up! How I miss these days & would give anything for one more live game with him
13:01 "They say Emmitt Smith makes too much money... You get under those shoulder pads and tell me who makes too much money! This is what great football players get paid a lot of money for." What an epic performance! This is when Emmitt transcended all other backs of his time and became an all time great! He had more heart than any of them. What a legend!
I was a sophomore in college in Pittsburgh and this game was blacked out!! Of course, my friend who was living in DC, who hated the Cowboys praised Emmitt Smith and said he gained a new respect for him.
Keep your Chiefs-Rams video game scores all day. Cowboys-Giants dueling it out for every point with Madden and Summerall calling... that's the best regular season game of all time.
Most "fans" only care about offensive plays because these plays are easy to understand. Defensive plays, especially when it is not a turnover, take much more experience to understand why it is a great play.
I have this game on VHS. Other than our first championship win over San Francisco, this is by far the best cowboys game I've ever seen. Emmitt after holding out the first 2 games not only won the rushing title but also NFL player of the year. Bill Parcel and Chad Gailey are the only coaches that came close to Jimmy Johnson talent. What a team we had back then...
Yeah… They literally had to pass a rule called the Emmitt Smith rule which prevented you from pulling your helmet off and celebrating on the field. Deion sanders played at the time you’re talking about. The Super Bowl shuffle was over a half a decade old already. Get out of here with “no showboating.” Especially in a game that features Michael freaking Irvin.
@@evilsWa Deion didn't even come to the Dallas Cowboys until 95. In 93 Jimmy Johnson didn't play that showboating crap. And when they made that rule it was later in his career. 96 was when Smith and Irving was hit with the new rule in Arizona
@@pushaman07 Dawg, Jimmy Johnson PROMOTED showboating! He coached Mike Irvin in college! What is this hatred you people have against guys having fun? It's enterfuckingtainment! I bet you like pitchers throwing at batters if they take too long to run the bases after a homer...
To me this was the end of the rivalry until Eli and Romo came along in relation to longevity and the importance of games between the two teams. This was LT and Simms last game playing against them and Carl Banks was gone the year before. Giants just weren’t the same for a few seasons and then when the Giants became relevant again, the Cowboys weren’t the same team.
Emmitt was a FORCE in this game--showing everyone that he was not only skilled, but physically and mentally tough! But I also found it amusing to hear the "Moose" call in NY.
You can tell Emmitt was hurt in this footage, but where are the myriad times his lineman popped his shoulder back in place between plays? They did it several times right out on the field so Emmitt wouldn't have to miss a down. Tough? YES! Video? No!
For a running back this is the ultimate triple crown. Winning the rushing title, winning the NFL MVP, and then winning the Super Bowl MVP. Emmitt did all of that. Even as great as Terrell Davis was for those 4 years, he never accomplished that triple crown.
Nice production job as usual. Interesting to compare the minimalist graphic usage from 1993 vs. the 'information overload' of the current graphics normality.
THE Greatest Of All Time!!! 22!! 220+ All-Purpose Yards on 1 arm!!! And won MVP!!! (Regular Season & Super Bowl) Wasn't Even His Best Season!!! Top That!!!
I’ll never forget this game as long as I live. I was in the Navy in Brunswick, Maine watching it from my berthing while part of a P3 Squadron (VP-11). I was a nervous reck watching that game.
I watched this game in real time. The day i fully fell in love with #22. I dont care what ppl say....Emmitt Smith is the GREATEST RUNNING BACK OF ALL TIME... Yes I've seen Barry and i love him and Emmitt battles but im not trading Emmitts tough ass for NOBODY....if only new all the things tht was on the line THAT DAY.
Want the ESSENCE of this game? @12:37 Summerall with the call: "Here's Emmitt Smith......Eeeeemitt Smiiith,......... Smith HAMMERS to the 25." Man with a broken shoulder, is blasting, POWERING inside for guts yardage. Guts. The greatest offensive performance Ive ever seen, and it was such a money situation! Smith covered himself in glory on this day, his SIGNATURE game engraved in gold. THIS is football, like it ought to be.
From a person who’s suffered from multiple shoulder separations (both shoulders) and being a fan of the Cowboys, I always come back to this game for motivation. Especially after I’ve had them repaired surgically. DC4L!
This is the definitive Emmitt Smith game. Sure, there were other games where he gained more yards and had longer runs, but if someone asked me "Who was Emmitt Smith?", I'd show them this game.
Madden came out of the booth and went down to the locker room and told Emmitt this was the greatest game he had ever seen! Totally the highest praise comin from a coach and probably one the best to do it in the booth
They always credit that o-line...the one that didn't make Derrick Lassic or Lincoln Coleman or Tommie Agee or Curvin Richards 4 ypc rushers. None of his backups from 1992-1994 averaged 4 yards a carry, but Emmitt was 'carried' by his o-line. If that was the case, his holdout would've blown up in his face and Dallas would've rolled to the title in 1993 without him. Dude was the heart and soul of that entire team.
Hard fought game, even though the big dawgs of the nfc East were now the Cowboys, Mark Tuinei, Jim Jeffcoat, Bill Bates, Michael Irvin, Ken Norton, Kevin Gogan, Nate Newton, and Bill Bates were all holdovers from the Landry era. Interesting seeing them play against what was left from the Parcells era players, such as Lawrence Taylor, Phil Simms, Howard Cross, Dave Meggett, Rodney Hampton, Erik Howard, Bart Oates, Jumbo Elliot, etc.
Remember the Cowboy Giant game when the first time Emmit touched the ball he went for a 65 yard TD? I think it was a Monday night game as well. I was in my early to mid 20's back then. I loved the NFL. I didn't even watch the Super Bowl yesterday, only watch college now. I love Auburn Tigers and don't care about anything else....
I can recall listening to the game on the radio and it was exciting ! This was before NFL Sunday Ticket and at that time that wasn't a National game on CBS so it was not televised in our area.
I don't think a single regular season game deserved to be on the NFL Top 100 games list. This game is a rare exception. It had everything. Easily a Top 50 game of all time.
This is the year that Emmitt had to hold out the first 2 games to get a fair contract.. Definitely proved he was worth every penny of the new contract and more.
This is why Smith is the best back to ever play. With a grade 3 spearated shoulder (cant get any worse) he ran for 160+ yards and a couple TD's. Theres no RB ive seen do that. I dont think ive ever seen a RB play with a separated shoulder much less rush for 160+. Barry was faster and more shifty but he couldnt and wouldnt do that for his team.
What a tremendous game!!!! The Giants defense played about as hard as a unit can play. This was the great Lawrence Taylor's last game as a professional before he retired, and he made an impact, too!! I'd be remiss without mentioning Emmit Smith and the great impact he had on this game - particularly in the first half, building Dallas' lead up to 13 - 0 at halftime - he really ran with some reckless abandon, getting crucial yards time after time!! Pat Summerall and John Madden apply the cherry on top as the outstanding broadcaster and analyst duo for the football fan at home. It doesn't get much better than this as an NFL classic!!!
