The Emptiness of Existence by Arthur Schopenhauer 

All I know is that Arthur is a friend of mine. He's helped me accept what I know.

I find Schopenhauer the greatest observer that has ever lived. I, myself, had a 180 degree turn in life, from optimist to realistic/pessimistic. My favorite book of all is words of wisdom. It was delightful to have come to some of the same conclusions that he had about life. I’ve been depressed for 3 and half years now, and back to contemplating suicide again. I have tears in my eyes right now, but at least I know I’m not fooling myself with superstitions. P.S.: I don’t know if I rather be where I’m at right now, or if I would be better of being ignorant. Life really is suffering.

He voices what I’ve always had an inner sense of; that life is inherently meaningless!

Unfortunately, I cannot find any reason to disagree with Schopenhauer. You might not like his assessment of the human condition, but on which points is he wrong?

When you lose your desires there isn't much left. At least those who have a sex drive will have something to keep them busy for a while. I struggle to be interested in anything. Not much gives me a kick anymore. Like Schopenhauer staring into the mere emptiness of existence.

Everything we enjoy is pleasure, which lasts temporarily and thus pain and boredom takeover, even the delight in a single thought is the senses in reality after we have realised it is so to speak a "thought" as you label it!

Schopenhauer is a greater influence on culture than any modern philosopher, though many would not agree. They'd be wrong; Einstein, Darwin, and Freud are only a few of the heavy hitters who have admitted his importance. Add Joseph Campbell, Nietzsche, Kafka, and Wagner. And the list goes on and on.

It's not so much life that is the problem, it's consciousness.

There isn't any point to be here only wake up to repeate the same cycle see the same humans who only iflicted in you suffering and pain and whom you hated . Only suffering

He has more to say. He also states that a few, very few, have gone on to deny the will, to be compassionate but indifferent to the world and existence. Realizing the futility and redundancy these few witness the menagerie as the illusion it is. “ It is so Grasshopper.”

Unfortunately, much of what Schopenhauer said seems to be borne out by observations. Poor humanity. Would that it was different.

what is empty to one may be full to another. but both are connected to the processes, which will exist regardless of interpretation. Therefore what is the point of interpreting that which cannot be transcended, because of its mechanical nature? The point is only in the person who thinks there is a point. But can the point be found outside the person? No, because man is the point for himself. He squares his own circle. But the circle does not need him to exist. His meaning is merely an attempt to superimpose another type of existence onto that which already exists. He rejects that which exists and thus would like something that corresponds to his yearning for explanation beyond appearance. The appearance to him is not enough. He needs explanation to replace the appearance.

It is always dangerous to say out loud: our birth is a huge accident by bumbling humans doomed to be blown this way and that by winds of fate without a God caring anymore about humans then leaches , pigs or dung beetles . Any human that is NOT a misanthrope is not paying attention or not honest .

Why does truth have to be categorized as pessimism? Such a negative connotation. Truth is neither optimistic or pessimistic it simply is.

Can someone explain me how he discovers such deep stuff but feels the need to categorize it as something negative? I mean i dont want him to be positive but the other seems as meaningless

I wish humans never created time.

And so why continue? (and this question is not being familiar with Schopenhauer's complete works). The obvious to many he states, but the answer to why one should keep going or to live out one's lifespan when all is futile, seems left unanswered. Why did he, personally, and obviously live to be such an old age and why did he bother to write anything down if all is meaningless? Also there are some things left out, like homosexuality (which in his time has no definition), or the satisfaction of a good, loving partnership shared with another in a life.

I think it’s possible that the great philosophers are those who possess 2 traits. 1. They are clinically depressed, such that, regardless of life circumstances, they are pessimistic, bitter and generally incapable of happiness. 2. They are highly intelligent and articulate. This allows them to spread their inner demons to so many people. I’m not saying Schopenhauer is wrong, just that his suffering probably stems from a chemical imbalance or otherwise medical deficiency. Unfortunately, I tend to agree with his main points. Damn it!

Emptiness is das truth because truth is empty. Empty of what ? Empty of its own individual existence because everything is interbeing and nothing is being. There is no such thing as The thing in itself Because everything has 2 sides like night and day, life and death, yin and Yang.
