There was a point earlier in my collecting (2020/first quarter of 2021) where I definitely was buying into the multiple releases. BUT, only for 2 reasons: 1) The artist/bands I really liked/loved would have me purchasing multiple variants because I was very much into the record or wanted to support as much as I was able. 2) I was also (at the time, no longer am) buying into the resell game & would purchase 2 of a record if I knew it would become valuable. One for myself & one to resell at a later date. Occasionally I still find myself doing one of these 2 things, but for the most part I've stopped. Especially after my fiasco with this 1 album & it's multiple variants that took 5ever to arrive & the productions facilities were messing up, etc. *edit - The multiple variant thing nowadays is annoying, I'll mention Beartooth's "Below" record which had an ABSURD amount of variants. You're right about the capitalist part of the multiple variant game, all to reap in more money.
I, for one, can not wait for the bubble to burst. It will bring the price of vinyl back to "normal" and separate the die hard vinyl lovers from those who think it a fun fad. I do enjoy talking with new collectors, but will they hang around when there limited edition pressings are valued at $10? I don't know, but I'll be around to scoop up those collections, if the answer is no.
Hey Carlos - a thoughtful comparison you lay out here. Steve Carlson did a similar comp to baseball cards which rang similar to what you share here on comics. As someone who grew up in the 90’s and collected sports cards and comics, the over saturation of the market(s) really was a disappointment, especially to a younger collector who thought (at a minimum) one day the return would be comparable (at worst) to the initial spend (it wasn’t). I wonder if kids of similar ages collecting records now may be subject to similar experience. Certainly hope not! Cheers Buddie!
If the story/track/music doesn't sell as well they try to make it "colorful" and "bling" to sell it anyway. And I do think it is the beginning of an end of that "wave".... Sure there will be new waves, but that one is probably done for now... But I think that every wave will produce new lovers of art...sure the mass will leave it, but then again, they were in it just because of the hype anyways...
