I remember standing on the street below the Empire State Building and looking up at its cloud covered height. That day, my parents were taking us kids to see my dad's mother. I recalling taking the train from New Jersey to New York City, but besides looking up at the building and visiting my grandmother and step-grandfather, I don't really remember much else about the day. Oh, I do kind of remember there was a tiny, slow elevator in her building. Many years later my mother and sister stood looking up at the building my grandmother lived in. It was now condemned, but Mom pointed out the things outside the apartment that Neil had put in to hang plants were still there, 30 years later.

I've lived in New York City my entire life and y'all have taught me more about my own city in these past few weeks than I've learned in 36 years. Keep up the excellent work everyone 💙 *Edit to ask* Maybe you can do the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan? The British Museum video was *chef's kiss* so why not try your hand at my favorite museum? Pretty please?

I'm probably one of the few persons that happenned to come across it by chance, not expecting to see this to this day truly spectacular view after emerging from the undergrounds of Penn Station where I had to change to Toronto after the car we had been travelling by across Eastern US broke down near Washington. It was early, sunny Spetember Sunday morning, the building was still in its original dark grey, mystic and somewhat uncanny solemn vibration emanating from its bulk.

Nice read, Karl! Just a note, the script often called the building “The Empire State”, which is actually the state’s nickname, and thus the building’s namesake. Not a big deal; just being nitpicky. BTW, love business anteater- super cute!

Another tib bit about the Chyrstal Building was it tricked the other building to be the tallest in the world. Once the other building was top off, meaning finished, the Chrysler building raised their steel spiral from the lower floors to become the tallest building at the time

I always wondered about the Zeppelin towers. What do you do after you dock there? You can't load or unload anything.
@yankeecrazy9
@yankeecrazy9 6 месяцев назад
The idea was to lower a gangway from the zeppelin to the building to unload and load passengers. Few people, even the Navy’s dirigible experts, thought the idea was feasible at the time, in hindsight it seems like nothing but a publicity stunt to make sure the Empire State was the tallest building in the world.

Shouldn't simultaneously upload on this channel and top tenz, then i have to make a decision which to watch first. Thats a suggestion for the crew that clicks the button to release them.

Where is the data on the distributions of steel and concrete + stone down the structure? Can't seem to find that kind of data on any skyscraper in the world. Consider the shape of the Eiffel Tower which does not have to support twice its own weight in concrete.

Sorry NY, one of the first things I've been told to expect by people who have been: don't be alarmed, it smells like piss, like everywhere.
@cleverusername9369
@cleverusername9369 6 месяцев назад
NYC native who has lived here all my life: No, it actually doesn't. Maybe in a very few places you might catch a whiff, specifically during summer, but to suggest that the entire city smells like piss all the time is ridiculous, especially if you've never even been yourself. It doesn't smell any worse than any other highly congested city, and arguably much better than some (looking at you, India).

Karl is great in videos where he stands there with his coffee cup adlibbing sarcasm and being naturally witty. But if you force him to be serious, and tone down his natural accent, and all you get is blandness. Sorry Karl. This style isn't your forte. Please bring The Whistler back !
