I'm old. I'm conservative and I hate the way we copiy American English. Why? I noticed something else has crept into use which I do not think is imported from the US but is nonetheless just as annoying. What is wrong with the verbs "sitting" and "standing"? I keep hearing people on TV saying things like "I am sat" or " I am stood". I might understand if it was some sort of local colloquial grammar but it seems to be used by everyone, both north and south. Would anyone like to comment.
It bends but good grammar is good grammar and I am sat on that point. I think it derives from Northern England and has become fashionable for some reason. Since you are now in the UK, keep your ear open and you will soon hear people who are well educated saying SAT and STOOD instead of sitting and standing.
