Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Not as good as the book, but still worth watching.

I love, love, LOVE how they cleverly focused the camera so to give us a glimpse of Holmes disrobing in the reflection of the bookcase door. Even though it only lasts a second, the tension in that moment makes me bite my lip every time!

Watson recognises Holmes and is startled that he is still alive, but Holmes doesn't bat an eyelid over Watson now being portrayed by a different actor! 'My dear Watson, you have mastered the art of disguise as well as myself I fancy!'

this is the second hint i have seen in comments that there have been 2 actors play the part of watson in this series.. is this correct,? As im sure ive seen most if not all the episodes in this series & i never noticed a change of Watson & cannot believe i would miss such an occurence..

I can just watch this over, and over, and over... I love it. Jeremy Brett was brilliant as Sherlock Holmes. It is an unspeakable tragedy that he passed away so young, and before the series was completed. Almost 20 years later and I'm still grieving.

At 7:11, the moment Holmes reveals his self to Watson, is a perfect adaption from Conan Doyle's short story of the Empty house which comprises (as any affectionado knows!!!) of the return of Sherlock Holmes, I just love Jeremy Brett and Edward Hardwicke they are simply scrumptious .. RIP to both of these great men, they are solely missed and much loved!!!

"Watson, would you mind if I should smoke a cigarette in your consulting room?" *FAINT!* Now THAT is just perfect Holmes/Watson interaction... as usual, Holmes has something miraculous up his sleeve (in this case, to Watson it appears no less than a ressurection!) and, as usual... Watson can't believe it (again... *FAINT!*) ;)

@pinkpearlbutterfly
@pinkpearlbutterfly 15 лет назад
You can see the great friendship these too had for each other. Notice how Holmes, when he first acknowledged himself, he opened his arms as to hug Watson, but instead Watson was so much in shock that he fainted like a little school girl. Notice as well when Holmes recounted his Moriarty adventure, by automatic Holmes cried out for Watson, but caught himself in time. Now Holmes ALWAYS does things after careful thinking and reflection. Shows how much he was really attached to Watson.

A bit of trivia: Anyone noticed the bookseller a.k.a. Holmes sitting IN the court room during the Sir Hardy's interrogation, in the first part of video? He had been listening to the whole inquiry.... My best part (aside from the reunion, of course...duh), is Jeremy's facial interpretation as he climbs up to safety under the rock at the falls. I found Jeremy's particular concentration during that scene very powerful. I could feel the intensity of his emotions. Good acting ! ;)

@pinkpearlbutterfly you're right! it shows how deep and warm their friendship is. Holmes didn't want his enemies kwow he was still alive but i'm sure that he didn't call in order to protect Watson. Since, They wouldn't hesistate to kill Watson too if necessary. But Holmes face shows so clear how he was touched seeing how much he means for his dear friend, and also the remorse and the pain to hurt his friend so much.

I love how the whole scene with the judge emphasizes how Watson has pretty much become Sherlock through knowing and losing him. The detection methods that Watson used being poo-pooed by the judge and Watson's disgust over the judge's classism towards Moran just smack of Holmes. I also love the way they did the reunion. Just the way I pictured it when I read it.

@cassandra5322 "oh i think im about to faint. here drink some whiskey." Brandy. Back then it was normal to use alcohol as a "constitution strengthener" if someone felt weak or to revive them. Kind of strange since alcohol's a depressant but, hey, I guess it worked. And the not-hug is so totally adorable :-)

A very moving scene indeed. Downey is actually quite good as Holmes too but I recommend any Holmes nuts pick up the American series Sherlock Holmes starring Ronald Howard. 39 episodes from 1954-1955 can be had cheap on DVD. Definitely worth it. Miller and Cumberbatch are also great. It's funny how, to me anyway, he can be played as a gentleman (Howard, Rathbone) or a borderline psychopath (Downey, Cumberbatch) and somehow still be Holmes to me. It's like James Bond...everyone's got a piece of him.
