He still holds all 3 records for the triple. What he did in the Belmont was impossible, but I watched him do it. He became a personal treasure to all of us.
A treasure indeed! When he made the turn at the top of the homestretch, he looked down that long, long track and simply ran himself into immortal eternity,,,,, this was not about winning a race,,,,, this was about FOREVER …….
I agree. It's great that the film makers included the real Penny in the cloud. She went to every Belmont Stakes. She was there when finally a horse won the Triple Crown.
I never really watched horse racing until I heard all the talk about Secretariat. Saw the Preakness & Belmont on TV. Amazing horse. Then I bought the movie on DVD when it came out & I watch it a lot, especially when I feel down about something. Secretariat just inspires & sheds doubt better than any doctor could.
I LOVE this horse! The most magnificent animal that has ever lived! Perfect in every way! The horse that God built! Spectacular! But, he was surrounded by a great team that loved him! He raced on his own terms! ❤️
If you watch the original footage from the 1973 race, you will see that Ronnie never even used his whip from the third turn on. That horse won that race all on his own. Ronnie really did just let him run. Greatest Race Horse That Ever Lived.
Dam god can't get credit for anything sorry yes secretariat is God's creation the perfect horse to win by 30 plus an surging is so unbelievable if it wasnt seen by millions no one would beleive it he destroyed the feild an these are no scrubs he ran against its somthing no matter how many times i watch i get misty eyed no words can define it
One of my favorite facts about Secretariat - during the 1973 Kentucky Derby, not only did he become the first horse to run in in under two minutes, but each of his quarter split times was faster than the previous one.
They say Secretariat was huge, compared to other thoroughbreds, but that is a little misleading. He was 16.2 hands, as was Sham. That is on the larger size, but hardly notable. But what was huge about Secretariat was his girth - his chest - his ribcage. It had to contain that 22 pound heart, and those lungs - I don't know but i am betting they were bigger too. They needed special saddle girth straps to hold the saddle on that chest, and remember, when they started racing him - he was still growing. They kept having to replace the straps all that year, and he was in racing trim so even though he was known to be a big eater - there really was no fat on him when he was racing! Look at the pictures of him in full stride - note the muscles. On a man we would call him ripped!! And in that shape - this is what he could do. Also remember, his jockey Ron Turcoat said that at the end of the race - he was still accelerating, and did not want to stop. Hard to believe, but it seems we never saw him at full speed or know how far he could go before he had to stop accelerating - because in this race, he never stopped accelerating.
Congratulations to secretariat on the other hand shams owners should have never been able to own that horse period....... tells the jockey to run him until his heart explodes pure garbaggeeee also this could have gotten real interesting had SHAM had the same size Heart one last thing how about the little horse that could will never no???????
That's the wonderful Penny Chenery at .13 - it was a sweet touch for her to do a "cameo" in this film about her beloved horse, Secretariat. The movie naturally had a big focus on Penny's life and times, as well.
Even though it's Disney, my love of this horse pulls me... The Greatest race horse we will Ever see! In this clip when he rounds the last bend and that song starts.. I'm just jello every time...
Secretariat was just doing what GOD put him on this planet to do. When we do what GOD called us to do, we can't help but be CHAMPS! JESUS CHRIST is LORD FOREVER! Go out and be what GOD has called you to be and you will be the BEST!
Seabiscuit was a great story. Secretariat was the greatest creature that ever lived. His still standing records in the Triple Crown races is something that no human has ever matched in history..nor any horse. He INCREASED his speed the entire race in the KD & Belmont. He went from last to first in the tightest turn in the Preakness from the outside & never slowed down. His Belmont win is still the world record. No horse on the planet has ever matched him..or come within 10 lengths of his record.
Yes he did, Ronnie just let him run & when the play that song it really got to me because that's the song they play for him when they were washing him & he just love that sing. The greatest horse of all time
Penny at 2:40 FTW!!!! Secretariat ran like the wind. The scary part about that race...he was STILL pulling away when he crossed the finish line. I don't care what anyone says. He holds the record for the Preakness too in my book. Best Race Horse Ever. RIP.
I love this video, and get goose bumps every time I watch this.To me Big Red is the greatest th race horse of all time. Thank you for making this avaiablr for us Secratariet fans. Micheline Kribs ,rolla, MO. I love the movie and during the Kentucky derby I know Chick Andersons calls
After watching Secretariat run all other race horses seem so little, weak and pencil necked. He was a beautiful animal. So muscular, beautiful red coat and he had such a princely attitude. He was the king!
Yeah! ALL ... and I do mean ALL .... of the so-called horse experts ate their words that day. They all thought 3/4 of the way through the race that Secretariat was "going too damn fast." Those words are taken from ESPN's SportsCentury documentary on Big Red. The enormous red colt had his own agenda. This movie is terrific, by the way. And so was Seabiscuit.
Secretariat was the greatest racehorse to ever run the racetrack. There will never be a horse who could even come close to Secretariat’s Belmont performance
@mjc6184 Sec increased his speed throughout the KD & Belmont. He still holds both track records 38 years later. What he did in the Belmont has never been done in history, before or since, when he ran the Belmont. He not only increased his speed the ENTIRE race, after the 1st quarter mile, he broke the world track record EACH quarter mile & was still speeding up at the finish line. It defied the laws of nature. The SOLE athlete in history to accomplish that feat:-) We'll never see it again..
I just wish this movie didn't ignore her other really good horse Riva Ridge. He won the Derby the year before. I know they were building up the "underdog" narrative and it was a Disney movie. Sort of like how the Seabiscuit movie made War Admiral 18hands high when he also was a small horse (though still bigger than the Biscuit) But wasn't Riva a big part of the syndicate deal? It was still a big gamble. I do really like the movie. I just miss Riva's presence
Love the movie, but they should have used the actual race call. In 1973, the announcer didn't know what to say as Big Red got further and further from the other horses. A tremendous machine. Greatest horse in racing history.
Absolutely!!! Why didn't they use the original race call by Chic Anderson! I've thought that ever since I walked away from the theater to my car in the parking lot after seeing it. I loved the movie, but the substitute race caller really took away from what would have been an even more emotional moment.
There was some sort of lawsuit over that...but they Preakness on the TV was actual footage. This was such a hokey movie, and religious stuff was OVER THE TOP. Penny was NOT a religious type to that extent. Wish someone would make a GOOD movie about Secretariat...he deserves MUCH BETTER that this...
I had the pleasure of watching the greatest racehorse in history, in person. As many times that I’ve seen the movie or Secretariat’s race footage I still tear up. I even have a hard describing his brilliance to someone without getting emotional. Simply, the greatest racehorse in history!
@drumma4lyfe06 Yep...I read an article that Secretariat ran each successive quarter mile faster than the previous.....i.e...he kept on accelerating, which is insane to think. Looks like he would have taken off if the race was any longer! lol. Greatest ever.....and title will remain forever.
I saw this live in my parents home, all alone. I had just done some bong hits to get ready. I just sat there transfixed, not really comprehending what I was watching. It was like the one gentleman said "Impossible!" When he was coming down the stretch, I realized I had tears running down my eyes and couldn't understand why. The Belmont Stakes, third race of the Triple Crown, .June 9, 1973, the greatest single event I have ever seen! I don't like the divine aspect they put on this. The biggest beef I have with the movie, is the playing the gospel song as he comes to the wire. But it's easy to understand as the man said in the documentary. "It's like God whispered in his ear and said 'Go'." I believe Secretariat still holds the track record in each of the 3 races.
I imagine, had Penny's father been healthy during his later years, Secretariat would have never been a racehorse. Penny would not have needed to come and help out at the estate had that been the case. O.O
Secretariat would have been a race horse. He was bred for it but had Penny's father lived he would probably have raced in his four year old year. Bexause he was syndicated to save the farm he went to stud after Woodbine.
