The Ending Of The Irishman Explained

Martin Scorsese’s 2019 gangster film The Irishman feels like the culmination of all of his mob movies up to this point. The sweeping three-and-a-half-hour epic tells the story of Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), an Irish hitman who works for the mafia and eventually has to carry out a hit on his friend, Teamster boss Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). While many would expect the hit on Hoffa to be at the end of the film, the movie actually goes on for some time after his death, showing the decades of Frank Sheeran's life after the alleged crime. Here’s the explanation of the ending of The Irishman.

That's true, the criticism of Anna Paquin not speaking much i found it incredibly stupid. She's afraid of her father's action, she's silent because she's afraid, she barely speaks because of her father. Paquin has that talent in playing an emotional silent character and she pulled it off very well. i don't think she was wasted in the movie, Peggy'ss a filler to Frank's arc

The final shot of the door ajar is the same reason he wants to be buried I believe. He doesn't like things being final. And what's more interesting about that is that Jimmy also leaves the door ajar, further suggesting his guilt for killing him. And what's even more interesting about that is Jimmy Hoffa, as we know got cremated

The last scene shows the power of final forgiveness. Frank's daughter's refusal to forgive him finally leads him there. For several closing scenes, the young priest visits Frank, but is rebuffed by him when asked if he wants to confess his sins. When the priest leaves the room, Frank always asks him to "close the door"....except the last scene, showing Frank and the priest with his purple stole on, hearing his final confession. When the priest leaves, Frank asks him to leave the door open. That scene speaks for itself. The "door of forgiveness" has been opened to him, as it is to all who ask forgiveness, no matter our sin.

I know I’m really late to this video but I would like to share my opinion on the ending. I think, when Frank tells the nurse to leave the door open, he’s doing that because he doesn’t want it to be so final.

A) To be fair, Hoffa was notorious enough to be used as a joke on the Simpsons decades ater his death. So that is it. B) Depending on how specific Sheeran really was when confessing, a Catholic priest holds one of the great mysteries of American modern history: what really happened to Hoffa. And he just can say a word...

This movie, despite it being 3 hours long, I was fully invested in it. How could someone call this movie boring? Nothing short of amazing. Yes, the story is most certainly untrue. But it's not an account of what happened in real life. It's taken off of Frank Sheeran's biography "I heard you paint houses". In regards to the book, it's damn near accurate.

Peggy is the great inquisitor, she sees and knows everything that Frank does in silence , she has no way to know that Frank killed Jimmy. She knew and never forgives Frank, she closes the door for the forgiveness he is seeking. She had nothing to forgive him for, because he didn't do anything to her. She is a deity a deity that is in silence watching, she is always present , in the funeral in the baptize where she look in disdain to the mafia boys, she refuses the money trying tu buy her sympathy, is present as statue in the last scenes always watching in silence. The problem with this movie is not its storyline, but the actors. It's a movie that should have been done 20yrs ago. DeNiro looks like he needs oxygen during all the physical parts of the movie. I was embarrassed for him in the scene where he beats up the store owner who touches his daughter. The whole movie was about compensating for the diminished physicality of these aging actors. And don't get me wrong, I'm old and these actors were my idols for decades. I can just imagine millennial's watching this movie and saying WTF.....makeup and special effects can't compensate for over the hill actors.....sorry.
@kevinfetner7983
@kevinfetner7983 4 года назад
@M N Yes, he was, but he had almost no strenuous physicality in the movie. I know it was important to the story line to go back when the characters were younger, but you just can't prop up old age. IMO Scorsece should have used younger doubles of the actors. It's been done well before. Maybe it was an ego thing or maybe they didn't think anyone else could capture the DeNiro scowl. Obviously the older actors gave brilliant performances that were age specific to their real ages.....including towards the end of their lives.
