One thing that made me love Invader Zim is the fact that despite the goofy off the wall insanity and sheer stupidity of all of its universes inhabitants, it's clear the writers put a lot of thought into the actual backstory and setting that every so often they let leak through in small scenes like Zim recalling how he was "born". In aggregate, it all paints a clear picture of the Irkens as a post-singularity species. Whatever they were before they became what they are as we know them, they've been heavily modified to effectively be mass produced cybernetic biodrones for the express purpose of being tools of artificial intelligences. As a kid who was really into speculative sci-fi and hard sci-fi, that sort of stuff was my jam and let's me continue to enjoy the series on other levels to this day.
Apparently, before, they were beastlike and deadly, then a subset we all know and love would be born but vunerable to the more dumb and dangerous populace, so the most intelligent few that managed to survive went subterranian and evolved more irks to be more like the smarter but smaller populated subset, they'd be born from artificial wombs and installed subdermal implants to behave and have the same knowledge and experiences that the smarter subset of the species had before going underground to speed things up. The smeets would spend a decade underground doing lab learning and the best of the best would be chosen to go to the surface and separate the more animalistic ancestors from the quickly evolved irks. After obtaining total control they would turn to astrophysical endeavors and end up wanting to take total control of any planet they come across.
@@WeebTrashQuips Grim Adventures some what softens up after the pilot/first episode. Don't get me wrong its still some what a dark show sometimes but the art caters more to kids. While Misadventure of Flapjack is nightmare inducing like Invader Zim 🤣
The creator of Invader Zim, Jhonen Vazquez, original script, was much darker, but Nikelodeon told him to make it nicer. This is also how Nightmare Before Christmas was with Tim Burton, yes Nightmare Before Christmas was orihinally much darker.
@@takantiIt'd never happen, but I'd like to see a reboot on, say, Adult Swim, Max, or Netflix and it lean more into that darker side. Not much more though since I feel like the limitations led to subversive and creative dark themes and moments (ie. the Dark Harvest). But I'd love to see ones that learn more into that horror and morbidity that Dark Harvest brought
I was already in my very early 20s when this came out, but being an avid fan of all warped comics and animation, from Ren and Stimpy, very early South Park to Fritz the Cat etc (we didn't have as many options back then), I was instantly hooked on this incredible piece of art....it was hilarious but also darkly witty and a perfect reflection of the society to come.
If I remember correctly, on the DVD commentary, they said that Old Kid was inspired by a security guard for their building or something like that, so he's a parody of a real person
I watched Invader Zim when I was like 7 and I absolutely do not remember this show being this insane. But I do remember being completely obsessed with it.
After rewatching episodes of this show I think this show would totally work nowadays. You could make it darker and still appeal to different age groups because the satirical content the original had was ahead of it's time
Oh, you didn't include the episode that scared me for life, "Bestest Friends." That's the one where a boy wants to be Zim's BFF, so Zim removes his eyeballs and makes him think every squirrel is actually Zim. Freaked me out as a kid. XD great analysis, regardless.
Invader Zim, man. Talk about a pop culture phenomena and icon. Holy shit! And for GREAT reason too. It’s the perfect time capsule of early-2000’s animated shows. It was DARK as hell, morbidly hilarious, and so original. It absolutely still holds up today. It’s just as good now as an adult as it was when I was a kid. There’s never been anything like it before or since it aired. While there obviously were MANY great animated shows at that time, they pale in comparison to Invader Zim. It out shown everything. It’s a true testament to how even animated shoes CAN/SHOULD be smartly written and to trust that the kids watching it don’t need their hands held watching it, or every thing explained to them as if the character’s on screen are talking directly to the audience through the TV, rather than actually having a cohesive show full of cohesive episodes. Invader Zim is one of the all time greatest animated shows ever aired/created. It was almost immediately an instant classic for the 11-14 year old demographic. I loved(still do obviously) Invader Zim so much that when I found out the creator had actually wrote a comic called Johnny the Homicidal Maniac before ever creating Invader Zim; that had a 7 issue run I had to try and snag some. It’s similar in style to Invader Zim, but cranked to 12. Same type of humor but just VASTLY darker. If you have read it do yourself a favor and read it. It’s a one of kind comic run that if you’re into comics, you absolutely MUST read it.
From what I remember Vasquez said Nickelodeon was unhappy about his other projects (like JTHM) and told him it was one or the other. So he told Nickelodeon to suck it.
Invader Zim was peak American cartoon for adults/ teens or children. It was definitely ahead of its time, cult favorite. It's comedy is definitely my style and I still love love and Cherish this cartoon. It beats all American cartoons by a mile based on story and comedy and entertainment.
you skipped a whole bunch of episodes 😝 Career Day, Rise of the Zitboy, Invasion of the Idiot Dog Brain, A Room with a Moose, Door to Door, FBI Warning of Doom, Bolognius Maximus, Halloween Spectacular of Spooky Doom, Mysterious Mysterie, Future Dib, Megadoomer, Lice, Abducted, The Sad, Sad Tale of Chickenfoot, Mortos der Soulstealer, The Girl Who Cried Gnome, Vindicated!, The Voting of the Doomed and Gaz, Taster of Pork
Jhonen Vasquez is known for creating dark, messed up stories with a lot more violence. JTHM is a comic series about a psychotic serial killer, and we shouldn't forget Squee. Now that I'm a lot older most of it just feels super cringe, but Invader Zim remains awesome, one of the best cartoons ever made.
Some suggestions: 1. Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja 2. Camp lakebottom 3. Space goof 4. Beetleborgs 5. Rekkit rabbit 6. super robot monkey team This are my childhood memories, if you can please make video's on it😊😊
I never watched this show but I remember in middle and highschool (probably 2006-2012) seeing a bunch of kids wearing invader Zim shirts and hats and bags and stuff. I'm really surprised to find out it was on way back in the early 00s. I assumed it was still on when I saw people wearing all the merch but it must have already been long cancelled by then.
At 8:42 that hall pass is a bomb that is triggered by the student attempting to leave the school. If said kid is hauled off in an ambulance due to the emergency of lacking a stomach or liver, then that hall pass bomb will detonate, filling his heart and lungs with casing shrapnel. Even if it were a weak explosive, the fluid sacs around the heart could still risk getting ruptured which would be very bad since said sacs prevent the hearts movements from causing friction heat.
I watched this show when I was way too young and absolutely loved it still do, it definitely influenced my sense of humor along with courage the cowardly dog and Mr meaty. 😂
This is so weird.. I was a huge Zim fan growing up, like I not only remember every episode he has talked about plus some aspects he didn't talk about. However for the absolute life or me I have 0 memory of "Backseat Drivers from Beyond the Stars"... I have binge watched the show probably around 3-4 times as an adult also so I don't know why I have no memory of that specific episode... Its so odd..
There where a lot more episodes made, IDK why they where not shown here but I guess there is only so much time. Can't believe you did not show the halloween special though.
had to double check it but i remembered the iggins episode was supposed to end with iggins death but nick forced the scene of him bursting from the elavator lol
Now there's one thing fun fact About Invader Zim. You thought the story was over? Well, not exactly. In 2016, they announced at Comic Con that they're bringing back two Nicktoons. Ohh, regional. But they wanna make like, not like a reboot series, like 2 Nicktoons movies. First it was returned.called moguls model life and then i was very shocked they brought back the Invite your SIM. So in 2017, they gave us a little bit of hint that both movies were coming to Netflix, and I never expected that. Actually, scratch that, I think there were three Nick Toons returns. First it was Hey Arnold the Jungle Movie, which was epic collusion, which a little fun fact to you. And then they also brought back Rocco's my life so which took place after the finale was left off.And now the affair Sam brought back. But this was the last one, and it was called Enter the Flips. It was the last one, but it was the first feature film movie, so yeah, you're welcome.
that's forgetting "into the florpus" though, which is still official content thats far more recent (as well as the comics but hey i get it if we wanna keep to the animation) :p
I heard a rumor the creator of invader Zim said things at a company party that pissed off management so they fired the whole invader Zim team over night 👀
nothing will ever unsettled me like career day when Zim had all those pimples on his skin, turned all slimy and gross. It literally made my flesh crawl. Nothing was worse than that for me not even dark harvest😭😭😭
YO WHERE ON EARTH DID ZIM END UP BRO?! Like what alternate reality Stranger Things Hellscape did he land in?! I mean 💩!, E.T. quietly lands in the forest to collect some plant samples and half the damn U.S. Military comes after his ass! Zim essentially kills an entire student body ( yes i know he put all the organs back and the kids were fine, though they would be very much dead in real life) and no one bats an eye?!🤨🤨👀
