Quite possibly the best trio of games between the same two teams in the history of the NFL. 92-94. Plus it was the NFC championship all games no less. Legendary highlights.
the AFC was so stagnant and no team posed a threat especially in that window of the Bills 3rd Super Bowl (Jan 1993) up to the Patriots in Jan 1997.....it was just bad. They would always put the AFC Championship game on at 1PM that Sunday because everyone knew it was the Round Robin Consolation game.
Legendary RT Erik Williams got injured in a car accident that year and an inexperienced Larry Allen played in his place on a bad ankle. Made a huge difference in that game imo. With the early turnovers though, Dallas really screwed themselves, but they still made a great game out of it. Emmitt had the bad wheel too I believe. I think with an intact, healthy lineup, Dallas was a better team, but you gotta give it to the Niners, it really came together for them that year.
Eh, as short as it was I enjoyed the Enberg/Trumpy pairing best if only because Trumpy was always perpetually grumpy LOL. Truth be told the Enberg/Olsen pairing was excellent.
It was the Super Bowl for 3 years straight. Actually, between1985-1996, the NFC championship was effectively the league championship game. The NFC dominated.
@@DrePeezy415 we were clearly overrated, we hadn't beat anybody as good as the niners all season long, Patriots were the closest thing and they weren't as good as the niners, we benefited from a easy schedule and then got exposed by a real team
Young really showed me something with that throw to Rice at the end of the first half. Cowboys were coming back strong and that play broke their momentum. Just a great throw!
Dallas showed me in this game even in a loss how good they were, they never quit, fought hard all the way to the end against a very good 49rs team that year ...
funkyflights great effort, indeed. And many often forget that the ‘94 Dallas Cowboys had lost 5 starters (4 being pro bowlers) from the previous year’s championship team to free agency. Pro bowl tackle Erik Williams had also been lost for the season, due to injury. Most importantly, the Cowboys were without former head coach Jimmy Johnson and offensive coordinator Norv Turner, too. All while the 49ers loaded their team.
dallas still outplayed SF except for the first 5 minutes of the game. Even with that, if the refs make the correct pass interference call, dallas wins.
Chris Warren only three Dynasty in NFL history the 70s Pittsburgh Steelers the 80s San Francisco 49ers and the early 90s Dallas Cowboys 1970 through 1993 era
Especially considering the horrible field conditions, Young's bad neck/back (Was accidentally hit by Richard Dent in practice), the opponent, etc. TOTALLY AGREE!
the TD pass seconds before halftime shouldn't have happened because they called an absolute bogus PI against Dallas after stopping the niners on third and long giving them a first down and then a TD. It was a simple hand check, and then they don't call a PI on Deon Sanders at the end. Biased officiating all the way.
I was at that game in 94 . Used to make yearly trips to sf for games . Sometimes playoffs . And this is one of a few I went to . Thx to my ticket connection Jerry lami . Sec 132 of the old candle stick park ! I will forever remember that place as well .
Looking back on it a huge part of me watching the NFL was to listen to John Madden and Pat Summerall commentate. To me JM is the best color commentator in the history of the game. Knowledge, passion and respect for the game. That is both John Madden and Pat Summerall.
It may surprise the casual fan to know that this is the game both Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin have consistently said they're the most proud of, because even though the Cowboys lost and even though they played arguably their worst seven minutes of football at the start, they delivered an absolutely gutsy performance for the remainder of the game.
And this is the most memorable championship game too. Nobody remember the 95 nfccg. As good as the first meeting between the two teams in '92 was, ('93 nfccg was forgettable) it wasn't as hyped as this '94 nfcc game was. It was even dubbed "The Real Superbowl". Lol!
ZhangtheGreat they could’ve had a chance to win this game if the ref calls the pass interference on sanders. I love Deion but that should’ve been called.
@@demetriusreynolds8178 Meh, that call could've gone either way and shouldn't be singled out as the reason the Cowboys lost. Had they played better in the first seven minutes, they wouldn't have had to rely on a single call to have a chance to win.
If The Steelers werent snake bitten by Bill Cowher's AWFUL playoff coaching and utter fear of doing anything to try and win, the game would have been PIT vs SF and I think would have been MUCH better
The 49ers wore these uniforms in only one season - 1994. They won the Super Bowl that year, and have never worn them again. This year they are finally doing a throwback!
L-Train 45 other teams only wore them for a few games. The 49ers were the only team to make them the primary (they petitioned the league) and were the only team to wear them in the playoffs and super bowl. The only other team that could have worn a jersey that started the year as an alternate in the Super Bowl (you aren’t normally allowed to wear alternates in the SB) is the 2012 Jaguars who also petitioned the league midseason to make their alternates their primaries
In 96 they changed the jerseys to a modern version with gold outline and black shadow on the numbers. That's why they didnt go back to them because inspired the new jerseys. But the jerseys were replicas of the ones they wore in the 50s except they didnt have the matching helmets.
ESPN2 once voted this game as the most anticipated non-Super Bowl playoff game of all time. Based on the point differential formula Dallas's expected Win total was 12.3 and San Francisco's was 12.5. These two teams were evenly matched. The game featured a whopping 21 combined Pro Bowlers and an even more whopping 10 combined future Hall of Famers. San Francisco would go up 21-0 within 7 minutes and then Dallas would outscore them 28-17 the rest of the way.
The game never got closer than 10. The 49ers scored before the half to make it 31-14. Then the cowboys scored first in the 3rd then the 49ers scored and that put them up 38-21 scoring at will on Dallas. Then they chose to sit on the ball for the rest of the game. Listening to aikman irvin or other ex cowboys talk about this game and you get the false narrative that they were close to coming back but they never were. The 49ers owned the cowboys this season.
@@anthonyharp7696 B.S. COWBOYS handed them the game in the first quarter. Those 3 turnovers killed Dallas early. And then 2 B.S. calls on Dallas. Dallas was the better team easy..
@@terrycrotts2522lmao San Francisco was the class of the league all year. Dallas scored off a turnover early in the 3rd quarter, so spare me the excuses. TOs are part of the game. So are penalties. Irvin was pushing off all game.
@@anthonyharp7696 Totally agree. It was an enjoyable game, but Dallas never seriously threatened. The 1995 game between Dallas and Green Bay was more of a nailbiter.
The NFL is much better when the Dolphins, Steelers, Raiders, Cowboys, Vikings and Rams are all division winners. Look at the 70's. Those 6 teams totaled 17 Super Bowl appearances.
Damn Ricky Waters was a beast. I remember watching one game from those days where he had like 6 touchdowns or something ridiculous. Can't believe he doesn't get brought up more in conversations about running backs
He's in the 10,000 yard club, good for 24th all time. In his next to last year he gained 1,242 yds, averaging 4.5 per carry for Seattle! HOF semi-finalist in 2022. NFL network ranked him in the top 10 players not in. So he might get in some day.
I DONT NECESSARILY AGREE WITH THAT COMMENT ABOUT HIS DECISION MAKING...TROY WAS A GUY WITH A LOT OF CONFIDENCE ABOUT WHAT HE WAS DOING AND WHAT HE WAS ABOUT TO DO....AND I THINK HE THOUGHT HIS GUYS WERE ON THE SAME PAGE...DANM I MISS THIS TEAM!!!
Even with Jimmy gone and everything that happened in thast game. Losing Erik Williams the best tackle in football that season may have been ther biggest reason for the loss. A rookie named Larry Allen future hall of famer, played right tackle on a severely injured ankle. Basically playing on one leg. He got beat every other snap. Let it be known he never got beat like that ever again.
No, it was the two interference calls that were NOT made on Deion - one before the missed field goal in the first half and the one with just over 6 minutes left in the game.
This was Steve Young and the 49ers' day, but holy cow Troy Aikman wasn't going down without a fight! He was just winging it all over and completing them, wow. Good game, good times.
It might be the greatest non SB game ever played. Legendary statement performances in this one. Obvious Irvin proved he’s a big game WR, even in adverse circumstances. Deion led to SF’s first score because Aikman threw into coverage, which exactly what SF wanted. ✅. He gives up a key catch to Irvin on a comeback route, but adjusts perfectly in the second half on Irvin comeback routes. ✅. Then he gets a key Int and has the key pass breakup in the second half. ✅. When you watch the entire game you see Dallas neglecting Smith in the 1st half for dink & dunk short passes, hoping to lure Deion to sleep / wear him down. ✅. I give him the game ball off of X’s & O’s dominance SF’s front seven did a great job and getting to the QB against one the best O Lines ever. Steve Young and Rice could easily been seen as an afterthought because this game was THAT good.
Excuses, excuses....take IT like the WOMAN that YOU are and stop making excuses just those MARIKONES from Texas.....xexexexexe.....Alvin Harper, Nate Newton.....I love to see ALL of YOU suffer !!
Dresta tha Gangsta 1984 team was great too. didnt dominate the playoffs like the 89 team did but capped it off 18-1 with a great sb performance against a great miami team that year. you will never see a post season like the 89 team again. 126-26. montana stats- 65 of 83 for 800 yds. 9.4 avg. att. 78% comp and 147.6 rating.
When you see the Young touchdown pass to Rice before halftime through the lens of NFL Films you realize that is one of the greatest looking touchdown passes ever thrown. Go 49ers!
Young and Aikman played the game of their lives. Two of the best head to head. As a 49ers fan still remember that game like it was yesterday. 49ers empire for life 💯
Out of all the "running" QB's, Young is by far the best. Never looked to run first, good in the pocket, accurate at all levels of the D. Plus not afraid to put his head down and squeak out critical extra yardage when it's crunch time!
Any day you beat the Cowboys is a good day, but this was one of the most memorable 49er wins of my lifetime.. The Niners/Cowboys is one of the NFL's greatest historical rivalries..
This game is THE game of my life as a 49ers fan! Finally kicked their ass after the previous years and won our 5th superbowl. The defense jumped out and stayed on them all game, Jerry Rice's legendary TD seconds before half time to give them no chance, and Steve Young, the warrior, was out playing with a vengence. This game was the superbowl lol. I was so proud of all of them and happy and cried almost:) 49ers for life!
Have fun celebrating your mercenary team. Your franchise sold your soul to the devil to win the SB. Haven't won one since. After 94 GB owned your ass and after 99 ya sucked all the way until 2011, when your BACKUP RETURNER, muffed all the kicks against NYG. And interestingly enough, against Baltimore in the SB, I will admit that J. Smith held Crabtree. But maybe that was karma for the no call on Deion. Hahaha then good ole Colin Kaepernick throws an int to ET3 on a potential game winning drive. Still stings. Told ya, you sold the farm to win one more was it really worth it? Now I can't really talk becuase we did the same thing in 95.
@@jackduncan5442 Mercenary team? WTF are you talking about? You lot signed Deion the following season, Mr Mercenary! The bulk of the 9er team was drafted, and everyone had to work under the cap. You lot have not had much success lately, so all ye do is cry about Deion holding , after 26 years, thats all ye got? Oh and by the way, 9ERS are in the superbowl this year
Jimmy as the Head Coach in 1994. Erik Williams never drunk drives his car into a retaining wall, Larry Allen is Rookie of the year at RG, and Dallas entire O line is in the pro Bowl destroying every front 7 in their path. Jimmy NEVER cuts Jimmy Smith who feasts in the slot. Dallas has BY FAR THE BEST OFFENSE IN THE LEAGUE. TRIPLETS, Moose, Jay, Harper, Jimmy Smith and the BEST O LINE EVER. UNSTOPPABLE.
JIMMY NEVER LETS KEN NORTON GO TO SF. HE NEVER DRAFTS CRAPPY CARVER AND DRAFTS SECONDARY AND D LINE DEPTH. DALLAS HAS BY FAR THE BEST AND FASTEST DEFENSE IN THE LEAGUE. DOMINANT FRONT 4 ELITE LINEBACKERS AND SHUTDOWN SECONDARY.
I was 14 years old and cried my eyes out when the Cowboys went down 21-0. I was devastated when they lost, but was so proud of that team, the way they didn't fold and fought back until the end. That no-call Pass Interference by Deion on Michael was the nail in the coffin! Otherwise, I believe, the Cowboys win that game! But nevertheless, this was my favorite time in NFL history. These weren't mere athletes on the field, these were titans. The early-mid 90's was the true Golden Era in NFL History - Aikman, Young, Kelly, Favre, Elway, Moon, Montana, Emmitt, Barry, Irvin, Rice, Reed, Lofton, Rison, Sharpe, and just on and on and on.
I remember this game had me heated in 94. Time heals because now I can atleast enjoy how hard we fought back till the end. A valiant effort for sure. Them o'l 49ers became the number 1 rival in my book after that epic 90's struggle where we came up short. Great game.
I know this may not make you feel better, but I don't know of a single football fan who saw this game and thought of Dallas as losers. They played their heart out until the last play. This was one of the best losing efforts in NFL history, and the _de facto_ Super Bowl that year. Everyone knows Dallas would have beat San Diego by about the same score SF did.
@@aj_narasimhanNo Dallas should NOT have won that game. Everyone knows San Francisco was due to beat those damn Cowboys after two frustrating losses in the NFC championship game prior to this. They were almost equally matched but I always felt the niners were the better team. It was Steve Young and the Niners' day. They outplayed those cowboys and you know it.
"They can double him(Irvin) but they still can't cover him." Goddamn Summeral was great. Madden n Summeral best footbal announcers ever. Bar none. Keith Jackson in cfb
I wouldn't say the best but the most anticipated matchup of all time. Everybody knew this was gonna be the game. We argued about this everyday in school b4 this game
This 49ers team is one of the best ever put together, possibly the best period. I would like their chances against any of the legendary defensive teams because of their passing scheme and the fact that they were also loaded with talent on defense. This highlight reel is fun in a way that the 85 Bears were fun against mediocre teams like Atlanta, but this is also a really stacked Dallas team that wins the Super Bowl in most years. They were just overwhelmed here.
1989 was better, maybe the best team in NFL history, ever. The 1984 team was next or equal to 1993, as they had a stout pass defense as well (ask Dan Marino).
Cowboys Spotted 49ers 3 scores. Battled back to make it a close game. Was one of the best Cowboy games of all time. The uniforms also getting dirty. Classic football!
Man, this game feels epic! I was old enough for this one but kind of out of the NFL at the time (college overseas). Great to see it now! The names, the legends, the talent!
This was the peak of the NFL in my opinion, too many rules these days but I do respect they are trying to keep the players safe, but it took a lot out of the game when you cant make a good hit without a flag anymore.
It was "lit" because THE BEST HC IN THE LEAGUE JIMMY JOHNSON WAS FIRED. With Jimmy at the helm, they have Erik Williams at RT, Larry Allen is Rookie of year at RG, Dallas ENTIRE O LINE IS IN THE PRO BOWL, and Jimmy NEVER cuts Jimmy Smith. Whi feasts in the slot and Dallas has BY FAR THE BEST OFFENSE IN THE LEAGUE. TRIPLETS, Moose, Jay, Harp, Jimmy Smtih and the GREATEST O LINE EVER.
Jimmy NEVER EVER let's Ken Norton sign with San Francisco. Kenny left Dallas AFTER JIMMY WAS FIRED. Jimmy also NEVER drafts SHITTY SHANTE CARVER, AND GIFTS SF FLOYD AND DRAKEFORD. Instead he drafts solid D line and secondary depth. Dallas has BY FAR the best defense in the league. Swarming D line best linebacking Core for a decade and SHUTDOWN secondary.
Don't forget last year......and actually don't forget yesterday ! Philly will KICK YOUR ASS AGAIN.....like the BIATCHHHHEEEESSSSS that you are ! Ante gamisou MALAKA and I hope CANCER on ALL COWHICK Fans !
Awe...the good old days for me & my fellow Cowboys fans. We lost this game but put up a good fight. We beat the 49ers the previous 2 years. Hats off to two great teams.
Remember watching this, what a battle between Irvin and Deion. Deion got the better of it, and Irvin had his moments. So many hall of famers on both rosters.
Love how this is edited. Especially since it sounds just like the Madden games of old in which you got sound bites from both these legends & the sound bites are pretty consistent with the ones used.
@@stebbi2019 Thank you for taking the time to answer and entertain me ! That looks like your wife or retarded mother ! xexexe....I love the fact that you took the time to answer a lunatic's post ! Who is the idiot now ?? JACKASS !! UP YOURS DALLAS !!
As a cowboy fan I don't have faith in Dallas. We have sucked ever since the last superbowl. Atleast ya made it again and almost one it. Maybe this year ya can pull it off. This year sf is a contendor for sure.
I was gonna say the exact same thing. Most people don't realize the Niners took care of business against the Cowboys during the regular season too, and did it somewhat handily.
@@redriderbbgun8018 "Handily" it was 7-7 at the start if the 4th qtr and if they wouldn't of had those disastrous turnovers they would have probably won.
@@christopherstrebeck8047 I'm gonna tear apart this little fantasy of yours. Jimmy Johnson, Dallas head coach in 1994, Dallas goes 14-2 easily and Embarrasses San Francisco and 3 peats. If you want to argue, with me it will be my pleasure.
Steve Young of the 90's reminds me of another southpaw in the Bay area from the 70's Kenny Stabler. Stabler lost 2 of 3 AFC Championship games to Pittsburgh....Young lost 2 of 3 NFC Championship games to the Cowboys. Young also lost the 1997 NFC Championship game to the Packers. Stabler had lost the 1973 AFC Championship game to the Dolphins, and lost the 1977 AFC Championship game to the Broncos.
