I can see what Yamaha were thinking, but to me, the bike is screaming out for twin round headlights. I know that they were trying to make it look like a race fairing, but that tiny rectangular LED just isn't right. Thanks for the review.
Agreed. Will be interesting to see what Yamaha might do at this model's next major face-lift. The aftermarket people might have something waiting in the wings, too.
@@markfranks1329 I'm with you. The LED kinda makes it look like some kind of iron man helmet from the cyclops timeline. View from the side: 🫦🤌 View from front: 🤖
Love that , "the old man does'nt use a phone " Correct ! Old people RIDE bikes and could'nt be bothered with phones ! We know where we're going and when we stop, we look at MAPS and them know exactly, more a less where we're going !! You are NEVER lost on a bike ,just having more fun !!
Just got back from a main dealer after staring and drooling at this bike for about an hour. I will be returning in a month or so to make a purchase. Normally photos make a bike look better than what they are but in this case, this bike is absolutely stunning in real life.
Love the video, I like that you guys are experimenting with bikes you wouldn't typically choose. It's brave stepping out of your comfort zone. I like all of your videos. I have followed you for years. I understand why some people may not have fully understood why you reviewed bikes you knew you wouldn't like. But I admire you for trying something different! There is something there in stepping out of your comfort zone. Keep up the great work, with the old man back, 100K subs, new project with the V7, its all looking up. I wish you both all the best! You deserve it! I tell you something I would love to see at some point. A challenge that sets the two of you against one another. I would love to see your competitive sides drawn out for a video. Just a thought 😊.
I had bikes that looked like this the first time round and this looks fantastic...who wants practicality in a bike? If you want that buy a car! The weight on your wrists/arms helps the braking, the weight transfer to the front wheel pushes the tyre into the tarmac.... hence more grip. Now where's my Yamaha paddock jacket and Nike Air Pegasus trainers... you've got to look the part! Thanks for showing a beautiful bike off shame that Akra is so quiet ☹️
One day they mite bring back the RD. it’s a nice looking bike the back part should of been a inch half lower would of been nice to take a passenger the exhaust would look nice with one the other side and a belly pan.
I own one, and i love everything about it, not as harsh as my 5VY R1, but quick flickable and fun. Gets loads of positive attention from other road users, so not for the shy.
In the first few seconds, I thought you'd gotten your hands on another vintage bike to show us. This looks very cool, and it sounds good with that Akrapovic exhaust.
To my eyes, definitely the best looking of the 900 triples. Yamaha has done a good job in reproducing the silhouette of the old YZR500. By the way, if you like the style of this, have a look at the XSR900 fitted with Velocity Moto's RD500 body kit.
Velocity Moto’s RD500 kit for the XSR is cheaper, better looking and probably more comfortable. Still, I like that they are making all these retro looking bikes nowadays.
Great overview guys, I would probably buy one if I was younger and rotator cuff problems and arthritis free. It's a beautiful machine and reminds me of race bikes of my youth!
Interestingly enough I had the standard XSR900 but traded it for a V7 special. Occasionally I do still miss it, amazing engine and quickshifter but probably a bit too spicy for me.
Like you, I prefer retro bikes. But machines are great, cars, trucks, and bikes. While I wouldn't buy a bike like the one reviewed, I don't have to. Your review covered that curiosity. Toss in that odd one once in a while, it keeps it interesting.
Having had sports bikes in the 90s, this is a bike that really appeals to me, looks great and that engine is a cracker. Must admit, I’m with the old man, not phone on the bars for me. Agree the upswept pipes up under the seat looks great, but in places like Australia, with pipes like that, the seat can get seriously hot.
Odd that dealerships have press/demonstrator bikes without the optional lower fairing fitted. It looks so much better with it. As for the colour scheme then the red and white plus yellow reminds me of Ayrton Senna in his Marlboro McLaren F1 cars.
Great video as always guys. However, coming from the film making background it's always a mistake to wear shades in a video, you'll find that people watching would prefer to see your eyes! Just saying. Keep up the great work. Video quality is very nice 👍
I love this bike! As a biker from the 90's, I have so many fond memories of watching Wayne Rainey on his Yamaha in Malborough cigarette livery. With the sports belly pan fairing as well, it simply looks incredible. Try parking it up outside a café/pub and you'll see people who remember the same thing and the nostalgia this bike brings
I completely agree with the Ol man on the exhaust positioning nowadays. I absolutely miss the under tail exhaust even if it does put more weight on the top of the bike!
Yamaha releasing a sports bike that actually speaks to me. Though as someone already mentioned, lacking twin round headlights is a unfortunate, though I'm sure the after market will quickly rush in to develop that
I have an affinity with triples, having owned a Yam XS750E back in the day. It had the most amazing sound from a fairly open 3 into 1 aftermarket pipe. I think the GP would also sound really good with an open pipe.
Apart from a few small nitpicks like the digital screen instead of proper analog gauges I think they nailed the look of this bike! And that triple sounds amazing. But I don't want a bike with this kind of power, I just wouldn't be able to use it properly without putting myself in serious danger, or at the very least put my license in serious danger. My A2 restricted XSR 700 already feels quick enough to be honest! If they make a XSR 700 GP and borrow the suspension and brakes from the R7, that would be my perfect sports bike from Yamaha.
Congrats for setting a little bit aside from your comfort zone. This was in fact a delightful surprise! Thank you for that. I’m all agree that Yamaha have nailed it with this one. Good for them. I really don’t appreciate the transformer design they’ve been using lately and that’s the one reason why I don’t ride a MT-10, which is a Yamaha bike that technically is a gem, but that front design and the pirated lights…too much adversity, can’t stand them. Keep up the good work guys!👍🏻
Under-tail exhaust: they add a lot of weight, they pose heat problems for electronics inside the subframe, they move motorcycle weight balance to the rear. That's why they aren't doing this stuff anymore. The GP is a beautiful bike. It would ultimately hurt my back, shoulders, elbows, wrists, and neck. I'd go for the standard XSR900 and pop a Powerbronze Cobra fairing on it.
Great review of a lovely looking bike. Surprised you both liked it but just goes to show we can all have our horizons widened. Keep up the great work fellas.
I hate sports bikes. I hate how they look, I hate how they sound, and I hate how people ride them. But that is quite beautiful. I’m not sure about the headlight, but the fairings are really nice. Nice 80s vibes.
I am not interested in sport bikes at all, but I agree that this is the best looking one I have seen in a long time. I guess you could call it retro sport. And if we must have golden fork legs (as it seems we must), then this is the way to go, nicely subdued.
Great to see the OL Man waxing lyrical about a "sports bike" however he's not wrong , Yamaha have really nailed it with the XSR 900 GP, it's a fabulous looking bike, sounds great and is excellent value for money, what's not to like.
I like it and would definitely have one as a second bike. At 67 I'd have no problem with the riding position or the performance for the road and would prefer it to a RE.
OMG I never thought I would see the day. Both of you saying a plastic sports bike is beautiful. I take it you guys weren't riding back in the 80s FZ 400 FZ 750 GPZ 900 RX 1000 original GSXR 750, speed Triple 750/900 original, Moto Guzzi sport 1100. Old man you should be teaching Dacy about these sport retro machines. Tell me both that Guzzi 1100 sport is not better looking than any Triumph??😮😉
Forgot to mention, since you love this retro look, find a Guzzi V7 racer to put on the channel. Id love one of those in the garage for sure, the one with the chrome tank and leather tank strap.
I am 5ft 9, 180 lbs, 49 years old and I am comfortable on an Anniversary edition R7, I am fitter than most though and I may feel different in 10 years. I will defer to my Triumph Tiger 1050 if I am doing a bit of light touring for more than 2 days. This may slide itself in neatly betweem the two for a bit of 90's sportbike nostalgia. I am still hopeful of the R9 making an appearance soon.
It is a handsome bike. First ive seen of it, actually. It does look like it could've been ripped right out of the pages of some 80s motorcycle rag, with the exception of the headlight. I will stick with my naked version though. I bet some anniversary colors would look great!
When the MT range came out I thought oh nice, however they keep redressing the MT range with new coverings. Look at the MT 07, the new tenere 7 is just an MT07 on a change of clothes. The XSR Rane is just the MT range again in another guise. Now this GP900 again is an MT09 like the Tracer . I'm not putting Yamaha down as I do love them, but come on Yamaha give is another good 4 cylinder again like the FZ range. Must admit my best Yamaha I ever had was the MT01, I wonder if they are sticking to 3 cylinders for the euro 5? Love the review
so, i know what i like. i was watching this video for 10 seconds and i am in. looking it up, the front fairing is not part of the american motorcycle style, i want that front cowling on the bike. that makes my 1990s style sport bike i love. i would buy that bike in a heart beat. but i want your look of the bike, not what they are showing on the site of yamaha.
40 years ago, my kind of bike, but comfort is more your thing as you get older and I'm afraid if I had this bike i would spend most of my time at the cyropracter. A quick nod to fashion the old man really looks so much better wearing those blue riding jeans than those white things.
Hi Guys Very very good channel. I really enjoy it .... when there are subtitles. Why some videos do not have subtitles? It's a real pity for people who have a bad hearing or do not understand easily englsif. Please bring back the subtitles on all vids. Many thanks Keep on rolling
Gorgeous Yamaha! I would put on a lower fairing and a functional wind screen. Darcy I rode multiple Guzzies yesterday and loved the v7. For the street and just riding for mental health it's brilliant, lots of character. I would do exhaust, an rcs master upgrade the single m50 in the front, add sometime like SW Motec legend bags and call it done.)
1980's Yammy YZR500 style GP bike colours (Marlboro?) is great, but would love to see an original period bike alongside this tribute! Like with the design of cars, I'd bet a full English breakfast that this tribute is about 50% larger? Air cooling and simpler engineering overall, makes packaging the bike much smaller. Just a thought! Maybe (unlike many other reviewers) when looking at bikes paying homage to earlier machinery, we can see the originals alongside to see how much of the original DNA or "spirit" has been included in the newer bikes?
a nice bike forsure BUT.. a "retro" sport bike.. that cant keep up with the thing its retroing.. when you can find the real deal sport bike of the era its mimiking.. out run it.. at a quarter of the price & still as much fun & comfort.. dont get me wrong its a great bike but it supposedly.. took yamaha 4 years to design & develop.. FFS thats pure marketing BS modern trendies just gobble over.. Yamaha fit a great race frame on a bike that fits no class to race.. this.. is what the 700 twin should have been for the super twins mid weight racer class.. ill stick with my faster, quicker retro Thunderace for retro ride days..good review too 👍 cheers 🇳🇿🇳🇿nz
Personally I love it, great retro look. but im an older guy pushing 60 years old. I won’t trade my speed twin or GS for it. But if I was into filling my garage with bikes this would be one to have.
The only problem with this bike is its not going to be available in Canada, This is not something I would buy at 59 years old but back in the 80's that is what I loved. great bike. There are RZ500 Kits available for the XS900 as well but this one is done by Yamaha its nice.
Super review as per usual. Had a look at one of these at Yamaha the other day. That headlight looks horrendous. Certainly not for me however it’s a motorbike so you gotta have a look. Not sure who this is aimed at. To slow for a sports bike enthusiasts maybe aimed at new sport bike riders however a bit pricey for a youngster. Anyway great review.
