The first-ever Republican national convention concludes with John C. Fremont chosen as the party’s presidential candidate-Fremont loses in November to Democratic candidate James Buchanan, but the Republicans win the presidency four years later with Abraham Lincoln
June 19, 1892
Francisca Rojas’ two young children are killed in their home in the small town of Necochea, Argentina-Rojas accuses a neighbor, but police officer Juan Vucetich discovers that Rojas herself is the killer through the world’s first use of fingerprint identification in a criminal case
June 19, 1944
In the largest aircraft carrier action of World War II, U.S. carrier-based fighters decimate the Japanese Fleet with only a minimum of losses in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, enabling U.S. Marine divisions to take the islands of Saipan, Guam, and Tinian in following weeks-the lopsided nature of the battle causes the event to be nicknamed the “Marianas Turkey Shoot”
June 19, 1953
During the Cold War, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, a married couple convicted of conspiring to pass U.S. atomic secrets to the Soviets, are executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing Prison in New York-they are the first U.S. citizens to be convicted and executed for espionage during peacetime and their case remains controversial to this day
