The Entertainer Lyrics as I understand it. (There are some parts i couldnt understand. I hope some of you are able to fill in the blanks where I couldnt.) Dressing room monologue; Somebody's little dog watching his master making up. As they go through the old routine, there's someone muttering sweet melody. Time to go now, a call for seats. With his straw hat and cane, he's in the wings * To the swing of the ragtime rage, the entertainer comes onto the stage With the help of the band, they're eating out of his hand The Entertainer: The best in the land. He sings a corny song, and when it all goes wrong, pretends the maestro played the music upside down. (insyncoptation?)** Then upon one knee he tells them all that he, believes there's no one like his dear old mom. "Why did I ever roam from my Kentucky home and leave behind that dear old lady i dont know." Another key to smash there on the feat of the parting to miss another winning show*** Back in the dressing room, flowers and french perfume, everyone sipping pink champagne. Now theyre going the cast and crew**** to celebrate the success of the show. All the pouring from neighbor scenes***** Lovely ladies from fashion magazines All the folk at The Grand hotel congratulate him on doing so well. From the coast to the coast, he is the one they love the most. The Entertainer: The Star of the toast Quarter after 4, (in his dingy room) he can hear "Encore". (coming from the gloom) Theres no one there he can drink with. No one to reminisce or think with From an old suitcase (takes a photograph) of a young girls face (in a checkered scarf). "My baby, your daddy loves you. It wont be long before I'm home." Lonely breakfast on the train with old Sam. Yet another town to win While he's at the town, he'll need to stop and worry when the shows a flop, but then its time to hurry get his every drop, from so called friends he's carried from the sinking ship. in the meantime, Sellout show tonight. The other stagers saying "Do I look alright?" Another band is playing. Offers a prayer that all it goes off Well for another great success Overture ended now, Maestro then takes a bow, taps with his baton on the stand. To the swing of the ragtime rage, the Entertainer comes onto the stage. In the spotlight he looks acase*** with a comic expression on his face With a wink and a little pause, he's bending low to accept the applause They all want him to know they love the star of the show. the entertainer is ready to go **** They all want him to know they love the star of the show. the entertainer is ready to go. **** I marked the areas that I dont think are right with *'s. Hopefully somebody else can hear this and use these lyrics as a guide to figure out what I couldnt hear. This is a lovely song and I would be elated if i could know exactly what its saying.
Does anyone know who the group are? After watching this performance I bought their album but it's long since disappeared. One of the other tracks on it was a similar, and equally excellent, version of Joplin's Maple Leaf Rag. I remember it began..."Louis Armstrong at seventy-one, he laid his horn down, his playing was done..."
