Most people I know gave up their desktop and use their phones or laptops for looking up stuff. I'm old and love my 37 inch monitor. I was think about building another desktop this year since the price of video cards are coming down. Great video thanks Liron.

really depends on what you do. A laptop is great if you need the portability and since many people don't like being hunched over the small screen and keyboard, they use an external monitor anyways. I use my laptop when I travel but when I am home or in the studio, desktop with a large monitor wins 100% of the time.

A desktop computer can do things that other devices can't. I have burned up every laptop I had multitasking, stock trading etc... I got a liquid cooled desktop, and problem solved. No more overheating. I found another computer with a RTX 2080 Ti graphics card for about the price of a video card. The computer was barely used. People pays premium for new stuff.

I look back fondly on the days of computer fairs, or even browsing CompUSA, walking around, handpicking your parts, and building your own. I'm not as into now but it was super fun 20 some years ago. And yeah, now I'll just buy prebuilt, less work and really isn't any more expensive. As to the AS6, I'm a hard core nvidia guy.

LOL, forgot about CompUSA. I used to do the same, keep an eye out for deals. Same here, don't have much interest anymore for building systems. Especially when "flagship" graphics cards and mobos cost as much as they do these days. To spend several thousand every five years or so on upgrading just doesn't make sense anymore. Digging through Slickdeals every month 4 deals.

Thanks for this review. I've personal;y built over 15 computers for myself over the years and most of them were full towers with keyed removable racks But a couple years ago, a lightning strike destroyed my full tower (I still have the remains of it in my garage) and I've been using an old laptop donated to me ever since.. Al l5 homes in my block suffered electrical damage and even Conmcast had to send out several trucks to repair the damages over several days. I desperately need the CPU power to be hosting several hypervisor images to be doing my computer labs and making and testing SOC's and various cybersecurity-related training.

For me: Yes. I am using a HX99G since a few months now, and I am totally happy with it. For sure, it´s not the same performance as a high end PC, but microchips came so far nowadays, that FullHD (not 4K) gaming is absolutely possible with all details, even in modern AAA games, on Ultra, or at least, mostly at high @ stable 60fps. 8core, or even 12core CPU´s with up to 5 GHZ, tiny dedicated GPU solutions (RX6600M, 8GB RAM on the HX99G), and super fast RAM, M.2 NVME SSDs will result in very fluid operation. For sure, there are people, who want to play in 4k and with 144Hz/fps, especially online in competitive fps games. For them, there will be always a market. But for the masses, I would say, a MiniPC will do the job very fine, with low temps, low noise levels and - most important, these days: With very low energy use, and with much lower energy costs. And my rig is running at leat 15-20 hours daily, 365 days a year. That sums up!

A larger PC with room for expansion should not be ignored, especially if you think you might upgrade. Many of my older PCs have had a second life reconfigured for another use e.g. as a NAS and for that extra drive bays are very welcome. Also remember you pay extra for small.
@HeavyInstinct
@HeavyInstinct Год назад
Mini PCs also have room for expansion. The memory can be upgraded just as easily as it can in a desktop. Extra hard drives can be added and some even have the ability to add an external graphics card. Obviously they don't have the ability to replace a desktop size computer in every situation. However they definitely have the ability to find a "second life" as you say. I definitely don't think we're seeing "the end of the desktop PC" quite yet but I think it's the beginning of the end. The prices will continue to come down and the smaller size will eventually become the norm. At least that's my opinion. I'm not saying you're wrong about the usefulness of a desktop. I have one myself. But I think eventually the vast majority of people with a desktop in their home will have one of these minis as opposed to a big tower.
@clmBerserker
@clmBerserker Год назад
@@HeavyInstinct I dont know man, as most cheap stuff will be always be bigger, and larger stuff=more stuff can be added, the smaller it is the more high tech it is and price will always be bigger because of that. So both in terms of power and in terms of price larger desktops will win out. Not saying there wont be any interest for a these tiny things some people have the money for it, and the are willing to pay. Maby in the future when power becomes so high that it looses importance and value.

Budget prebuilt systems can offer a lot for under $1000. More for your money than a mini PC. I think mini PCs are great if you want a new computer at a very low price. If you are going to be spending over $500 you would be better off buying a desktop assuming portability is not a concern.

A couple of years ago when the Rona was gaining steam, my data entry job sent us to work from home. They had these little back boxes. I asked, "Is that the router?" "No, it's the computer." Although the cheap company did not want to pay for a dedicated connection and sponged of my home setup, the lags and weirdness were not the fault of the computer as far as I could tell. It would have been interesting if I had been able to have other software and see how it performed.

These machines already use significantly LESS energy, thus lower wattage. IF you need more USB connectivity, add a hub; or shop around for a model that has the connectivity that you want. Not only do these machines use significantly less power, the noise signature is insanely low in most cases. I left my Dell desktop on for about the first two months of use; but in the end, I ended up turning it off because I wasn't using it. The room became so quiet it was unbelievable. For the past 5 years prior, that desktop ran 24x7. Had completely forgotten how quiet the room was with it off. Hardcore gamers are going to want to look elsewhere. But for most everything else, these mini's can hold their own.

I have a different type of minipc, about the size of your average computer fan, or a laptop hard drive. The issue with that is, there's essentially no gaming allowed. No fans, so it heats up pretty quickly. That, at least, looks like it has a fan or fans in it. I know it can play a game, but for how long? Also, the price wasn't listed. It's not much less than the computer I just bought from Cosco, and about the same price as the only other one on the shelves, the one that wasn't for gaming. One piece of information that maybe you should list is the vram. Most low spec games run on under 1g, but many Unity games, and No Man's Sky runs on at least 4. Most of the rigs I've seen for around $1k had about 8g vram, and this one is 12 with an integrated Nvidia card.

Fun fact, and I know this may be seem impossible to believe, but not everyone wants a gaming computer. There are in fact dozens of people who actually want a computer for work. Can you believe that? Imagine people who don't really care about No Man's Sky or Call of Duty. Seriously. Dozens.

As much as I like these mini systems, most people who need them are better served by other alternatives, such as a laptop (which has a built in screen, speakers and Webcam) a tv dongle (which is simple and connects well with your phone) a console (better gaming performance). This is really only useful for people who need the monitor real estate while needing moderate computing power.

"best games are on pc"is debatable - a matter of opinion really. As for requirements going down, this is just wrong - the new generation of consoles, unreal engine 5 and ray tracing are already massively increasing HW requirements and will continue to do so. Just look at vram requirements in hogwarts legacy and the last of us pc port or Spiderman remastered.

I love how you speak for "most people"...actually "most people" want value for thier money. A laptop of similar specs is much more expensive. "most people" connect it to an external monitor and keyboard anyways. Also "most people" dont have a need for portable - they work in the office or at home. Also "most people" dont want to pay insane repair bills when a laptop breaks. So instead of saying "most people", you could say "hey personally, I prefer X"

Yeah, these minis don't have dedicated GPU's and that's kind of their main drawback, but they're definitely good for day to day use and dare I say even better because their power draw is miniscule compared to that of a full tower. Of course, gaming on such a machine will not give the greatest framerates, but it can surely run crysis. You got to give it to them, they did a pretty good job on this one and I wouldn't be surprised if these become a go to option for most homes in the future. Of course, businesses will definitely opt for these as they always have, but with the way things have been going the market seems to be growing for domestic use too.

A typical desktop computer costs about $27/year to leave running continuously. Even high-end desktops typically power parts down so much, even without sleeping, they use almost nothing. Realistically, the power savings on these devices might only be $50 over a five year lifetime. Given the price swings of PCs (from $250 to $5,000+) cost of power is almost nothing.

I still prefer and love old desktops. I will still buy them over the new computers. But it must be at least P4 and have Windows XP installed. The more installed connectivity the better.They are flexible enough for my research. No Windows 10 or 11 (they can't do what I need)! Servers with Xeon are also exceptable. Fully functional only. Showroom quality. I am absolutely not interested in any of the new mini machines. Old laptops too (same condition). I'm also looking for one sharp local tech to keep them humming. You buy what you want/need. That's what I want. I use them two at a time.

I Just want to say a little bit of feedback when you have showed the gaming performance. 1. Fps counter 3rd party software or the inbuilt steam fps counter shows how well the game runs 2. Games are usually mostly reliant on the GPU. You can see the massive difference in GPU-0 on the task manager 3:27 (before) and 5:15. 3. Mentioning like the graphics settings are set by which is usually high, medium, low or custom. Overall great video, I just want to mention these parts in the performance of playing a game that you have missed. Hope you hit 1M.

Thanks for the notes John! As I said, I don't do "benchmarks" - its not that kind of channel :) I use devices in the real world for weeks before I make the video showing my experience. Obviously gamers will want a dedicated GPU. For a non-gamer who likes to play here and there, I ran my games without any issues. Are games playable without stutter? yes mostly at 1920x1080. Change it to higher res and they do. Will I train with this for an upcoming eSports event? nope. Will I continue to get smoked in Counter Strike? definitely

I decided to spring for a Mini-PC about a month ago. Wanted a Windows 11 machine. But a smaller footprint. After a few issues with some machines (mostly Fan and Ethernet instability), I finally got one from AceMagician. So far, no problems. I hooked it up to My Lg 65" and Nakamichi Shockwafe Soundbar. Also bought a Bluetooth/Wireless Mouse/Keyboard Combo. I still have My old HP Desktop which I installed with Linux Mint some years ago. But this Mini-PC has been a BLAST so far. And it's also upgradeable. Which was also what I wanted.

A good machine for the price, although the gpu is a gtx 1050 ti equivalent so some folks might want a traditional pc for more powerful graphics. But for a lot of games it's fine. Build times for Unreal Engine might be a little long since there's not many cores, but there's certainly enough memory and storage.

You'll have to forgive me if this comes across as a stupid question(am NOT the kind of tech expert I wish I could be, lol)but... can you get this with windows 7? you showcased it having windows 10 & 11, does this mean you CAN'T have it with w7? I've been feeling a bit paranoid that my desktop machine may one day bite the dust... and its kinda been subconsciously eating away at me... am also curious of this type of machine's longevity, how long can it last before it succumbs to hard drive damage or other components just break? and if you HAVE to get this with w10 or 11, do the updates on these newer os's still kill your machine with bloat over time? or.. have they stopped doing that with the updates? is there even a way to actually TURN these updates off? last I checked... there were settings to turn that shit off in w10 but they DIDN'T actually work. . . ...am scared for my future. . . .
@LironSegev

I have no idea if it will run Windows 7. Since these mini pc use solid state drives of some type, they are less susceptible to damage like a hard drive of the olden days. Updates are a must but you can disable non-essential updates and just get the security updates.

Man, i was like you once, as i mentioned in my 1st comment my 1st desktop PC was a pentium 3 from 20 yrs ago which came with windows XP (it took 3-5 min just to boot up... I'm not kidding)... windows 10 has been discontinued and will no longer be supported soon (if it hasn't been already) so i wouldn't bother putting it on 1 of these mini pc's since a lot of software and hardware that you might need will no longer work for it... Don't be afraid of new technology. Your best bet is to go for it and learn as you go by following channels like this one on RU-vid...there are a lot of inexpensive mini pc's to choose from that might suit your needs...mine was only $337

WOULDN'T move up even if I had that option). As far as needing newer hardware and software goes... I haven't been needing much of anything really. though... thanks for the pep talk I guess. though, sooner or later am not gonna have much choice in the matter as soon as my computer inevitably becomes toast. . .

It's not the end. Desktop computers house extreme PC components such as powerful processors and video cards that have to start big before they're miniaturized and become smaller and smaller to reside in notebooks and thin laptops. Case in point, a gaming laptop or notebook can't beat a gaming desktop in terms of power and heat dissipation.
