Quite prophetic now that, in 2023, the pier is closed to the public and is being allowed to rot and is currently corroding and gasping its last breath.

Brilliant. I'd forgotten quite how ropey the pier had become in the 80s and 90s.

It's a real shame for the policy of this shortsited city and very sad for citizens and tourists, equaly ! Mayors and councillors moaning all days long about the dying out of british seaside villages, being popular in former times. Is it a wonder, when they tear down worthful infrastructure and close attractions, on the other hand ? What in the hell do they expect ? I would have replaced only the rolling stock by old or modern trams and would have extended the tracks through the downtown centre, ending at the railway station. With direct connection to all the other places of interest along the way, like the Narrow Gauche Train around the town's park pond. "Transportainment", a mixture of transport and entertainment, is a very new idea from USA and with great success. In deed, it is nothing else than what Blackpool has done very successfuly, already within the last decades. To dismentle the Pier Railway was not a solution at all. In no way. It is a disinvestment in your country's and people's future ! Warm greetings from Germany ❣
