Yeah but it’s ok to have headcanons without adding in an extensive disclaimer reiterating the point and message of the film. I think people are like “hey, this isn’t explicitly queer? 😠 why aren’t you talking about the actual movie?” And it’s like no one cares, let people do what they want. They don’t have to repeat what we all already know, they are having fun beyond the canonical context of the movie.

It lets people expand on the canon how they see fit, sometimes adding traits that are not confirmed in the original source. But there are people saying "OMG, why isn't anyone talking about Dolores being neurodivergent??" as if it was actually canon. It's not phrased as a headcanon, it's phrased as if it was true. Instead of saying "Camilo is genderfluid, you can't convince me otherwise" you can say "Being genderfluid would be so much easier with Camilo's powers. What do you think he would do in such a case? Maybe he would [...]", etc. It's just, you know, not trying to sell your opinion as fact.

As a girl who's extremely self conscious of my broad shoulders and over all larger frame, I loved Louisa. She was adorable and (although overworked) loved by her family. The whole trans Louisa thing made me wonder if I'm even supposed to be a girl.

One of the most frustrating things about forced representation is it really can veer into fetishization. Not just for gay people or mental illnesses, but for culture, race and everything else. Encanto feels organic, which is why I think so many people from so many different cultures can enjoy it. It's not diversity for diversity sake it's just a fun movie with fun music that has Latino/Latina characters.
I've noticed something that's marked in Encanto that I just like... consciously choose not to do. I won't expand on it, but it does relate to your point about forced rep and then fetishization. I suppose the explanation you give about Encanto being organic is why?

The salt over the shoulder comes from an old belief that it sort of "cuts" any bad luck that may come to you for any reason. They did an amazing job of picking a lot of cultural details. Totally agree with you.
Bad luck comes from a demon on your shoulder, back, or in your shadow. Salt is holy and demons flee from it. Throwing salt over your shoulder literally forces bad spirits attached to you away. Salt on the windowsill or doorframe keeps bad spirits out of the house. Salt water or sea water purifies the body and removes bad spirits from objects, but running water like a stream is the best deterrent for bad spirits and is purifying of evil thoughts. Knocking on wood is a ritual for asking the wood's spirit for good luck, or alternatively, getting rid of pesky wood spirits (they're like faries, tricky and may be nice or mean) who might make bad predictions come true as a prank. Finishing knocking on wood by knocking your own head demonstrates respect for the spirit. "See, i do it to myself too! No hard feelings" Anyway. Mi abuelo was very superstitious. He kept spiders on all the windows to keep out bad spirits and bad dreams. He kept a rosary above his bed but the crucifix had to be above the fireplace. I still don't know why he did that lol.
I heavily disagree with this because Bruno was canonically intended to have OCD. There are literal scripts from the movie itself where it was stated he had OCD and was intended to have OCD. He can still have latino/latine and hispanic behaviours be present in his every day life and play a huge role in how his OCD presents. Sometimes cultural, spiritual, superstitious, and religious values and beliefs play a role in people's mental disorders.

exactly!!! im a WOC whos mom has broad shoulders, is tall, and her voice is kind of deep? my friends make fun of me calling me a man bc im tall, have broad shoulders, and i grow a normal amount of hair, i manage. it's so harmful to cis/trans people to label someones gender cause they dont fit the stereotype of being cis or trans, its transphobic to trans women because its saying all trans women are masculine, and im pretty sure (cannot speak for all trans women) being called masculine makes them dysphoric about being AMAB.
Tbh this is really the only fair criticism of peoples head cannons I have seen. I can see this def being a problem but for gods sake let people relate to stories. If people want to hc Isabela as lesbian they can do that. As long as they aren’t forcing their head cannon on you, piss off and let people enjoy media. Perception that muscles are ugly and masculine leads to even cis women getting discriminated against in their own spaces. She may not be trans but I think she’s an important point of connection for some trans women who are more likely to relate to that

As a dude I actually love muscular women, she hulk was one of my first muscular woman crushes. It's a shame to see people automatically labeling them and in a way putting a subconcious canon about characters like that just being gay or trans.

Even though I'm not Latino, it's so annoying that people say someone is trans because they are muscular, because especially Latino women have more muscular bodies. I hate it so much, it's so rude and disrespectful. And plus, it's her gift. She probably looked "normal" when she was 5 and below. She's such a pretty character and she doesn't deserve to be called trans. I hate it so much for good reason.
The amount of "this character is XYZ" in so many fandoms are astounding, and the best thing I've learned through my hobbies is to never lock down thoose things at the start, leave the charcter blank and only fill in as needed so that as the character grows you can make it seem more fitting. Also some people will throw away legit canon reasons as to why two characters wouldn't, couldn't and shouldn't be couples purely for the "ship".... I'm looking at all the Baku x Deku shippers.
Arguable, most head canons are in fact “crack”, basically non-canon, and people are fully fine with that. If you don’t go looking for things it won’t present itself to you. “Keep it to yourself and those who enjoy the same ideas” is how you survive in fandoms. It’s odd how people are so opinionated about head canons these days since they’ve always been neutral. Don’t force head canons onto other people as “right” but don’t feel ashamed for having head canons either as long as you know they’re not-canon and people can disagree and still be right.
I always found super weird how some Disney fans always *insists* that every woman that doesn't want to get married to a random man their family picked for them is automatically a lesbian. And don't get me wrong, i love me some good LGBT+ representation I'm bisexual myself, but I'm also Hispanic and I'm aware that in many Hispanic cultures lots of women were forced to marry for convinience and seen as nothing more than a baby making machine. Isabella is not necessarily queer coded, you could interpret her like that for sure, but it's not okay to force that headcanon on other people specially when the character is supposed to represent a totally different topic. Also, those kind of headcanons in particular, the "she doesn't wanna marry this awful man/ man she has no interest in whatsoever means she must be a lesbian" kind of makes it seem like women who like men are going to want to endure mistreatment or fall for every man that crosses their path when it's not the case.
in the deleted scenes of encanto theres a part with isabella who goes in the woods late at night to meet with her secret boyfriend, this proves it was never the intention of the creators to make her a lesbian in the first place

Before I saw Encanto and saw all the LGBTQ+ stuff being said about the movie I was thinking "OH wow that's cool that this movie is showing LGBTQ representation" And then I watched the movie and saw that there was absolutely no signs of canon LGBTQ characters within the Madrigal family Don't get me wrong I love the movie I've watched it at least five times this week, but seeing people immediately trying to change the story or characters into something it's not really upsets me. The movie is amazing as is! It doesn't need any LGBTQ rep to be good! As someone in the LGBTQ community I feel this stuff has been taken a little out of hand. just because Camilo can shape-shifting, doesn't mean he's gender-fluid, just because part of the pattern on mirabel's dress happens to be the colors of the bisexual flag doesn't automatically make her bi (Saying this as a bisexual person), and just because Luisa is buff doesn't mean she's a lesbian! Cause I've been seeing that go around. Not everything has to be gay my dudes, if you have these headcanons or whatever you can! Just don't try to make your thoughts and headcanons about the movie canon! I like the movie as is and I don't think anything needs to be changed about it! It's a fantastic movie with a good message, don't try changing what it's trying to say

yeah when i watched this movie i was expecting a lot of lgbtq stuff in it because of what i saw before watching it so i was sorta surprised lol it’s a great movie as it is and it is all about family so we should think about that aspect of it

I am broad shouldered, due to having more of my dads genes. Luisa spoke to me, about keeping my emotions inside. Since my mother sucks at comforting and talks down to me like a child if I open up. Gave up trying years ago.
If I had a role model like Luisa when I was kid, I would have been a stronger woman. I always hate my body because I felt too muscle or too heavy when all the pretty princess/barbies were skinny and shaped the same. I only had Bratz but people would find them “slutty” when their clothes and big lips… :/ I am so proud of Disney for taking the time to represent other cultures correctly. Im incredibly upset people are going so crazy over the headcanons whilst ignoring the very real latino representation and the richness of the colombian culture’s inclusion in this film. Not to mention that ALL the problems the character faced were family related. They learned that they didnt have to fit a specific role abuela laid out for them, instead making their own slots in the family that allows them to be unique while still being part of the family. THATS the beauty of the film Edit: I’d like to clarify that NO having headcanons is not inherently a bad thing. Its just when it starts to step into the canon, overshadow the actual movie itself, and shove out other people’s ideas / interpretations that its a problem. I hate how all of the columbian culture and heritage the film has is being just raped and pillaged by forum fodder idiots that are desperate to slather well made characters with identity politics and mental disabilities to romanticize. I'm white as fuck even though i'm 25% Navajho so I can't really empathize with what that must be like. But if I were even in the hemisphere of the nationality the film is representing i'd probably be right in the same boat you are. So you have my utter sympathy, which is the best I can give.
Genuine question: Does enjoying headcanons automatically equal ignoring the actual canon events and/or messages of the film? I dont doubt that there are people solely hyperfocusing and getting tunnel vision on the aforementioned headcanons, however it seems presumptious to assume people cant enjoy both, as if having headcanons (on a general level) detracts from the actual media, both as its own piece of creativity and just from enjoying it for what it is.
@@fissilepear7805 true but this doesn’t really apply here because headcanoning characters as lgbtq or something doesn’t make them less columbian. headcanoning the characters as white americans would be conflicting the important elements of the canon, but personally thinking they’re queer isn’t. that doesn't mean that people can just ignore the meaning of the movie, but headcanons don't inherently do that.
You are allowed to make headcanons. It's your imagination so let it run wild. But it becomes a problem when: -When you start claiming that your headcanon is canon -Your headcanon can be easily debunked because of multiple reasons (creator saying it isn't true, something about said character's childhood, etc) -Your headcanon is completely based on stereotypes ...and etcetera.
“Forced representation is not _good_ representation.” This is a fantastic point. It’s odd how the same people who will get very angry over things like queerbaiting and neurodivergent coding and tokenism will engage in such things _themselves,_ constantly, in their own “headcanons.”

There isn’t anything wrong with making a headcanon for a character, but when you focus on just your headcanon, and ignore the movie’s message about trauma and the representation of Columbian/Latin American culture, it just comes off as being rude and insensitive :/
i was very sad when i found out people ignored their trauma and just went full on with headcanons for why they are like how they are as someone who is latino, not neurotypical and apart of the lgbtq, i could really tell the small things that people seemed to ignore and go for "they are mistreated because they are gay 😥" i like the headcanons but sometimes they can be insensitive and rude, bruno only says all those things because they are superstitions in latin culture, and with his gift, you can see why he does that.

I hate how Isabella was labeled as a lesbian by the fanbase, her arch with the marriage is to show that even if the guy is pretty and kind it's not what what she wants in life as she wants her freedom first and to find someone for herself. It's the same story for Merida in Brave, female character doesn't want to get married when she has a chance of freedom, and the fanbase says she's a lesbian. Honestly they managed to do it to Elsa too even!
I agree. Just because you don't want to marry someone does not make you homosexual. I mean, you can be asexual, aromantic or even homosexual, but my point is that homosexuality is not the only reason that these characters didn't want to marry
it's pathetic projection. The simple fact of the matter is that the characters have more going on. All 3 women had something to prove for themselves before anyone else and deal with that baggage. Merida wanted to prove she was as capable as her father, and the men around her. Had NOTHING to do with lesbians. Elsa had an uncontrollable power she wanted people to be safe from so she fled. She had no time for ANYONE be it man or woman. Isabella has been forced to be the picture perfect stunning flower of the madrigals, she didn't want that and the pressure was supresseing her. Nothing to do with lesbian.
At least in Elsa’s case, she just doesn’t have a love interest like Anna does or even shows any interest in romance in general. She’s probably more likely to be aroace or something.

Yeah, I never got the feeling that Bruno was OCD at all. If you know ANYTHING about superstitions, then you'd know that everything he was doing was an effort to ward off curses or jinxes. Making sure not to step on cracks, knocking on wood, throwing salt over your shoulder. I have a degree in psychology, and my first thought was "Oh, he's really superstitious." Not every character personality trait has to be a disorder, and frankly, I don't think disorders should be glorified like that anyway. Having severe OCD is not 'cool' or 'quirky.' It's something that heavily impacts a person's way of life and, in some cases, almost makes life unlivable. If Bruno really did have OCD, then all those people would effectively be saying "I'm so happy that Disney put a man in their movie who has been suffering every day, in horrible isolation, from severe and untreated OCD!" Very cool and quirky.
As someone who has suffered from OCD most of my life, seeing people pushing that Bruno has OCD and almost glorifying it has me really miffed. None of his behaviors--none--are consistent with OCD. They're superstitious behaviors. And frankly, it's quite offensive to people who actually have OCD to be pushing a crippling mental disorder onto a character that doesn't have it, especially when the evidence is false and doesn't line up with the disorder at all.
It makes perfect sense that he'd be more stressed and superstitious by his life in the walls, too, so whatever might be normal would be exacerbated because he's under stress.
I have severe depression/anxiety, and it’s NOT a cool thing to have. It effects how you learn in school, how you develop relationships at work and home, how you perceive and react to stressful situations, etc. You struggle to focus and remember things. It’s hard to keep in check. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone, much less glorify it and treat it like one of those identities.
Ocd is way more complex than that and that isn’t how ocd looks like. Ocd is something internal and is constant rumination. You actually can’t tell easily someone has ocd just by looking at them. Having quirky habits isn’t ocd. There’s more to it. Ugh I wish I stayed away from the fandom and I didn’t know about these disability or mental health headcannons. They seem more as stereotypes and caricatures, and it makes me feel like I’m living in the dark ages. As a person with adhd I feel second hand embarrassment from this and it just remind me of the annoying things adults would say to me like “ your special” no Karen i have a disability not a superpower.

How do people not understand that close to *all* of Bruno’s “tics and compulsions” are just common superstitions? It’s not even just Colombian or Latin culture, throwing salt, knocking on wood, that’s everywhere! Saying Camilo is genderfluid because he can shapeshift is literally defining one's gender because of their appearance and biology. as someone who kept getting label as asexual because i haven’t had a partner yet, putting a label on something is harmful to both people in real life, and harmful to creative decisions/exaggerations. and exaggeration in media is common. it’s been a theatrical treat seen greek times. it shows character. so, yes bruno is superstitious, it’s just exaggerated.

As an aromantic asexual I hope you realize it's totally okay to not want to be in a relationship and your orientation no matter what it is should not be questioned because of that choice. Tbh putting those labels on asexual people are also harmful as well- I’m asexual myself and I’m not interested in dating but I don’t MIND it. So seeing other people force asexuality on other people just cause they don’t have a partner is annoying /: and just offensive to the asexual community since asexuality means that we’re NOT sexually attracted to people (obviously there’s different umbrellas in the asexual community.) but yeah, we can still have a partner if we want to. Here is something people, specifically those who headcannons everything to the point they miss the entire point, need to understand. Isabella isn't lesbian. The basis for why some people headcannon her as one is because she didn't want to marry Mariano. What they conveniently forget is the reason why she didn't want to marry him. It's not that she didn't want to marry him because he was a man, or that she found women attractive. The reason she didn't want to marry him is because she felt like she is being forced to, in order to appear as the perfect Isabella her abuela wanted her to be. What really annoys me is that not only does this headcannon makes it seem like not wanting to marry immediately makes you LGBT+, it also completely ignores one of the themes the film is trying to show. Louisa is not transmasculine, or transgender. She is simply a beautiful woman who happens to be big, buff and strong. I'm not saying that it's wrong to headcannon her as such, but it perpetuates a certain stereotype towards other women who happens to be big, buff and strong, that they must be transmasculine or transgender, otherwise why would they have such a physique. And again, this headcannon focuses so much on her gender, and not on what she represents, a woman who feels like she's carrying the pressure of the entire family and village, and is trying her best to carry it on her own. Camilo isn't gender fluid. He just happens to be a person who can shapeshift. Seriously, it's like saying a woman is lesbian simply for her love of cactus, or a man is gay simply because of his love for style and fashion. Dolores doesn't have tourettes. Her usual squeaks, at least according to the comments from people of Columbia, is a sound made usually when people hear something they aren't supposed to know. This is a cultural thing. The people who headcannons it, at least the ones I've seen so far, doesn't have that as part of their culture, and I can see why they didn't understand it. Now you know. Same with Bruno. The basis of the headcannon that he has a mental illness is because of the tapping of wood he usually does. It's not due to a mental illness. It is due to superstition. The constant knocking on wood, the throwing of salt behind him, that all comes from superstition, he became superstitious, and those who watched the movie can understand why. The whole point of the movie is to showcase the theme of how intergenerational trauma affects everyone inside their home, how different the outcome of the trauma is, an how culture can affect it. It's supposed to show that you can heal that type of trauma instilled inside you. But instead of focusing on that, there are people who decided that their gender is a more important topic. That the fictional label is much more important than the story all in all. It's frustrating to watch this happen over and over again.

“Forcing Sexualities and Mental Disorders to make it something it's not” I'm so happy I know now that there are a lot of people that think the way I do, it's been such a problem in every movie/show that has a huge fanbase recently and honestly a few things were ruined for me because of how much there was like Luca.
It CAN be a problem, but I think if they're not pushing their headcanons on others, they're fine to do what makes them happy. Example, my headcanon that Elsa is ace. How does it harm anyone? I don't have much positive ace rep, and there's no evidence that she isn't, I'm not pushing it on anyone, I'm not sexualizing her or shipping her in a weird relationship(fuck elsanna shipping, that's gross). I'm not hurting anyone. So WHY is my headcanon labelled a "problem". God I am so fucking SICK of the term "problematic". You know what's problematic? Not letting people live their lives.
And the Luca thing, my goodness 🙄🤦🏾♀️ The director LITERALLY said that he based the story off of he and his friend. That community needs to have their own show that they can talk about and leave the straight shows for straight people

The Encanto fandom is full of these people. "Bruno has OCD", "Isabela is gay", "Camilo is genderfluid". Character traits are being boiled down to sexual identity or mental disorders now.

I just feel like people are getting too caught up in this stuff. Yes, awareness about these issues is absolutely amazing, but forced representation of it and diagnosing characters like you are a psychologist or doctor is just sick. I just feel like people are getting worse and worse. People use mental diseases as fetishes now and think it's "quirky" (not saying everyone who is doing this does). And when you point these things out to people they label you as homophobic or against mental disease awareness. I am bisexual and have diagnosed anxiety so I am pretty sure I'm not either of these. People are just not focusing on the big picture anymore.
For anyone looking for a simply put version: 1. Headcanons are fine as long as you accept they are just that, headcanons. (This goes for sexuality and mental illness) 2. Headcanons are fine as long as you realize those headcanons aren't the point of the movie. Example: headcanoning Bruno as autistic/OCD/gay is fine as long as you understand that isn't his point in the movie, it isn't the reason he was shunned from the family. 3. Headcanons are fine long as they aren't based on (harmful) stereotypes. Example: Luisa being a trans woman because she's big and strong. Cis women can be these things. Example #2: Isabela being lesbian bc she didn't want to marry Mariano. Women rejecting a man doesn't make her a lesbian.

What I hate the most about people who make headcanons, is the way that they try to force OTHERS to believe in what they believe in, and if they don’t accept that head canon, the person who doesnt accept it gets disregarded as a Homophobe or a Transphobe, and it angers me SO much.

As someone who is trans and gay, I don’t go out of my way to put this on blast and make it my personality. I don’t see why that has to be the case. I’m just me. If someone’s only personality trait is their sexuality or gender identity, then maybe they just aren’t interesting outside of those aspects? But honestly my identity is not a big deal to me and it’s just another aspect of my being. You’ll find out if you ask but I don’t find the need to advertise, y’know?
I think people are thinking he is genderfluid because he never expresses discomfort when he shapeshifts into other people. It is entirely possible he is, but that's not what the movie is about, and its written by Disney so even if he is they would never admit it. So long as it doesn't hurt anyone I think its ok to speculate. Shapeshifters generally are genderfluid, such as Loki. But its not for sure he is or isn't.
as a latin american that has lived my whole life here, it makes me so mad how people have transformed the message of the movie. Generational trauma is still such a prominent thing here, specially since it hasn't been alot of time since the end of dictatorship imposed on the Cold War by the US. The dictatorship, at least on my country, ended on 1990, but just one month ago, media recognized and announced that it was finally the end of the transition period and we are finally a complete democracy. The experiences shaped the generations of out grandparents and parents, those fears imposed in us and Encanto shows the healing and letting go of the past, so we can shape a new future.
I agree, it surprises me a lot that the fandom isn't more focussed on this message, i've barely seen it discussed. However, i will say that just because a character is gay or has a mental disorder that doesn't 'change' the meaning of the film. A gay character doesn't make the film about sexuality, and it would be good if disney included more [obvious] representation in their movies, without just making the movie 'about' that. (also 100th like!)
@@MrMoon-pp8xv I know, it is just a comparison of how it can relate to the newest traumas from latin american families. In the 50's people were extremely poor and there was alot of child mortality (40% of kids died before the age of 5). Also really corrupted government and inequality. That is also still a trauma for the older demographic of our people.

As a Colombian it’s really sad and frustrating that the “fandom” seems to focus more on this headcanons than the actual Latin representation and the showcase of our culture, not to mention how incredibly deep the movie strikes for some Colombian (and Latin American) people because the roots of the problem in the movie, which is in some sort of way the problem the Abuela faced in her youth, is something that happened in the past and STILL HAPPENS here in our country. Look, we get it, you don’t have to be absolutely in love with our culture or know every little thing about our political and society problems, but when you make this movie seem like it’s about your headcanons more than it is about the culture and showcase of our conflict, that’s what’s messed up for me. This characters are so beautifully written inspired by our country and how some people actually are here and in Latin America that making it all about their gender or sexuality just feels wrong. I’m not saying don’t have this headcanons, but don’t reduce the incredible work behind this to just that.

Omg same!! I felt the same thing when Luca came out. I’m Italian and I was so excited that we were FINALLY going to get a movie based in Italy but, people were too obsessed with saying how gay Luca and Alberto were instead of actually watching the movie and enjoying the message for what is is. ( I’m not saying that I’m against that point of view, I’m just saying that people are trying to force it down other peoples throats.) And to be honest, I was actually very sad that they didn’t say more Italian words like not calling their grandma “nonna” and their uncle “Zio”. I still love the movie but it just felt like a letdown that they didn’t incorporate more from the culture😞😞.
As a Latin man myself I just find it incredibly funny that unknown elements of a different culture or things that are outright explained in the movie are confused with mental disorders and sexuality lmao. Bruno literally says "Knock on wood" like the idiom for avoiding bad luck and Camilo shapeshifts more like certain versions of Loki would, for practical pranks and fun. No todo es discretamente sexualidad o desorden mental mis panas. EDIT: alright maybe Loki is not such a great example, but let´s say similar to Mystique from X-men, she´s a confirmed girl but has no issue disguising herself as a man

And I think blue, purple and pink has always is a common colour palette to use since they go together well since it’s like using red orange and yellow. And that combination of colours can represent more than just bi, some people use that colour combination for unicorns or galaxies.
I find it hillarious these are the same people who usually go beserk over different cultures not being represented in media, only for them to instantly try to give away with said cultural elements to forcibly adapt their own archetypes and standards. Being from Colombia, one of the things i liked the most about the movie was how it was actually able to show the country in a way not entirely related to the cartels or armed conflict (with the latter being used in a very appropriate way), which is usually what we get in all Colombia related media, so seeing all of that get reduced to sexualities and disorders is just sad
I think these people just have too much time in their hands and spend it all on themselves, so all the knowledge about random things (like "how to identify this mental disorder") comes through when they see something unusual to them, but they don't stop to think that they might be wrong for 2secs, when I watched the movie, the first thing I assumed from the salt throws Bruno does, etc... Was that it had to do with colombian culture, cuz that's what the movie's about

The thing is, everybody assumes that people who are shapeshifters are genderfluid and that's frustrating because while it's great to see that kind of representation where the character's genders aren't their assigned sex/just one gender, putting every shapeshifter into that category is just kinda.....I don't know the word. Wrong? It's just that, even though you can change your form to be anyone, your gender doesn't have to change. It kinda seems a little transphobic. It's like saying that, "you have to change your body to be trans." And the other way, too: "If you change your body you're trans." Both of these things are just not true. I made a shapeshifting OC who is a girl. She's not genderfluid, even though she can shapeshift. Could Camilo be genderfluid? Yes. Is it definite because he's a shapeshifter? Absolutely not. And the fact that people are saying they will be mad if he's not genderfluid is completely ignoring what this movie is about and ignoring the fact that shapeshifting in fiction does NOT equal genderfluidity. A similar thing is happening with Isabela. Just because she doesn't want to marry one specific guy suddenly means she's a lesbian? That's not how that works. Plus, again, it's ignoring what the movie is about. It's ok to have headcanons but don't force them and insist they are definitely canon. Just let these characters be themselves and see where it goes. Create headcanons if you want but don't be mad if they don't turn out to be true. And stop stereotyping! I see it so much! It's completely ignoring what this movie is about!
i truly hate it... shapeshif is not the only example of this unfortunately. And i find this although understandable and probably natural still incredibly annoying and wrong. It may not be methaphor at all, it may be methaphor for so many other things... the first coming to mind - existencesial crisis and trust issues, manipulation and all but no... it is all about LGBT... i am honestly surprised this topic survived for so long. I'm from the LGBTQ community, and I can't be more ashamed of how my community "interpreted" this movie. This movie is a representation of- like you said- intergenerational trauma, and nothing more. Sure, some of these are harmless 'headcanons' but its not cute or fun to tamper with a message that can be deeply emotional or even scarring. I assure you that we wouldn't like it very much if someone were to take coming out as LGBTQ and turning it into a headcanon that contradicts the entire purpose. I have no idea why we see it safe or even okay to do so to other concepts and messages. All I'm saying is this movie- along with others- should be left at it's own meanings and we should let it represent what it's *supposed* to represent. I have a colombian friend and im mexican, so i was talking about bruno's “compulsions”. he explained that many people on Colombia do this for good luck, the wood's touching, the salt and sugar he throws in the air (the left is for the salt and the right is for the sugar), and the things he mumble are part of the superstition as you said! Also the modisms of Camilo and other characters are tipical of different regions of Colombia. Pepa mood's, how felix talks, Camilo movements of hand. It's all about colombian manerisms of different regions. Which was super interesting to me and that's why i really enjoy the effort Encanto did in representing a bit of Colombia. (Srry about my english if it has some errors)
Yes, people do things for good luck like that, but when its obbsessive it crosses a line. Idk if colombians do this always and like this, but it doesnt seen healthy. Im not saying that it for sure is a disorder, but when someone is suffering from so.ething like this and see it in a movie they will be less likely to get help. The whole frase of bruno is “sana sana, colita de rana, si no sana hoy, sanara mañana” which in English is “heal heal, little tail of a frog, if it doesn’t heal today, it will heal tomorrow” here in Latinoamérica they tell us this so we feel better when we get hurt. You could say those were magic words to calm down a child , or at least it worked on me.
That's very true. When my older sister and I was watching, she got excited hearing Bruno saying that because our mom used to say that to her and my brother when they were young and would get hurt sometimes

Now you might be wondering "but how do their parts change?" They don't, because it's changing their gender, not there sex (their sex is how they were born). And gender is what they identify. Like it’s okay to have headcanon’s and make videos about said headcanon, but in a setting we’re people are talking about what’s happening in the story you don’t need to bring it up. (Also with the “Camilo is genderfluid” thing I can get were people are coming from because it’s an extremely popular trope in fiction for genderfluid characters.)
Shape shifting could be a symbolism for the feeling of having to be whatever people need him to, wich could be explored on a sequel. But genderfluid? What the actual fuck???? He shapeshifts for second or even minutes only, since it's never specified of he has done it for more than an hour, or even a day
I don't really see the issue. If people can identify with the story or characters through their headcannons, how is it an inherently negative thing? We barely even got to explore Camillo's issues in the movie to the point where a lot of people headcannon his issues as being an identity crisis (not knowing who he really is) or gender dysphoria. Who cares? I don't feel like it takes away from the core of the movie. You guys are also forgetting that LGBTQ+ people exist in Colombia too. Don't they deserve to feel represented in the movie just as much, even if it's not over canon info?
I had no idea that people saw "Sana, sana, colita de rana" as an indication of neurodivergence. I too have been hearing it for as long as I can remember and, despite me being almost 18 now, my dad _still_ says it to me when I get injured. So, despite me being both Hispanic _and_ autistic, my reaction to hearing it in the movie was excitement due to recognizing the phrase from my family's culture. The thought of neurodivergence didn't even cross my mind for the entire movie.
It just shows how much Americans can't even be bothered to do a little bit of research about what does that even mean. It's just a funny phrase we say when someone gets hurt (specially children), it's not a sign of neurodivergence
My dad (mexican) never let us be in touch with our culture or even taught us Spanish so I had never heard the phrase before. But even then, I never once thought it was a neurodivergent trait. I also have autism as well as adhd and not once did it seem like he has any kind of neurodivergence or disability. I did like the fact that they showed how superstitious Latinos are, though

As someone with OCD, I can vouch for the fact that we often adopt superstitions as part of our compulsions (I did, for a while, and I’ve heard of other OCD sufferers doing the same). This is why some people see Bruno as having OCD, and it’s not necessarily inaccurate. That said, I do see what you’re saying here and agree with it. Edit: Breathe, people. We all love Encanto, and I think at least most of us also agree with the main message of this video. We don't have to agree on every little detail.
I think people can headcannon it, but as a latina, most of the things that Bruno do that people consider as the "proof" of OCD, are just a part of our culture and superstitions :/ Some people are assuming that a character has OCD just because the character are from a culture that they are not familyzered with, and it can be problematic and kinda offensive to people from that culture...

Knocking on wood, throwing salt, and avoiding stepping on cracks are all common "bad luck" omens. Another small detail I haven't seen anyone pick up on yet is the ladder in the back of the scene where Bruno performs all of these superstitious acts, as stepping under a ladder is also considered bad luck. Just because someone is latino does not mean they cannot be lgbt or neurodivergent. This whole anti-lgbt and anti-nd thing the Encanto fandom has going on rn is kind of concerning. Nobody is invalidating the message of the film by having headcanons. Just because the movie is set in Colombia does not mean that only Colombians or Latinos have the right to relate to the cast of the film and their struggles.

The rainbow on Mirabel isn't even the bi flag colors, the blue and purple are way too light, it's almost like blue, pink, and purple just make pleasant color scheme. Disney is a mega corporation trying to appeal to everyone for the most sellable movie possible, they're not gonna bother with LGBTQ representation in a major motion picture if they don't have to. If they do it's with a minor character that can be easily ignored. Edit: apparently there's a headcanon that Luisa is trans too, and while headcanons are fine this one rubs me the wrong way a bit. Being big, strong, and having a deep voice are things cis women are capable of having too (plus I'm sure the magic beefs her up a bit). Headcanoning her as trans for these factors borders on stereotypical to me. Edit 2: Been informed the rainbow is an Easter egg to the VA of Mirabel, who is bi, which is neat! But I don't think the confirms or denies Mirabel is bi, though I don't have issues with people headcanoning it as such.
That take also affects afab women who have deeper, huskier and even more deadpan voices, like myself. I usually hate my voice because I don't sound feminine enough to my ears. I hate it when people force sexualities/disorders onto characters. It's ALWAYS based on stereotypes, and it's just wrong. I think a character is way more than their sexuality alone. It's just really sad to see that a lot of people base characters on stereotypes, it's actually really harming. I also think Bruno is just superstitious? Like doing those things doesn't mean you have OCD, he just seems constantly paranoid after basically being told by everyone in town, including his family, that he's bad luck. That's literally the reason he went into hiding, because he loved his family but he didn't wanna ruin anything. Camilo being genderfluid can't be right, because if he wasn't a shapeshifter, nobody would've said anything. That's literally the only reason people make him out to be genderfluid, because he has the ability to be anyone he wants. For me I feel like those people are only thinking of the characters sexually if they're worrying about the characters sexuality. I hate how people take complex characters with interesting stories and only think of them as, oh they're gay, or oh they're lesbian. Like come on man, Their sexuality doesn't define who they are And as someone who makes plenty of characters, I almost never focus primarily on their sexual orientation because I feel it doesn't matter.

With the headcanons of Isabela being a lesbian, it's kind of saying you can't be an independent person who fully accepts themselves. You must be gay otherwise. In my opinion, it seems wrong. It's also kind of annoying when people force their headcanons on everyone and accuses others of being homophobic or ableist simply because we're trying to educate them on why a majority of headcanons surrounding the movie and fandom are troubling. Edit: Nothing wrong with head canons, if you head canon her as a lesbian for a different reason, then idc. People thinking “she didn’t want to marry a guy, she must be lesbian” bothered me. Am I the only one who thought people think that because her song involves turning from a mono colored pink into a rainbow? I mean, rainbows aren‘t inheritely just for LGBT people, obviously, but *being forced to marry someone you don‘t love to be accepted* is literally the gay experience for many who aren‘t able to come out too. Additionally, Yes, the movie is about intergenerational trauma and the colombian culture specifically, but it‘s not the only instance of generational trauma, it happens for example in asian cultures and slavic (as well as many other) cultures as well. Just because a movie has a specific target audience, that doesn‘t mean nobody else is allowed to relate to it and connect with it over their own stories as well.

Why art or media has to have this sheen of relatability for people enjoy it? Even though there is something in the film that pretty much anyone could relate to by contorting characters to have certain identities or traits it demonstrates an unwillingness to appreciate the experiences that all human beings share for the sake of frankly validation. Let’s learn more about Colombian culture, about the lives of Latin American women and their place in their respective societies. That’s would be my takeaway from the film, exploring and understanding a culture different from my own not ignoring it and centring my own identity and experience. Frankly Western peoples do this constantly when consuming non Western art forms and works and alot of people are sick and tired of it. You can’t claim that people are doing both because they aren’t. They could but their choosing not to because they don’t really care. I think the rainbow flowers were just nice visual and even if it was an indication of Isabella being LGBTQ+ it’s such un uninspired and on the nose way of doing it that it would be unimpressive storytelling. As with the forced marriage millions of women and cis men are forced in arranged marriages or even child marriages every year not just gay people. Plenty of people marry people they don’t want to marry, though are different reasons. Yet again there is ample opportunity to expand and explore a new area of the subject of forced marriage. Instead of doing that it’s seen as an opportunity to affirm one’s identity. Forced marriage for one set of people is different for another set of people, by just saying gay people have experienced forced marriage and leaving it there you haven’t actually learned or understood anything.
Yup, however that's not too far from real life. I turned down 3 men because I wasn't looking for a relationship and all 3 guys were pretty sleazy. I got mocked by my LGBT friends who asked if I was sure I like guys. It's incredibly frustrating.
@@ghosty8193 It is VERY frustrating. All throughout high school, almost everyone in my life assumed I was lesbian because I just didn’t feel like dating anyone. I had to pretend to have crushes on random dudes just to get everyone off my back. I went from absolutely knowing that I was straight (but just not interested in dating at the time), to thinking maybe I HAD to be lesbian since I didn’t date guys. It was a very confusing time for me. After having to deal with that for years, I absolutely can’t stand when people force the idea that someone has to be gay if they don’t make it 100% clear that they’re straight. Why can’t we just not assume these things at all??
Instead of forcing representation onto existing characters whose sexuality isn't even relevant, we should demand more quality films and shows that authentically represent different cultures, gender and sexuality, mental health, religion, and neurodiversity. Preferably directed, written by, and starring members of the community.
I think the reason people do this in the first place is because of the lack of these films/shows. People have been asking for this for a long, long time and it never happens, and so people desperately look to see themselves anywhere they can

@@user-bh4tt8sc7q directors dont make those kind of movies because its wrong to romanticize and glorify mental illnesses. Movies like Temple Grandin and the like, documentaries of people with these illnesses, are arguably the best way to bring light and awareness to these things.
Fun fact:One of the creators of Encanto have said that Bruno represents the indigenous people of Colombia. In Latin culture when ever someone makes a squeaking sound it means that they know something there not supposed to know.
The thing I really like about this movie is that is shows that hispanics/Colombians can have different skin tones/colors! Like they show Pepa whos skin tone is a bit lighter then the others and they show Felix whos skin tone is darker! @Caleido Scope yes! For example, I like the design Of the characters in Luca because its the Italian culture, and it shows that their skin tones are different as well! As an Italian my skin tone is a bit lighter, I’m fair skinned, and there are other Italians who are darker, tan etc! And it just shows that were all beautiful and unique in our own way and thats what makes us beautiful❤️

I hate how a character will wear certain colors that just happen to be the same colors as a pride flag, people think that means they're LGBT. That's not how sexuality works.
Especially as the movie has a very intricate color symbolism: Julieta's side is blue, Pepa's side is yellow and Bruno is green, while Abuela's color is pink. The color change Isabela goes through (from pink to a mixture of yellow and blue) also shows the changes in her inner attitude.
I didn't even know people were doing this, but now that I know, it's pretty damn sad. It's just a simple movie that is fun to watch but still educates and represents Latin-American culture, something I really enjoyed while watching the movie. I noticed how some of these practices in the movie related to a few of mine, even the pressure of "staying perfect". Also, can I just add, Disney did an amazing job representing their culture and bringing out the small details, I feel like it's one of the big reasons why it got so popular. Some of the "fandom" doing these things honestly just ruins it.

People aren't making the movie "all about" LGBT issues or neurodivergence like she says in the video. They are just relating it to their own experiances and making head canons; I have no idea how that's somehow meant to be "ruining" the film or its latin rep. Plenty of the people (mainly teenagers) doing this are doing so in isolated internet communities, not pushing these head canons on other people or saying that their interpretations are the objectively correct ones. Furthermore of the LGBT+ and neurodivergent people relating to the film are latin themselves, who are you to say that they must only celebrate their ethnicity and culture and not bring other aspects of their identity into that celebration? In what way is the movie no longer "simple" if the characters can be interpreted as queer? Bruno's and Dolores' things are indeed based on superstitions and columbian culture; but so are many people's compulsions with things like OCD, not everything has to be one or the other and people having fun with a movie does not need to rob you of your enjoyment and certainly does not rob the movie itself of its beautiful representation.
honestly, this is something that NEEDED to be pointed out. i am perfectly fine with people making headcanons, fanfics, etc. the problem starts when assumptions about characters are made mainly off of hurtful stereotypes. just because camilo shapeshifts into someone on the more feminine side, that does not mean he is genderfluid, as cis men/boys can be interested in things that are stereotypically feminine. (take harry styles for example) assuming that luisa is a trans woman only because she is strong and has a deeper voice shows a harmful stereotype that trans women are not as feminine as a cis woman/girl. it is also borderline sexist, since you are assuming that someone has to have once had a male anatomy in order to be strong and to uplift their community. just because isabela (or any woman for that matter) rejects a male, that alone does not make her a lesbian. women can reject a conventionally attractive male and still feel attracted to other men. besides, it was a forced marriage. bruno can be superstitious without having a disability, although it is seen that he feels partially responsible for some of the bad things that have happened to his family and/or community because he saw them coming every little sound someone makes is not a tic. dolores' "hm" sound is most likely one that signifies that she knows what is happening around her, or overheard something that might not have been meant for her to hear. headcanons and other stories told by fans are fun and enjoyable, as well as the fans getting engaged with something they are genuinely interested in. i just feel as though assuming a character's identity given the fact that you are only going based off of stereotypes is harmful, and takes away from the true message of the movie. in my opinion, this also partially takes away from the culture behind this movie, as three colors on mirabel's dress does not mean she is bisexual. the culture and beauty of a latino household/community was portrayed very well in my opinion, so i find it a bit unnecessary to (un)intentionally not mention the culture aspect in a movie that represented a lot of people around the world. all in all, do not assume a character's sexual orientation or gender identity because of a stereotype.
I definitely agree with luisa not being trans. I myself am a black belt in taekwondo, and i am a straight woman. Out of my siblings i am the oldest and strongest which makes me feel alot like Luisa. Just because i act more "boyish" doesnt mean i was ever a boy or am lesbian
Also harmful to say a woman can't be like Luisa, but has to be as girly as Isabela to fit into the standard of a proper woman. Exactly the opposite message the film is trying to convey.
@@JustRen9000 I understand this and also that’s why Luisa is one of my favorite characters. As someone who was non-binary for a bit but it didn’t fit for me. I realized to except myself for who I am and what I like to do. And with Luisa being seen as a trans women it hurts to see that you can’t be more boyish without being trans or queer. She’s just such a strong yet empathetic and helpful character that I strive to become in the future. (Not meaning her being pushed to do everything but how she helps and cares for others.)

As someone who's a member of a minority group that barely gets a proper representation, instead of whining about it and looking for representation where there isn't, I appreciate whatever I can find, but I don't find it to be representation when the author never explicitly said that that was intended, because that's the whole point of representation, where someone intends to properly represent a group or people by the means of story media Also on a side note, I noticed that it's mentioned oftentimes, how that this movie touches Hispanic people, as if only Hispanic people experience these very things, but I think it's more just that that just so happened to be the ethnicity they chose, and it was a fun cultural thing to add to in terms of a magical theme, since that's rarely been done in a princessy Maner. That being said, their experiences are not unique in terms of generational trauma and toxic family dynamics, as a lot of ethnicities have to deal with this, especially if the elders of their family went through many levels of atrocity, and then developed maladaptive coping mechanisms like the grandmother in the story did. The reason why a lot of times, the elders of an ethnic family seek extraordinary amounts of perfection in their descendants, is because of the high expectations put upon them as children, and often times, they came from the country where they had low opportunity, so then they moved their families to the us, and hopes their grandchildren, great-grandchildren or whatever will have a better childhood. Little did they realize, their bad childhood was more or less the result of their parents bad parenting, not the inevitable situation they went through due to the atrocities of their home country. Not that it wasn't worthy of running away from to give the children a better life to look up to, but that wasn't the main thing that made that person have a bad childhood, it mainly had to do with how their parents handled the tough situations, but then they quickly associated that with the atrocities of themselves rather than how their parents taught them to handle the anxiety provoking situations. This is what creates this toxic dynamic of families having high expectations of their children, because that was expected of them as a kid, and they only thought that it was unreasonable towards them because of the circumstances at hand, and then they feel as if you're just ungrateful because you are still saying that you're not getting your needs met when you are living in a country that isn't under constant war, economic crisis, or anything else that was perceived as the root of the problem to not having a good childhood
"forced representation isn't good representation." I couldn't agree more. The movie is great without all this other things. Sometimes it's not about the LGBTQ+ community. Sometimes other minorities need space to shine too. I'm sorry that some of the people in my community have a hard time understanding this. What I was trying to say is that I want proper representation of my community (the LGBTQ+ community). I think that this movie is for the Columbians and latinos. It isn't our movie. I would say that having an entire Disney movie about your community and culture is already leagues ahead of representation for the LGBT community and people having headcanons whilst enjoying media effects nothing, a headcanon adding to something doesn't detract from what's already there.
There is definitely a difference between relating to a character and seeing yourself in them versus labelling a character based on those feelings. I personally relate to Bruno a lot and his superstitious behaviors reminds me of my OCD. I feel comforted knowing this popular character can do these seemingly random things (to most people they're random anyway) and not be laughed at or ridiculed. But that doesn't mean he has OCD. And since that's not hinted at or expressly stated in the movie, he's not meant to have it. For me, it's fine to show parallels that are respectful as long as they don't overshadow the real aspects of the character. If someone relates to Camilo because he can shapeshift and it reminds them of their genderfluidity, that's one thing. But labelling him AS genderfluid because you relate to him isn't right. And labeling any of these characters' sexualities, genders, or neurodivergence completely takes away from the points the movie was trying to make. I've never seen Luca but from what I've gathered it's like you said, it's about two boys who have to hide who they truly are. You can headcanon these characters as LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent because it doesn't overshadow the original message of the film. In fact, they pair together really well. For lots of movies, labeling the main characters is fine because it can fit into a story really well and/or lots of movies don't have any diversity in them. For example, I recently learned lots of people headcanon Bella from Twilight as autistic based on her mannerisms and behaviors. This actually adds to the story (not that I think it's a GOOD story) because it creates depth in the character and explains why she does half the stupid crap she does. Also there's basically no neurodivergent representation in the films. Almost all actions in Encanto stem from the generational trauma. I can't think of one action that isn't based in anything else. Besides maybe Mirabel making Antonio a stuffed animal and Julieta healing Mirabel's hand (since those are both based in simple kindness). But even during those scenes the main focus is on the stress caused by having to be perfect. And this film has LOADS of representation for POC. I was so excited to see a movie where the main cast was majority NOT white. As a white person who loves learning about different cultures, it's really boring seeing all white characters all the time. I was SUPER stoked to see the movie because of that and it's really sad to see how everyone is focusing their attention on other minorities instead. I personally think it's fine to headcanon characters but people seem to make a sport out of it now. "There's 10 characters and they all have to be something on my checklist". It's kind of sad. They are so focused on "creating more representation" that they refuse to let the characters speak for themselves. Everyone just becomes a collection of traits that can fit into a box. Which is ironic because people aren't supposed to fit into boxes and that's the whole point of highlighting queer and ND characters in media. If we focused more of our energy shining a light on what IS in the movie and less time labeling things that AREN'T, then we'd all be able to appreciate the representation that is THERE. Also, by putting all of our energy into labeling characters as queer and ND ourselves, we're telling Disney that we don't care about the representation they gave and that we will continue to be happy headcanoning people as queer and ND instead of SEEING QUEER AND ND CHARACTERS!! I'd much rather SEE a movie about queer afro-hispanic people (sorry if that's the wrong term feel, free to correct me) then PRETEND I saw one. This movie is fantastic and I will continue to love it for what it is: a movie about a black and Latinx (once again let me know if this is wrong. lol I try) family who struggle to overcome their generational trauma together. When a minority gets a movie, we should focus on lifting THEM up instead of trying to insert ourselves. In the meantime, we should keep fighting for movies that represent us. I do agree with you. As for the "latinx" you can just say hispanic or latinos, because even though the "o" is usually used to refer to men, it is also used as neutral to refer to as "everyone". We, spanish speaking people, cant pronounce the x in latinx as you do, and we didnt even invent the term ourselves. So yeah, latinos or hispanic people is ok :). He literally was canonically shown to have it via the scripts for the movie. They said he had OCD. This is the only thing I can't agree on because factually he was intended to have OCD.

I'm glad to get some form of representation that isn't just "and he counted his steps and cleaned his kitchen every five minutes". I was working under the assumption that he was written that way because he was extremely superstitious because of his gift, which is what most people say. I just wish they could've SAID THAT like IN the movie. "Why is Bruno acting so...weird?" "oh well he has OCD.....and he's lived in the walls for basically 10 years". For 2 and a half seasons I was thinking "you know, this character is giving me bisexual vibes like she SEEMS into these girls but also she's had a male love interest". But it was literally just a feeling I had based off some vague dialogue and behavioral choices. Halfway through season 3 she had a female love interest (for literally only one episode but that's not the point lol) and had an on screen kiss. They could've just saved me the trouble and had some random dialog mention that she's had a girlfriend in the past or that she likes more than one gender. Like I'm not complaining about her being bisexual but they could've just mentioned it sometime before the MIDDLE of season 3. My point: love the representation, wish they would just state it in the movie or hint at it via dialog. It's sad that I'd have to research "is Bruno meant to have OCD?" in order to find out if he's written to have OCD. Theres nothing wrong with being genderfluid but just because he turns into different people, weather that be male or female, does not necessarily mean he is gender fluid. I would also like to point out how people get mad over someone saying that one of those characters are not lgbtq+ even though the film makers or even disney has not confirmed or even brought up an idea of lgbtq+. Like others who point this out, just because I'm, or anyone else for that matter, saying that they are not part of or confirmed to be lgbtq+ does not mean I am against lgbtq+.
Not to get heated in here, but genderfluid people are represented in media (mostly films, cartoons, you get the point) by shapeshifters. So I can kind of get the Camilo part. Im not saying Im in for literally deleting the plot out of him, but the encanto fandom just done it way to much.
I agree and as another person apart of the community, I agree that just because he shapeshifts that doesn’t mean he’s gender fluid, how I see it is how all of the characters are implied to have had something that they felt they needed to keep to themselves out of fear of rejection or hatred from their family that it would be a cool idea to think that maybe Camilo was having a indentity crisis and was scared to figure out who he was in fear that who he was wasn’t “right” and with that idea it makes sense, at least to me, that some people can see that as a queer metaphor because it’s something a lot of us go through, and I honestly in general don’t think it’s a problem that people are making hcs about these chat being lgbtq+ or nerodivergent because 1) when people like and relate to a character they tend to project some characteristics onto those characters and 2) if it’s not the only thing the person is caring about when it comes to the movie they aren’t really “making it something its not”, I still 100% understand and somewhat relate to the main message of the story, but the story is also character oriented and I think it’s a sweet hc to hc Camilo as gender fluid. No he isn’t canonically gender fluid but it’s not hurting anyone to think that it’s a fun idea.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with head cannons but when they take away the original meaning of something (and the original representation) then it becomes problematic. There’s nothing inherently wrong in saying the mirabel is bi but when you use that to try and explain the actions she does and other’s actions towards her that’s problematic, it’s taking away the original message of the story. Whenever people of colour get a movie about them, white queers will try to find a way to relate to characters by throwing in lgbt+ headcanons, this has been happening for years, and it comes to the point where ppl forget the point of the movie and just focuss on their sexuality. It's almost a form of privilege where they try to change the characters to something that they see in themselves just because they can, not because it's right. Take antonio for example, people headcanoning him as a zoophile, like what? or Luisa as trans which is just racist, and it's not even straight people doing this either. Not to mention that queer poc are even being bullied by the white queers when we speak out how they are erasing the meaning of the movie, they will tell us it is canon cause i said so and ignore anything else about the movie because they can't relate to the generational trauma until all people remember from it is the sexualities that aren't even canon in the first place but are just used to house people under the relatablility factor.

As a part of lgbtq(I’m not from any Latin countries or cultures but have friends who are) to me focusing everything on lgbtq headcanons does really come off the wrong way, it makes it look like you don’t care about the actual message of the movie. And it’s also a problem for me when they stereotype lgbtq people with their headcanons wish is something I do see often not just with headcanons but with media in general. But it’s okey to have headcanons as long as it like I said doesn’t overshadow the movies meaning and doesn’t stereotype lgbtq people.
Agree. As both a POC and LGBTQ+ member. Having headcanons are not an issue, just like the headcanon that Luca is queer in general. The only issue is, is when you begin to push that headcanon and your reasonings is stereotypical. Luisa has been called a transgender because she appears masculine. That’s a bit concerning since it gives off transphobic and sexist vibes. A cis woman CAN be physically strong, maybe not grab thousands of boulders but can be fit in general. A cis woman can be a physical worker in general. And to generalize trans women as “a “man” like person with woman features” is uncomfortable imo. Headcanons Luisa as trans for reasonable reasons is fine. Just like headcanning Isabel as lesbian or aroace. That is, that technically the bigger issue is overall pushing stereotypes over the actual ethnic family story. Headcanons are personal, and usually aren’t canon. If someone believes Luisa is a trans woman and someone just believes she’s a physically strong cis woman, that is not an issue.

The “make everyone queer” thing is a problem in almost every single fandom, but the problem with people doing it with this specific group of people (encanto) is that their culture and heritage plays a huge part so it’s kinda offensive to the culture when people make everyone in the movie gay/lesbian/bisexual.

Totally! As an LGBTQ+ person, it feels weird how some members of the community think that gender and sexuality tie into everything. A female character can be trying to be perfect and can not want marriage without being a lesbian. A woman can be big and beefy without being a trans woman. A character who can shapeshift could be symbolizing something other than gender fluidity or symbolizing nothing at all. The Camilo headcanons always feel the worst to me because all of them ignore themes of the movie, but as a gender-nonconforming person, I don’t like how characters that can shapeshift and aliens are pretty much the only ones allowed to be like me. It glamorizes and others something I just want to be normal. It’s similar with Isabella, since as an asexual person it feels annoying when a character who expresses that they don’t want to marry someone is automatically gay, when there are so many other options that can still be queer, and so many that aren’t queer but are still interesting. Neurodivergent headcanons also go into murky water because they can sometimes go off of stereotypes or in this case people misunderstanding a culture. That’s generally my problem as an author with a lot of queer and neurodivergent headcanons, even as someone who is a part of those groups. It’s okay to have them if you relate to the character, but don’t treat it as gospel and don’t ignore important aspects of a character and story because you think your interpretation is more valuable. It’s some “death of the author” crap people are on where they think their interpretation of the text matters more than the intention and content of the text. Headcanons are fine if they’re respectful, but they’re so often not that it makes me mad.

The part about the author is so true and what I found so frustrating about head canon being taken too far. Saying, "I wish they had made this person (blank)." Or, "As a (blank), I can kind of relate to this person to some extent." Or even, "I have a theory that this person is like this because of (blank)." Are one thing, and I don't think that it's particularly bad, but saying, "THIS FICTIONAL PERSON THAT YOU WROTE IS GAY AND THAT'S A FACT! IT'S BASICALLY CANON AT THIS POINT BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T HAVE A BOYFRIEND." Or worse, "YOU BETTER CONFIRM IT OR ELSE YOU'RE HOMOPHOBIC!" Feels so entitled. It's like, you didn't write the story. The author did. Write your own story and characters if you want representation, or at least encourage companies to create new stories with representation. It also feels disingenuous to say that you're a fan of this person work when you're basically butchering the characters completely to fit what you want it to be. "I love this story, but let me twist your words completely to make it sound like a completely different story by changing the characters and the meaning behind the plot." Frankly, it just seems disrespectful to the artist, to say the least. It's okay for a gay person to relate to a story, and I even think it's okay to say that you wish they were gay, but sometimes, people take it too far and act like they're the ones who have the final say on someone else's hard work and take their headcanon VERY seriously.

The "knock on wood" thing is also related to superstitions. Here, in some Central and South American countries, when someone says that something bad is gonna happen, we say "toca madera" and proceed to knock on something made of wood. This is done with intentions of attracting good luck and distance the bad, wishing that everything goes well.
Yeah and in the Danish dub they said "knock knock knock on wood to pretend its a table" in denmark when you say smth and wanna like do the knock on wood thing. You knock under a table or wood table to like- erase it. So bruno saying "pretends it's a table" still made alot of sense
alternatively, an argument that lands between the two sides of this debate: we shouldn’t demonize interpretation of media. it’s totally fine for a lesbian to see themselves in isabela or for a person with ocd to see themselves in bruno, because at the end of the day, the piece of media itself neither confirms nor denies these things necessarily. and i’m saying this as a person who doesn’t even agree with half these headcanons. they’re just opinions, whether they’re dumb ones or not lol. the real problem is people insisting that these things are confirmed by the movie somehow. or worse still, insisting that the filmmakers are cowards for NOT confirming them when there is so much concrete representation to be appreciated in encanto, representation that we should be encouraging the continuance of by stating how much we appreciate it!! interpretation is fine and can be a starting point for healthy debate amongst people who enjoy any piece of media, but it also should not be forced upon its creators. especially when those creators have done something really meaningful that we should be encouraging in future films! you’re always gonna catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
It reminds me of what happened when people thought Luca was a getting out of the closet analogy and the CREATOR said it wasn't but if people looked at the movie like it, it was fine by him. And then people were angry at him because he said he didn't thought the movie like that sort of thing
remember: having headcanons or relating to a character isn't bad. but making the movie all about that and forgetting the actual purpose of the movie is the worst thing, especially when the movie goes over very sensitive topics. I still think that disney should give more representation to minorities, but that doesn't mean that those minorities have to take over the entire film.
Except the reason this movie gets a lot of these interpretations is precisely because the themes of family trauma and failing to live up to the expectations of your elders resonates with LGBT+ people. That's the opposite of forgetting about the themes of the movie.

As a Colombian, i was kinda upset when people ACTUALLY believe that Bruno is neurodivergent just because he says "random" stuff or has some "ticks", when I think it's clearly implied that Bruno is superstitious. The saying "knock on wood" it's a very common saying here in Colombia (and in many countries as well) when someone it's trying to prevent something bad to happen, a bad omen. It's kinda like a manifestation. Bruno doesn't act "quirky", he is just someone who pass through the curse of people blaming him for every little bad thing that happened to them. Dolores little "hm!" it's a sound that many people in Colombia made especially after finishing a sentence when they are gossiping, but her sound is a little more exaggerated and squeaky. I find really sad that people made superficial headcannons that can be really mean, like Louisa being transexual just because she is buff. That doesn't mean that if you are part of the LGBTQ+ community or neurodivergent community you can't identify to the characters, that is completely fine! these characters where made so people can see themselves in the characters even if they aren't hispanic. However, it seems that some people forget the meaning behind the movie and try to minimize the characters ONLY to their gifts and nothing else. I like diverse representation of many communities in the media, but some little "headcannons" can be more harmful than what you might think. So if you don't understand something about a culture, please try to inform yourself.

My friend calls this the SpongeBob effect Context: You see in the years since SpongeBob SquarePants aired there has been controversy surrounding the main character and his alleged homosexuality but Steven Hillenburg confirmed that SpongeBob is not homosexual but in fact asexual and that everything such as his lustful expressions to his friends and pretty much everything in existence is platonic love. Unsurprisingly even after the creator himself made confirmation on Spongebob's sexuality years ago, people in fan groups don't consider the creators claims as fact and consider Spongebob an icon of something he's not and ship him with other characters because "they can". Hence why he called it the Spongebob effect.
I didn’t like how people took the head canons and acted like it was actual representation saying stuff like “Camilo is the gender fluid representation I’ve always wanted” when wouldn’t it be better to have actual confirmed representation? I know that’s what I would prefer instead of having to force in on characters like Camilo.

And I think it’s fine to make head canons as long as you don’t take from the actual point of the movie like a lot of people have. I’m also latina so when people take away from the beautiful Columbian culture and message of the movie it hurts me. I was so happy to finally have a movie with good latine representation and I hope soon that Disney makes a movie with good representation for the lgbtq+ community and other minorities too
@@PequnaSol Just because the movie has a lot of people headcannoning characters doesn’t mean large chunk of these also don’t appreciate the Columbian culture of the movie, I think, granted, maybe people don’t appreciate it as much as someone who can relate to it. I think the theme of intergenerational trauma is also very appreciated in the movie I've seen people talk about.

What mainly pissed me off is that people say that Isabella is now lesbian just because she rejected one man, just because she did doesn't make her a lesbian. Maybe she doesn't like him? Maybe she isn't ready for a relationship? Or maybe she doesn't wanna date or marry anybody at all. There's nothing wrong in wanting representation, but. Your literally taking away what the movie is trying to say and making into something YOU want.
and there is it right there. trying to change something that already has an identity. This has been going on A LOT in modern media. people forcing their views and feelings onto pieces of media that are already telling another story. why can't people just look at something for what it is and not what they want it to be?
Yeah, she never said or hinted she didn't like boys, she just said that she was going along with the marriage because that's what her family expected of her. She's been playing the perfect child her entire life, and that included her relationship with him. I totally get people wanting more representation in media, but it's forced stuff like this, and God forbid the mha Fandom, that's contributing to the negative association of having LGBTQ characters in TV shows and movies.

I'm not really part of the fandom for that show myself, but I do watch occasional videos and read occasional fanfics, and about 80-90% of the ones I've seen have at least one character being gay, even if they're not in canon, but more often have most of class 1-A being gay. It's so prominent that a "lyric prank" video featuring mha even outright said "I'm pretty sure almost everyone in the class is gay- at least in fanon." And I've heard all about how bad some of the fans treat the author.
I feel like it's wrong to say Camilo is gay just because he dances in an expressive way? Or whatever the reason is, like, how are men supposed to act in a not strictly masculine way if they're immediately called gay for it? Of course there's nothing wrong with being gay but come on, not every ever so slightly feminine guy is gay
Yes, I find it ironic that people want to break down toxic masculinity stereotypes, but as soon as someone acts even a little bit flamboyant, people are quick to call out "GAY!" How is that any different from bullies who use it as an insult? You're still basing from assumptions that men shouldn't act a certain way. Let's normalize the idea that straight men can be effeminate too.
@@Arterismos at this point I think it's because of the lack of gay characters in disney that people assume he is gay. But yeah stuff like that is a problem, it reinforces the stereotype that everyone who is gay is flamboyant. Most people don't know it but Toxic Masculinity is a problem that requires fixing from Straight men and LGBTQ+ men. One side should stop using gay as a insult as well as assuming anyone who acts just a bit flamboyant is gay and the other side shouldn't assume any boy who acts a bit flamboyant is gay and should know that two boys can also just be friends even if they do some stuff typical male friend groups don't do. Also Camilo wasn't given a sexuality so you can Headcanon his sexuality but you can't make it canon.
it's even weirder because Camilo is literally 15. a lot of these characters are either minors or have barely become adults and they're forcing these ideas onto them. Luisa is said to be 19, and people are trying to say that she's either transgender or lesbian- same with Isabela, who's like.. 20 something. they're young people, who were forced into molds by their grandmother. i don't understand why people just immediately assume there's some kind of message about sexuality or gender when it can be completely different, and not only that, they hardly know who they are. Camilo is literally meant to be an allegory for identity crisis from my understanding, it's just so insane when these characters are represented as people who are being held under a specific mold. it doesn't immediately mean it's tying into how most people who are LGBTQ+ have to feign acting a certain way around particular people- maybe, just maybe, it's about people being forced into being a person they don't want.
As a gay person the whole "if he is a certain way that isn't masculine, he must be gay" is infuriating, like camilo is just a guy, you can't tell his sexuality from his mannerisms. In their scramble to represent the LGBTQ they themselves became homophobic
I headcanon him as a trans guy because, well, it makes me happy and not dysphoric. Not because of any Way he act, but because he is such a transistion goal for me
