The Erlking

A father and son's travel through the woods is compromised by a demon.
A film I made almost 5 years ago. Criticism regarding the pacing inspired me to create an action sequel (See the trailer for Erlking 2). And yes, I know in the story the father and son were on horse back... Come on, I don't have a horse.

It's actually great production, but they are supposed to be riding a horse in the middle of the night and I think you spell it Erlkönig.

To those who complain about the lack of a horse: This video is an interpretation of Goethe and Schubert. It's a valid realization, and I like the honesty of the presentation. Highly imaginative! Nice work with limited resources.

Who rides, so late, through night and wind? It is the father with his child. He has the boy well in his arm He holds him safely, he keeps him warm.

I remember hearing this composition and actually having nightmares despite my limited knowledge of German. I was a music student in college and at one time, was asked to learn three Chopin compositions and the Erlking. Unfortunately I was given only three weeks to learn them which truthfully wasn’t enough time as I was a full time student and worked part time. I got as far as learning the first page of “The Erlking”…let’s say that put an end to my nightmares.

Very scary...I remember in college being asked to learn how to play "The Erlking"; however, technically, esp. in the right hand, it is not simple to play(on the piano). I had been asked to play that and a few Chopin compositions at a recital. I remember having nightmares hearing "Erlking" play in my head even though the lyrics were in German. Though I didn't get to play it at the concert--but did play Chopin--the practice did relieve me of my nightmares!

I am listening to this for my music appreciation class. It is Schubert's musical version of Goethe's poem about the legend of the Elf King. I have loved Goethe since examining his works in German class in highschool. Love the way Schubert made it sound to the music. This video is an interesting visual even though it doesn't quite follow the idea of the poem and music (should be on horseback).

It's too bad there is no horse, but you can' t expect the poor guy to randomly have a horse on hand to film with. I think this vid still brings the song to life in a really interesting way. Great job!

One of the most important aspects of this song is that the piano is supposed to represent their journey on horseback, not on foot. That's why the piano is "galloping," that's meant to symbolize the galloping of the horses.

Okay so this is an awesome video. I loved the way you did the lights. . . it was almost dreamy in the parts of the Erl King. Man this was a great project. I like how when the Erl King was attacking the boy you panned over then panned back and he was gone it really shows how the Erl King is in the boys head. Overall man this was an amazing project. In my opinion you did very well ! B-Man Productions

Okay, so let me explain the way I was taught about this in school: The father and son are riding horses in the woods. The boy turns around and sees ErlKing. The boy informs his father on what he saw. The father turns around and sees nothing. The father tells his son that it was just his imagination. And they keep riding. The boy turns around again and this time, the ErlKing is closer. The boy informs his father again. The father still sees nothing. A few minutes later, the boy screams "DAD!" And the father turns around and the son isn't on the horse...
@isaiahphillip4112
@isaiahphillip4112 8 лет назад
Nope, the poem ends with the boy dead in the fathers arms. Meaning the Erlkonig is probably just a symbol for death, and for all we know the father is racing his sick child to a doctor. The whole set of dialogue, to me, is the boy trying to tell his father he's not going to make it, but the father doesn't want to believe it.

Dude that's not even bad! Okay, it is not 100 % like what the poem describes, but for a low budget production, this is really not badly done and an interesting interpretation! I particularly like the camera work, best part where the erlking chokes the boy, no cut: that's great work!

I really thought this was neat. Lots of great pointers on it.Yes, there is no horse, but a horse is not easy to get ahold of or even film for that matter. Nice acting and real good casting. The kid was really good and you did a lot of cool changes/modernizations to it: the Elf King's face covered (you did think it was a demon), the daughter having a part, using the music as the only sound and not talking was awesome!!! And the color changing to contrast. Really great job!!!

@vinemp
@vinemp 14 лет назад
I agree: the alternative dimension to which you allude is quite poignant. You should definitely revisit this piece when you've collected the necessary dividends. But, perhaps the Elfking should be as colorful as his world. It's the contrast to the "real" people that make him unusual; therefore, he doesn't have to be [actually] shady. It should be his attractiveness to--specifically--a child that unsettles us. Remember also that the father takes note of the magic near the end...
@MusicalJuliet
@MusicalJuliet 13 лет назад
Wow, I think this is really brilliantly done! I can't believe you did this when you were sixteen, it's really great. The changes in the vibrancy and color in the video between the "real world" and the world of the Erlkonig are really fantastic and the composition and blocking of all the movements works really well. The kid is a really good little actor!

WoW ! It's awesome ! You made an exellent work ! The Erlking is really frightening... And I think that is better without the horse: The Erlking can approach and touch the child. He seems very bad with his long black mantle. I adore ! Very good job iamjoesxastdlife ! And when you change the colors, it make a very good effect. Very clearly for the Erlking (who tries to attract the boy) and dark for the real life (the child is dying). I really love this movie. Thank you =)

I love how you changed the color and the mood for when the Elven King tries to lure the boy. very neat trick. a horse would have been intense, but totally understandable.
